$8.65 an hour w/35 years experience - pullingmyhairout

that's what I averaged last week; a disgrace is what it is

This is terrible pay. I feel bad that you have to take the pay of people in other countries to keep your position. I wonder what will happen when there are almost no MTs in the US. We are being chased to Walmart to work.

PAY RATE - MT

In comparison, my young niece is paid $11 per hour to work at Target, with full-time benefits. I understand from her mother that the benefits are "pretty good" with regards to health insurance, PTO, etc. But, believe it or not, her mom is rather upset because she thinks that her daughter is underpaid. Other than being a lifeguard at the community pool for one summer, this is my niece's first job out of college.

So, to me, Walmart and Target are looking pretty good right now.

IMHO, MT work is great for extra money, if you get a good account and good management/QA, with little to no nitpicking, or maybe if you have your own personal clients. However, as a career, or a way to earn a living by working for a national MTSO, forget it. Of course, there may be exceptions, and there may be those who can earn great money working for a big MTSO, but I haven't found such a situation yet; have been looking for seven years.

She went to college to work for Target? - God help us all!!!!! nm

Between that upgrade on DocQScribe that has really slowed my system down along with the fact that they have changed almost all reports to SR, my paycheck was really sad this last time. Its about 90% SR right now, and I actually do better when there is some typing to do!

Sorry, Pulling. Definitely time to change jobs. - Wishing you a flood of work elsewhere. NM

$8.65 an hour - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
$8.65/hr sounds good right now. I too have been MT for 30+ years. Last night I started a brand new job, only 4 hours, made about $2.50/hr with 96% and 88% accuracy. Last dictator was horrible. Pretty bummed about it. It was in DQS which I haven't used in years and I have a 90 day "trial." At this rate I'll be looking soon and my one account is straight typing, but I guess there are a lot of rules and I missed a few even though I read the account specifics. I did get 96% on that one, but 2 critical errors, which I don't understand. One was my fault the other the dictator, but it still bums me out.

To OP, I feel your pain. I think MTSOs should consider this. - Anon too

They want all this experience in multiple specialties. They want you to know BOS. They want someone who is accurate and reliable. They want you to flex your schedule to their needs. Okay, then this MT with 35 years experience makes $8.65 an hour??? What gives? Where is the incentive to be all of these things? Because someone younger or more desperate is waiting in line for her job? How sad.

You know, I used to be able to make approximately $38,000 to $40,000 a year with 8 cpl. I was actually very happy with that. The dictator gave you the demographics if they wanted them printed on the paper, or not, it was up to them. They dictated the first name of a doctor they were writing to if they wanted it printed out, and gave you complete information for copies.

Now we have platforms that really test our dedication. I wish I could be paid for all of the time I spent researching demographics, including a Dr. Smith in New York, MR numbers, and comparing those with birth dates. I also wish I had the money for the copies I have produced over the years for free. Oh, and the Dear Dr. Anybody: is not even paid for!!!!

Why are we doing more and more for free? It did not used to be that way. There is a platform (ChartNet) that kicks out reports to be transcribed that are not considered 80% or more accurate. And who decides n that 80% - the platform of course.

The MTSOs have made the doctors become lazy and have promised them the world for their business. There are too many big MTSOs who are not supportive of their MTs and what they go through to turn out a report. I say you can't have it both ways. Pay for the perfection you demand with a steady supply of work. If an MT with 35 years experience is only making $8.65 an hour, or even $11 an hour, there is something seriously wrong with where this industry is going. So sad.

DISCLAIMER: This posting is not generated to debate or create criticism with all posters who may have different opinions. It is meant only as support to a very deserving MT.

I feel you there... - SassyPants

My MTSO requires 12,000 lines per pay period every 2 weeks. I would have to work 40 hours exactly on the nose w/o going into OT to even come close IF I had consistent work everyday.

12,000 x 4.5 CPL = $540 / 80 per week = $6.75 hour

BEFORE taxes and insurance are taken out!

WHAT A JOKE!!!

To All The MTs Out There With 20 Plus Years' Experience
Jan 11, 2010

Could you please tell me HOW you did it?  Nevermind the decreasing pay or anything like that.  I'm talking how did you do it PHYSICALLY?  I'm 10 years in, love the nature of the work, etc.  However, I feel beat up from head to toe after only 10 years and while I'd love to stick it out another 10 or 20, assuming it's still a viable option, I just don't know if I could do it.  I'm healthy, pretty fit, but my entire lower legs are constantly ac ...

15+ Years Experience And Can Not Get Employment
Mar 23, 2010

I worked for Viera Diagnostic in Viera, Florida for the past 3 years. I broke my leg recently and they said they didn't need me anymore, as I need physical therapy three times a week to insure mobility in the future. I have over 15 years experience and cannot find a job. Anyone have any ideas. I did one test for one company, they said I did not pass. I am wondering if I should throw in the towel. I love this work and feel that I am a very good transcriptionist. Any ideas are welcome. ...

My Experience Is 3 Years Old, How Do I Get Back In?
Jan 13, 2011

I worked in transcription for 20+ years. My last job was for 16 years, acute care and lots of specialty experience, ESL, radiology. But, I have not worked for 3 years. I can't seem to get a bite. I want to be a full time employee. I have an explanation for my hiatus on my resume. Also, does it detract because I have a Bachelor's degree listed on my resume? THANKS GUYS ...

