IC MT counts as "work exp" in real world...right? - out of work MT

Posted: Mar 15, 2011

Ok here is my situation....I have worked as an MT for 13 years, 11 of which has been on my own as an IC at home.  I have been out of work for a month or so and have been job hunting outside of my home for any kind of work including transcription.  I have been told that since I have spent 11 years working as an IC on my own that it does not count as work experience and that I have no work experience for the past 11 years.  ****  What do I do now?  How do you handle these comments?  I guess I will have to go back school for sure now!!!!

Love to know the thinking behind that statement - sm - ECMT

Why would having your own accounts not count as experience? I guess next time make up some name, if you don't have one for your own MTSO that is, and say you work for XYZ MT company for the last 11 years. Then give yourself your own reference saying how great and wonderful you are, LOL. The company or recruiter that told you that is not too tightly wound.

Just might do that lol - out of work MT

I think they assume that we sit around and surf the web, play with the kids, cook, clean, and then do an hour of typing and call that work. I don't know about you guys, but I have sit and typed many of those years 8+ hours a day for crappy pay AND the housework got put on the back burner!

I like the way you think, ECMT! ;D - MT Wordz - nm

13 years' exerience: Maybe it was age- - discrimination in "disguise"? nm

.

Very possible - out of work MT

Could have been my age. I will never know for sure.

Age discrimination? (sm) - Been there done that

[ In Reply To ..]
Why on earth would 13 years cause age discrimination? Are MTSOs hiring children now?

Look at the ads. Lots want "1-3 years" or - "3-5 years" of experience. s/m

There's a reason they aren't just saying "more than 1 year's experience", or "5+ years' experience".

The more experience an MT has, the more savvy they're going to be about what transcription is really worth.

My other guess is that if they can keep the overall age of their workforce at a certain level, they probably get a better deal on their healthcare insurance. That's not fair, but obviously some companies are doing that.

Those that don't offer benefits probably still worry, with the ever-increasing workload they keep putting on us, and the increasing hours we're spending planted on our rears doing MT, the greater the likelihood they'll be looking at work-related computer-injuries or illnesses. That's not right, either.

I'm sure they just figure they'll get the most bang for their buck by hiring young, and as inexperienced as they dare, USING THEM UP, and then throwing them away later.
Thanks for your answer (sm) - Been there done that

Never considered it in quite that light before. Kinda like Bic lighters, huh? Well, that's depressing.

More info please (sm) - Been there done that

What kind of employer told you that? Was it an MTSO or a hospital or ?? That is about the crazier thing I've heard in a long time.

OutOfWork, simple truth is, some ICs don't work very much, and - some don't play well with others.

You have to define yourself as someone with a professional attitude who would fit well into a hierarchical office setting. How about references from clients, noting your dependability, years of service, quality work, cooperativeness, humility (can you take orders?), problem-solving skills, etc.? If you could find some way of including an indicator of yearly income, that would speak loudly. People don't bring in real money in this field without real work.

That's not only insane, it's wrong - Reference based

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been an IC for 35 years and have never been told my experience was negated because I was my own boss. (IC = self-employed.) The only thing I can think of is your references. Do you have solid references to share with prospective employers?

For someone to tell you your experience doesn't count, sorry it makes me laugh because well, IT COUNTS.

Are Any Of You Afraid To Go Out Into The Real World Again?
Feb 04, 2012

After my company recently dropped my account by 1-1/2 cents, I have been considering either a job switch or maybe even an inhouse hospital position but the thought of it puts me in a panic.  Has anyone else experienced that?  I have been doing this job at home for 20 years and one of the reasons I love it is I don't have to deal with the politics of a work place or people in general.  I was a vet tech before an MT so obviously I love animals and prefer being with m ...

I'm just wondering how everyone is making that transition?  I have online courses that will come to an end eventually, and I will have to be in a classroom setting again.  I'm nervous about the interaction, as I have tried to go to school before and had bad anxiety.  I'm not sure if it is cause and effect, being an MT in my quiet hole for so long, or what.  I used to be able to work with the public so I think MT'ing has turned me into a social troll!  ...

I have been on QA for at least 2 months.  The first month my TL went on vacation and when she did, I was still on full QA and all reports monitored.  I have not received any QA good or bad during this time, but when I inquired about it yesterday, I was told of at least 9 things that I keep doing wrong, and I am not good enough to let out into the work pool.  I asked for reports that I messed up and they only came up with one report that was not messed up,but a report in which I left blanks, w ...

What gives with that ridiculous jargon in the training video?  "Real-time doctor's list."  Gimme a break.  "Streamlining our job."  Hooha.  "Increasing our productivity."  Come on now.  We're not idiots, Q. Are Names Mentioned On MT Test To Get A Job For Real?

I took a test the other day to apply for an MT job and the doctor loud and clear gave the patient's name. The dictation was a consult. After "failing" the test, I was then routed to another site which offered classes to "enhance" my training.  Is this a real company or a scam to get you take classes? ...
