Healthcare Documentation Specialist Pay - DDTM

Posted: Sep 17, 2014

Hello, I am currently a HDS student and have a few questions about what happens after post graduation.

What is the lowest, medium, and highest pay that an HDS gets a week, month and year for Nuance?

Curious - sm

Have you checked pay rate for other companies, or do you only want to work for Nuance?

The school that I am enrolled in is partnered with Nuance. So after I graduate I will be going there. That is why I am asking about Nuance as of right now.

Unfortunately, - you have entered a field

where no one can tell what you might make in an hour, a week or a month. Too many variables, including whether or not you even have work to do at any given time. One thing you can pretty much count on though... you will likely be making very little to start. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Pay is by line, so depends on your speed SM - Anonymous

I think their highest is 0.425 cpl for editing and 0.825 for straight, plus an incentive for nights (after 5 EST). That's usually for experienced acute care people, though. Don't know what they pay new grads. They supplement to bring it up to minimum wage by some tricky formula, but basically the lowest would be minimum wage in your state and the highest might be about $10-12 hr., depending on your speed and the quality of the dictators. (The more likely would be minimum wage, sorry.) Plus, there will be periods of no work, which is unpaid.

Ok, now knowing that. How fast do you get raises or get a higher pay? Just an honest question here... how do they expect us to live with pay like that?

Never heard of anyone getting an actual raise, ever. SM - Anonymous

Sorry, can't give you encouraging news. In theory your pay would increase as you get more proficient, since you'll make more lines, but it wouldn't be fast. You might eventually go from ambulatory care (clinic) to acute care and get a higher rate that way, not sure if anyone actually does or not. It doesn't seem that they care if you can live on the pay or not. They send a lot of work to India, where they pay much less. Seems like they'd be happy to send it all there if they could.

Companies don't usually give raises and there are no - sm

cost of living increases either. If you get to your top speed that is what you will always make with no increases...sorry.
pay decreases for me over 20 years experience - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I quit recently and found another profession. My pay decreased by about 30% over the past 20 years. I had been an RN for 10 years also, then switched to this to stay home with children, and my experience was too old to get back to nursing. Nuance bought out my companies 3 times and I gave up and trained for another profession. Good luck to you though, maybe your experience will be different.
What did you train for? - AnotherAnon

Trained for coding; happily employed now :) - anon

Now I realize many are afraid that coding will turn out the same way, and honestly I don't have a crystal ball but I am older and do believe it will continue with a good outlook for at least as long as I need before I retire. I have an office job close to home, they appreciate us and we get automatic raises yearly, I got one after my first 90 days, all holidays off with pay, and we are treated well!! What a change, I feel like I woke up from a nightmare! We also get bonuses if we meet goals as an office (which they have for the past 3 years except 1 quarter after implementing EMR), and they bring us treats while we are working (root beer floats, cookies, lemonade!) There is life outside of MT ladies, and they actually show appreciation when you work hard :) Good luck.

Raises? What are those? - Ayn

[ In Reply To ..]
Not a Nuance employee here, but I think I can safely say that most MT/ME/HDS - whatever you want to call us - have not seen a raise in years, if ever. Most have seen pay rate cuts, not increases.

The only way to increase your pay/income is to produce more, and we are being pretty well hogtied as far as being unable to do even that.
Raises...not with M*Modal! - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
That's a good one....the only raise I've gotten I've had to beg, borrow, and steal for...and am told every time that merit raises are only given yearly, but seem to be ONLY when I've asked, never given willingly....and I get consistently good audits! When I have gotten a raise, it has been so miniscule, it is almost laughable!

There are NO raises, only pay cuts nm - acuteMLS

The only way to get higher pay - AnotherAnon

[ In Reply To ..]
Is to produce more, which becomes increasingly more difficult due to speech recognition being so bad and no signs of getting any better, payrates are consistently being reduced, having multiple accounts to work on on a daily basis, lack of work, so on and so forth.

I've been doing this for 10+ years and making less every single year, just about ready to jump ship.

Not their problem how you live on pay like that--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
They offer the pay, you earn it and distribute it according to however you see fit. If you cannot live off of it and up and quit, there are plenty of others out there who will be lured into the schools where they will pay to learn how to do a job that will not pay them well.

Such behavior is of course not limited to Nuance but it does not make it easier to handle when you are on the receiving end.

Oops, correction to pay is by line, left off a zero - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
That's 0.0825 and 0.0413 or about 8 and 4 cents per line, not 82 and 41.

Minimum pay - No work

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been doing this for 16 years. Nuance bought my company after 2 prior buyouts. My pay was cut 50% when they brought in speech work. It was also cut for straight typing. I am still producing the same final product for the client and I am paid 50% less, but Nuance charges the same to the clients, so guess who got a 50% raise?

In addition, they added Fiesa which is totally demeaning and described as a "learning tool."

You will not get any raises. You can only increase your pay if you work faster, send less than 10% of jobs to QA review (I have a heavy ESL so my % is always more than 10), and you score over 99%, but 99.5% to get the quarterly bonus. There is a minimum line count you must achieve as well to even qualify for the bonus.

I am not being negative here, I am telling you the truth. I don't know that it is better anywhere else.

I babysit while I am working--have my laptop on my couch. I am only working PT now. I make a lot more money babysitting.

Minimum pay - No work

I forgot to add--I run out of work constantly and I work on 3 accounts.

HDS Pay - fivefingers

[ In Reply To ..]
Every comment above is unfortunately so true! Never any raises. My pay has been cut over 50% since 2006. I once asked my manager for a raise and she told me to "WORK HARDER." I would suggest that if your school offers other classes such as coding, medical assisting, phlebotomy or even CNA, to take them. Medical transcription is a dying field. Good luck to you.

You really should be getting answers from your school - Valley Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you feel you are not getting straight answers? Didn't someone say this HDS program was tied in with Nuance? Is Nuance not answering any questions?

Minimum Wage, Period - no more

no less.

Is It Just Me, Or Do The Words Clinical Documentation Specialist Mean

Ahima certainly gives it a different spin than MT, and an article at Study.com lists desired or common requirements as associate's or bachelor's degree, with nursing, HIM, or health information technology, and medical coding expertise.  So where does Nuance get off expecting "lowly" MTs to do this stuff, with 100% flawless accuracy, on lowly MT pay having to Google everything? I mean, they do not even pay us enough to be "lowly" MTs, and yet expect us to Google and verify that do ...

I work in a surgery center/clinic in medical transcription. I have never worked in the medical field before, so I'm not sure what is acceptable.