Looking For Work, Over 7 Years Experience
Sep 02, 2014

I have had less volume at work recently at the place I have been working for over the past 4 years.  Im ready to move on but I want to find the right place for me.  Ive done some hospital and acute care work in the past and didn't care for it.  For the last 4 years Ive done clinic work, mostly ortho, and would like to find a place that will put me on clinic accounts only.  I need steady work and at least .08 a line.  Does anyone have any suggestions of companies the ...

Offered 8 Cpl At SoftScript For 20 Years Experience.
Jan 05, 2011

Has anyone said that was not enough and have them counter offer with more?  I don't plan on working for SS (I saw way too many complaints on the other board about them), but what about future offers which I suspect will not be any higher?  I saw on the resume board what I consider way too many willing to work for 7 cpl with plenty of experience.  Is it likely they will pay more when others are willing to work for so much less?  And many of these 7 cpl were IC.  Al ...

How Long Should An MT With 10+ Years Experience Expect To Be On

May 28, 2012

I find it frustrating that some MTs are completely unhappy with this company and yet you find threads of MTs who are happy. ?? How can it be both ways.    I would like to hear from someone who is HAPPY with transcription doctors.  Not smart off comments from people who are just feeding off the threads of others.  Just because a hiring process is easy, does not mean it is a bad company.  As far as the 6 weeks to get the first check...that is in the initial paperwork we received, so that&# ...

6 Years Experience, But No Formal Training -HELP
Dec 07, 2012

Hi all, I have been doing MT on a contingent basis for the last 6 years for my mom (who used to run her own I/C company). For the past 3 years I've been a CNA and this past August had to choose between knee surgery to continue being a CNA or to find another line of work, I have 2 little girls, so I chose the later.  The problem I'm running into is it seems to be a requirement to have a degree or cert in MT/ME to find ANY thing in this field! Does anyone know of a company that doe ...

I REFUSE TO ACCEPT 7 TO 8 CPL WITH 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE-IT IS AN INSULT TO ME
Aug 11, 2010

I have been testing all week. Some companies will not even discuss pay until you take their tests. Then, I waste my time taking these tests only to be offered 7 and 8 cpl. It is absolutely offensive to me to offer me that low pay. You want all of my years of experience, but only want to pay "newbie" rates. I am completely and wholeheartedly giving up on this profession. ...

I Have Not Worked In 6 Years, And Only Have 3 Months Experience, Is There Hope In Finding A Medical
Jul 05, 2012

I graduated from a local Technical College with a Certificate in Medical Transcription. I had spent a year searching for a company that would hire someone new, but had no luck. Then, out of the blue a local company had seen my resume and offered me a job. I got the job, but the thing was I was almost 7 months pregnant with my second child! I had only worked a couple months until our baby was born and after consideration, decided not to come back so I could be with our baby full-time. Well, it ha ...

Is InScribe LLC, Kentucky Changing; Anyone Recently Apply Or Been Hired Who Has Years Of Experience;
May 11, 2011

Okay, I know InScribe LLC (Kentucky) has been on the Boards multiple times (at least monthly, if not weekly, it seems), but I just noticed they have a “Premium” ad at the top of the Job Seeker’s Board.  I guess these “Featured Listings” are not free, as the other listings are.  If I remember correctly, most of the posts on the Boards have been by Newbies, because InScribe evidently is one of the few MTSOs that hire new graduates.  However, it appear ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Just Wondering What You Make Per Hour, Based On A 40-hour Week...sm

I know none of us get paid by the hour, but I was just wondering if any of you have ever figured out just how much you earn per hour, based on a 40-hour week. I'm just trying to figure out where I fit in. I seem to be earning $16-18/hour give or take based on how my week goes.  ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.
Aug 08, 2014

Lately, I've been getting legal notices mailed to my home from I believe the east coast somewhere informing me of a class action lawsuit against M*Modal and inviting me to joint if I have a claim.  I don't think I have a claim, but then again with all the shady practices in this business, I'm not so sure.  I'm just curious what the heck is going on. Anyone care to give me the lowdown? ...

Average Per Hour With 0.75 Or 0.375 Versus $12.00 Per Hour
Mar 31, 2014

My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour.  I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl.  The $12.00 is employee status for a small local company I worked for over 9 years.  The other is an IC position.  Do you think I would make more with the $12.00 an hour or the per line production rate?  I have never done production by line work so I'm not sur ...

I Am Now Getting My 9th CCM In 7.5 Years. I Have Had
Dec 04, 2009

horrible ESL accounts, horrible teaching facilities with residents who don't know how to dictate.  By the time you get used to them, they're gone.  I have been insulted by taking an enormous pay cut for the over rated, under performing ASR.  Through all of this, I have mostly been happy with my job.  Now, however, I will finally say that I hate MQ.  I hope they lose all their accounts to nice mom and pop people.  I hope they go bankrupt and have to move in ...

18 Years
Dec 12, 2011

So, got my congratulatory e-mail from medquist today for working here for 18 years as of this month  How ironic . . . I got that e-mail on the same day that I got the call from the Department of Welfare telling me that due to my low income (despite working full time) my kids are eligible for medical benefits from welfare!  I even replied to my "congratulatory" MQ e-mail stating so!  I know some of you will retort with "why stay?" but I have a disabled husband to take care of, ...
