Nuance and pay cuts - Pollyanna
Posted: Jan 05, 2013
Nuance has gobbled up my company and I now have a $400 a month pay cut with their line rates - we all do! Can anyone recommend a stable company to try?

Unfortunately that is just the tip of the iceberg. QA will start slamming you pretty soon, I think they will make sure you don't get any bonuses. Sad but true. I don't know if there are any better out there. They seem to all be following the other and all think they can do anything they want and treat employees any way they want. Only way to stop it is lawsuits and labor board reports. If they get away with it they will continue to do it.
If there is a better one please let us know. I would love to hear there is something out there, somewhere....

No - the grass isnt any greener on the other side. My co. was bought by transcend, then sold/merged with Nuance. I have applied and was offered less cpl with other companies. Plus - why do a lot of these companies like TTS, Brietner, etc. CONSTANTLY advertise? Turnovers? Makes you wonder.

I just gave my notice today. But I had made up my mind that it makes no sense to jump from one MTSO to another, so I was going to hold out for a hospital job, and found one. They let their MTs work at home BTW. I feel so fortunate, and wish the rest of you the same good luck. This job was only advertised internally however, so I would suggest going to hospital's individual websites and checking their career page. It's a dirty shame what has happened to the industry, and again, wish you all well.

The bonuses are what keep most people afloat as the pay is pretty shabby. That just does not seem right. How could they do that and feel justified? Perhaps, they just favor some and not others and may have nothing to do with their rules. Just sayin.....

I got a $1000 a month pay cut when Nuance bought my company. I had to file bankruptcy and lost my house thanks to them. I recommend finding the elusive in-house job or trying to find a small MTSO. These big ones are only out to destroy all of us.
I also lost my house. sm - mt2

My husband became disabled 2 years ago. I lost my job 1 year ago and was hired by Nuance. Now I'm making half of my previous salary. We filed BK and will be losing our house. As soon as we move, I will be job hunting. This industry totally sucks.
because of them - say what
[ In Reply To ..]
Why is it Nuance's fault you lost your house? Why is it not the owner of the service that sold out to Nuance? (Actually, it's neither's fault IMO.) If you're going to blame someone, you can't blame Nuance. Your former MTSO didn't lose his/her house, believe me.
My former MTSO also didn't cut my pay. Nuance did. - By 25% or $1000 a month.
[ In Reply To ..]
I'd say it makes it their fault. It's not like they took $50 or $100 a month away from me. They cut me by $1000 A MONTH. Effective immediately with no warning when they bought my company. Quit trying to make excuses for them.
not making excuses - no horse in this race
[ In Reply To ..]
I just don't understand how it's their fault if your employer sold you down the river. She's sitting pretty and she KNEW you'd be making less and did it to you anyway.
Nuance isn't paying you $1000 less than other MTs. They are likely paying you the same as the rest of the MTs.
Ergo, sorry, not their fault. But if it makes you happy to blame them, it's all good.
No horse in this race - Then why bother
[ In Reply To ..]
to comment at all? Your opinion hardly matters since you have nor horse in the race, but you want to be right about who you think she should blame? I heard facts; you heard blame and got defensive. Paying all the MTs the same miserable rate makes it all okay? I hope this response is all the attention you need today. You need help.
There's no rule that says when Nuance buys a company they have to cut pay. - They just do it anyway.
[ In Reply To ..]
If they're buying a profitable company that was doing just fine paying it's employees a higher salary, and they buy that company just for the sake of dominating the industry and buying up everything, and they come in and cut pay anyhow, how is that the former MTSO's fault? That's Nuance's greed. If the previous MTSO was profitable, there's no need for Nuance to cut salaries for the MTs from the company they bought. But they do anyhow. Because they are greedy. Yes, I'd say that puts a lot of blame and fault on Nuance.
This is true. I went through the merger when Transcend bought TRS and didn't get a cut. - new Nuance slave
[ In Reply To ..]
This statement is very, very true. When Transcend bought TRS, we were promised no pay cuts, and they kept their word. I stuck with Transcend for the 3-ish years since that merger and not once did they attempt to cut my pay. Nuance, on the other hand, did not hesitate to give us Merry Christmas pay cut. So, yes, I absolutely agree that it is mostly Nuance's fault for causing financial hardship for so many that were not in that position before their respective mergers. If I didn't instantly go out and get a second job as soon as they announced the cuts, I'd be in the same situation. And not everyone can just go out and get a second job. Not everyone has the health to do so or the time with raising a family. I'm just lucky that I'm healthy and have no kids so I can do so.
Be careful falling into the 2nd job trap though... - MsMagoo

I started working a 2nd job in 1996 and worked from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. 5 days a week, and usually worked at least one shift on my days off to make up for slow times during the week. I did this until 2009, when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I had gained 75 pounds from all that sitting and typing! It's too tempting to keep your nose to the grindstone and takes a lot of self-discipline to get exercise (which apparently I don't have). I'm not saying all that inactivity gave me cancer, but the extra weight could be a contributor, as well as other bad health effects, like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. I'm just saying if anyone decides to go the 2nd job route, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Don't be a slave to your job. BTW, I did try to keep working to keep my health insurance, but finally couldn't keep up my line rates any longer and ended up losing my health insurance and eventually had to stop working. Make your health more important than your job. Good luck to you all :)
Thank you - grateful

