Will the real sm please stand up? - hmmm

Posted: Sep 09, 2011

I'm getting confused.  I read a post by "sm," and she (?)  comes across as even-tempered in style and conservative in viewpoint.

I read another post by "sm," and she (?) comes across as angry and argumentative with a liberal viewpoint.

Either "sm" has a split personality or there are 2 people using the same name.  Can we clear this up so we know who we're actually speaking to?

"sm" is not the name that they're using. It's an ... - JustPassingThrough

abbreviation for "short message" or "see message" so that you will know that there is more inside the post and to click on it and open it up.

If "nm" is written it means that there's no message inside, so you don't have to waste time opening it.

Hope this helps.

I use sm sometimes - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Because I can't think of a cutesy name like the rest, because I get lazy and because we don't have assigned names here ;) And all it means to me is - see message when I use it.

See this thread - link inside

It helps if you put "nm" in the subject rather than in the reply - starzzz

nm ;)

"SM" means "see message" - --

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not an identity.

That sounds pretty "duhmmm", to me........ - nm (which means "no message")

[ In Reply To ..]

So you're not really following the format, then... - hmmm

because the reply screen prompts for a nickname.

work is slow everywhere because stuff like this is the highlight of the board...
I actually had a point here... - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
Some of these discussions have been rather heated.

If I'm going to reply to someone, I'd prefer that the poster I'm actually directing my comments to knew they were the one I was addressing. I've had people think I was "yelling" at them, when I was actually speaking to a different person who had used the "sm" designation in their header.

Whatever. You want to all use "sm," go for it - juvenile if you ask me. Thought this was a "professional" forum.

I'm a member of other forums where folks aren't afraid to put their screen name on their posts. That isn't the case here.
if there is a "professional" on this board, it has nothing to do with MT - none

I know you had a point... - just another poster/sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Are you the Hmmm from the faith board?

What I would do, if I were you, is this: Take a few words out of the subject line of the post you want to reply. Put these words in your subject line. Put Re: in front of your words on your subject line. This will mean that your post is directed toward whomever wrote the message you are Re-ing to. Then the person who wrote the message will understand you are talking to them and you'll avoid the whole argument.
See? Easy.

And yes, I will joke around with you because you like to follow "the prescribed format," which we all obviously do since you can't post without having a nickname/alias on your post. Just because I don't want to use the same one all the time doesn't mean I'm doing it wrong. =]
And yet I got castigated for "not following the rules" - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
and posting supposedly in the "wrong board."

It's no wonder MT as a profession is in such sad shape...
Well, yeah.. - just another poster
[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, but your post should really have been on the faith board to begin with.

That being said, the underlying issue was the point you were trying to make. You were castigated more for not following the rules because that was a softer target.

I hardly believe that whole mess of an issue over there reflects on MT as a profession though-- Frankly, it has every thing to do with being human--nothing do with with being an MT.
no,no,no, all she has to do is have the post she is replying - to open and THEN (see msg)
[ In Reply To ..]
click POST A REPLAY. that way it lines up the posts properly and keep people out of trouble, plus - it is what we all follow to keep it straight.

you start posting just anywhere, even with the RE: blah blah, it gets all messed up and too much trouble to follow.

Personally, I do not like RE: ****, or "to so-n-so" subject lines because I like gettingf a gist of the message inside to know if its worth opening. but thats me.
You know... - just another poster
[ In Reply To ..]
That would be the most logical way to do it, wouldn't it? Lol on me ;] I'm a couple neurons short today!
oh, sorry. wasn't meant to criticize. Want a laugh? - (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
What I meant about RE: in subject lines or just addressing people - a thread further down looks like so:

question
huh?
question
ep
well
well
then...
then...

Just remember
hmmmm

lol, imagine something like that on every thread, top to bottom on every board! Lordy, you'd never find anything.
That's a good point! - just another poster
[ In Reply To ..]
Heeheehee! I'd already blocked that fiasco out of my mind! We really don't need the board looking like that again.

No criticism taken, btw. I really didn't think it through all the way--glad you said something! =]
if you post properly we'd know who you were talking to. - by how they align.
[ In Reply To ..]
you need to perhaps have someone show you what to do here.

mho

They ARE following the format - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Nickname/Alias doesn't mean an actual name. It's whatever someone feels like putting in there. In this case sm for see message. Some put nm if there is no message. I've used both quite a few times myself because that is the nickname I choose to use.

It's not that people are afraid to put their names down, it's just that for whatever topic I am going to talk about I put whatever nickname to put. I don't go to the political board or tech help board and put "bad cook" there. I used 'bad cook' when I am posting regarding food items. Sometimes I'll sit and look at my message awhile and unsure what to use as a nickname. I've even used the nickname "hmmm" before too because sometimes things just make me go hmmm. LOL

I'm glad this site does not make us put the same nickname every time we write things. I like being anonymous because if someone does not like my political viewpoints I certainly don't need them bashing me on the gab or main board because of my nickname.

It's also not "juvenile" to use sm, because we want people to see our message.

Lastly, I do believe this is a professional forum. Just because you don't like more than one person using any specific nickname does not mean it's not a professional forum. And multiple people using the same "sm" moniker has nothing to do with the MT profession. I think the MT profession is a good field to be in and there are a lot of very professional MTs. If you think it's in "sad shape" that is your own personal opinion. Many of us do not feel that way.

Is This For Real?

I have been on QA for at least 2 months.  The first month my TL went on vacation and when she did, I was still on full QA and all reports monitored.  I have not received any QA good or bad during this time, but when I inquired about it yesterday, I was told of at least 9 things that I keep doing wrong, and I am not good enough to let out into the work pool.  I asked for reports that I messed up and they only came up with one report that was not messed up,but a report in which I left blanks, w ...

Stand Up

I know supervisors are overworked also in this field, but I wish supervisors would stand up for their workers.  Start communicating w/your MTs/Editors and Go to your higher ups and enlighten them on a few things - simply relay information to them but first you have to get it.  It would benefit us both greatly. DO Something. Stand Up For Yourselves And Others! LM
Jan 20, 2013

I know the job market for MTs is not like it used to be, but I am an ex hospital employee who lost her job to the big NuISance, too. If they continue to get good MTs for a pittance, they'll keep up their monopolystic tactics. In the time I worked for them, they ate up Transcend, WebMedEx, and Accentus (which was about the last company offering decent benefits, based in Canada). If they can't get good MTs, they'll have to mend their ways, but as long as their door keeps revolving, ...
