companies that hire newbies - workin

Posted: Dec 03, 2009

I have a friend who is looking for an MT job. She is just about done with school. Can anyone help me out with companies who hire newbies? I know there was a list on here at one time, long ago, but I cannot seem to find it. I think it was actually on the "old" board.

Thanks!

Where did she go to school? Do they not offer any assistance?

Local hospitals - Also check there.

Some hospitals are willing to hire newbies and there are quite a bit of hospitals these days who have their MTs at home. The training is usually on site for a couple of months but when you consider the trade off of being an actual employee with benefits, it's really not that bad.

Just like the rest of us newbies she is going to have a lot of searching to do. The school I went to showed us all sorts of sites to go to to search for job openings. I was fortunate enough to work right out of school, but because a lot of hospitals are starting to do in-house transcription 25 people were laid off from my company, including me. Now, again, I am going to site after site looking for work. I have visited over 75 companies sites in the past month and have only been able to submit a resume to about 20. I understand how important experience is to a company looking for employees but it makes it that much harder for new MTs to get started. She just has to be very dedicated to looking for work and be extremely accurate on any employment tests that she gets. Best of luck to her, and all of us other newbies that are starting to regret choosing this as a career choice.

If she went to Andrews or M-Tec, she shouldn't have too much trouble. I went to Andrews and had a job with a large national MTSO within 6 weeks from graduating. Of course, having a good school to put on your resume only opens the doors. Once you get through the door, you have to have the skills to do very well on the employment tests.

"All of us other newbies" are not regreting choosing the career. There actually are some of us that are employed and happy with it. I do know the majority are not, but there are plenty of us who are happy with our choice and did not have significant trouble finding a job.

If a new graduate can devote a lot of time to applications, that furthers the odds for success. I put out about 70 applications within 3 weeks of graduation and before I was hired put out about 155. I treated it like a part-time job. If they said they didn't accept new graduate applicants, I applied anyway. I followed up every application with a brief e-mail. If you have very good skills for a new graduate, if you can just get someone to let you test then you have a chance. You have to be aggresive, without crossing the line and being annoying.

From my own experience, the best advice I can give is to not let other people discourage you. I got a great job right after graduation and there is no reason others should believe they won't be as fortunate. Maybe they won't, but negativity does not accomplish much.

What school did she go to? Doesn't that school have a placement process for their grads? And--and this is not to be cruel, but only realistic--why should I or any MTSO hire a newbie when I am overwhelmed with resumes from MTs with 10-30 years of good, solid experience? Again, not trying to be cruel, just stating the reality of the economy. In any case, I wish your friend good luck.

well you can try big companies like www.medquist.com,www.infraware.com,www.precysesolutions.com etc.

Smaller companies expect experienced hands.

Why Don't The Big Companies Want To Hire
May 31, 2010

part-timers for weekend work anymore?  That's the way it was done for years, full-timers for M-F and part-timers for weekends, and it worked great because so many MTs are looking for extra weekend part-time work anyway.  It seems to be mostly the bigger corporations, as usual, changing things for the worse here.  Is it just the laziness of the HR & management people, not wanting to process part-timers?  I suspect a lot of the very-experienced MTs are working at small ...

Any Companies Hire M-F?
May 15, 2014

I know this is an extreme long-shot, but I'm wondering if there are any good MT companies out there that hire M-F and pay a fair line rate (for the way things are today anyway). It doesn't matter to me whether I work employee or IC. I just left Nuance a couple months ago and am working general transcription on my own schedule right now, but it's way too strenuous for the pay rate and the work is sporadic. I've got to figure out my next move, but I hate to go back to working e ...

Will Companies Hire A New MT From Careerstep
Apr 08, 2010

I am taking the Careerstep course and I am going to finish very soon.  I hear that many companies wave their experience requirement if you take the Careerstep course, because it is so thorough and you transcribe so many reports that you can easily find a job.  Is this true?  Anyone out there graduate from Careerstep and find a job easily as a new MT.  I mean how do you get the jobs if you do not have the experience.  ...

Are There Any Companies Still Out There That Hire For Straight Typing?
Apr 21, 2014

I've given VR a fair shot for close to a year now, but I still type much faster than I edit, so I've lost quite a bit of money since my account went to VR last year.  I know that VR is almost everywhere these days, but does anyone know of any decent companies that still have straight typing and are actually hiring right now?  I'm looking for acute care and I really don't care if it's IC or employee status at this point.  I just want to do regular transcrip ...

Isn't It Interesting That Newbies Are Getting
Jul 01, 2010

us oldies are getting below 98%, in some cases waaayy below, after years or decades of exemplary work, with raises, etc. How much more obvious can it get that they're downsizing the highest paid (and most experienced) MT/ME, to hire the newbies and get the tax breaks. Makes me SICK, so I resigned a couple weeks ago and feel absolutely in shock that I did it, finally, and trust in God for a better job. ...

Investing In Newbies
Aug 16, 2010

(Creaky voice) Baaaack when I was starting out... I had neither experience nor education, except my own attempts at self-training by reading "Taber's Medical Encyclopedia," and typing practice from "Norton's Anthology of Poetry." After 3 weeks of mailing resumes to local offices, I had decided to give up on finding an MT job. It looked like no experience, no hire. Then I took part in a transcription "casting call" at a large FP clinic. I tested horribly for speed (12 wpm), got stuck fo ...

For The Newbies Who Come Here And Get Scared
Nov 10, 2010

I want the newbies who come here and read the complaints and get scared about "what have I gotten myself into" to realize that not everyone is unhappy at MedQuist.  Keep in mind that they have literally thousands of employees and only a handful come here to vent their unhappiness (which is fine, I understand, not everyone is going to be in an ideal situation).  I think it very much depends on your circumstances as to how life will be at MQ.  I was a new grad hire and once I ...

Newbies Asking The Question
Jan 18, 2011

I see it here often and I just read it again, misplaced on the Job Seeker's forum: "I just graduated from an MT school and everything requires experience.  How do I get experience?" This is a question that needs to be addressed with the schools you are choosing.  And it should be asked BEFORE you start the course.  There are courses that are less expensive but they lack various key components-- like instructors, placement assistance, etc.  (That's not addressing t ...