I have been praying all day for an answer about taking on Nuance as a part time job. I am employed full time on an hourly basis at a job I love. I was only going to do this as a little extra money. I got on to with the prayer I would hear from someone who could answer the gnawing question of whether working 2 jobs is worth the price you have to pay. God bless you... because of me you just did
Thank you! - MsMagoo

you made me smile! before you know it that "extra" money becomes a part of your budget you can't do without. I'm so glad I wrote the reply. Take care and God bless you too :)
So you're saying if someone has been living off a certain income - for a long period of time...
[ In Reply To ..]
... and then suddenly Nuance comes in and cuts that pay by a VERY significant amount, then it must be that person's fault because other MTs are living just fine on less? You're a messed up human being.
Yes, if you've never made more money than that you can live on what they pay, because that's always been your budget and what you've always worked with, but when you've been making a certain income for a long time and have expenses commiserate with the income you are accustomed to (or heck, just live in an expensive part of the nation), and then Nuance comes along and very suddenly and without warning cuts a significant portion of that pay, it makes you instantly not able to pay your bills.
WHO CARES what everyone else is making? The point is that they cut the pay of someone who was already making more by A LOT, not chump change that they can do without. Yes, that absolutely makes Nuance responsible for suddenly not being able to pay a mortgage or a car payment or whatever it may be. Their greed is what caused the drop in income. I'm one of those people who firmly believes that they should not pay all the same level anyhow and should reward longevity and good/hard work with higher pay than new graduates, new hires, etc., so to me your argument about how it's not Nuance's fault they cut pay because they pay everyone the same is just completely doubly stupid. If someone knew that upon hire and agreed to that, then fine. But in a merger when you did not agree to take a certain pay rate, not okay, just greed.
Are you just one of those psychos who was making the crappy new "industry norm" and now get some kind of sick pleasure out of watching people who have been making more than you suddenly brought down to your level? That's certainly how you sound.
I agree. We should be paid according to our experience, quality. sm - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I also think we should be paid according to where we live. Seriously. When I worked outside this industry, my employer had employees in 50 states. Those in high cost states like mine were on a higher pay scale as long as they were doing a good job. We had regular reviews. But that was back in the day when workers were scarce. Employers had to entice people to come on board.
not AT ALL what I said - no horse
[ In Reply To ..]
I want to know why her nose isn't out of joint at the service that SOLD HER OUT. Nuance didn't do that. The person who owned the service Nuance bought sold out the MT. That MTSO was paid a very PRETTY penny and knew darn well that her workers would be screwed over.
Nuance is under no obligation to pay you what you were paid prior to coming on board. That's just stupid. So, no I'm not blaming the poster, just asking why Nuance gets the blame and not her other service.
Then there always is that, no one has a gun at your head, move on.
You said, "Actually, it's neither's fault IMO." - oh really
[ In Reply To ..]
If you say it's not Nuance's fault and it's not the MTSO's fault, then whose is it? It's pretty clear you meant it's the MTs own fault for losing their house, especially with the rest of your context. You clearly said it's not the MTSO or Nuance? If you also say it's not the poster's fault, then whose fault are you saying it is? With the quote from your post, "Actually, it's neither's fault IMO," it sounds clear as day that you're blaming the poster for her own financial woes.
In MY opinion it was caused by both. Yes, the MTSO sold out. BUT, still there is no rule that Nuance is under any obligation to CUT pay when they buy a company either. The MT's are under contract with the first service for a certain pay rate. Common sense would dictate that if Nuance buys the company they buy that contract. So, to me it is clearly Nuance's fault for breaking the contract with the MT. They did not agree to work for Nuance's pay rate. Again, 100% Nuance's greed.
perhaps - no horse

They need to disclose why they DON'T need the $1000 a month that got cut, why they DON'T need benefits that cost more than half their pay, how they think it's okay we are getting our wages stolen for no good reason other than just because they can.
Honestly, maybe feeling sorry for yourself is a waste of time, but you know what else is a waste of time? Knocking people for sharing their dire circumstances without either support or hope.
Oh, and if you don't like all the "negativity" please share your situation and if your dear husband brings home the bacon and provides the benefits, please disclose this so we can tell you your vote don't count in this race.
For starters how about paying 4 cpl for editing. - mt2
[ In Reply To ..]
That's HALF of what I used to make. I easily made $40,000 + 2 years ago. I didn't say it was Nuance's fault, it's my fault for taking such a crappy job. And trust me, I am job hunting and will find a better position. Thanks a lot.

WMX employees are notified we will find out pay adjustments to be made as we blend in with Nuance sometime in November. Sucks... Just at holiday time.

So, since we have gone to nearly all ASR, and have taken a pay cut of 40% basically, I think it's time that burden be shared by all employees equally. I think it's time we hear that ALL employees have received a decrease in pay over what they made say 5 years ago. I will even be fair, since we have the CHANCE to make it up in production supposedly, and say just cut salaried employees pay by 25% instead of 40%, just so we can all be in this together.

Wondering if anyone has thoughts on this subject. My state does allow filing for UNDERemployment due to wage cuts. However, in the past when my employer was bought out and wages were cut, I did not realize this was an option. I doubt they would lay you off. Thanks ...
