I have an interview with MQ Monday... - passing through
Posted: Dec 19, 2009
Is anyone happy at MQ? I have been an IC for the past two years and have to have benefits including insurance. Any suggestions or ???? Thanks

If you spend some time on this board you'll see that many people are happy at MQ. This is just a place to vent. Those who are really miserable at MQ eventually look elsewhere, the rest of us complain but I think are reasonably satisfied. I know I complain sometimes but in general I'm pretty happy at MQ.

WHAT?? Read the board more closely - more than 90% are not happy at MQ. They are looking for other jobs and as soon as they find them - they are gone.
Why do you think MQ is still HIRING when there are no jobs available! DUH...

If you look at the number of hits the Medquist posts get there are about 20 to 100 per post. You will also notice that many of the posts are by the same people. At best, there are maybe 100 people who post regularly on the Medquist forum. Medquist has about 3000 US MTs. So we're talking about 3% of the total MTs working for MQ. I have no idea what those other 97% MTs think nor does anyone else who posts on this board.
In short, make up your own mind. I'm as happy at MQ as I will ever be doing transcription. Sure, there are some frustrating and stupid things that go on, but those occur in a lot of companies. Fortunately, working at MQ has allowed me to go back to college full time so I can eventually do something I want to do. Before MQ, I worked as an IC for one of these supposedly wonderful small MTSO where I was working 80 hours a week, paying half my income in taxes, had to fight daily with the owners because they wanted me to work even more, and was going under.
Now, I make about $50,000 a year as an employee with pretty good benefits working at MQ on one of their most hideously awful hospital groups in the midwest where it is about 90% ESL and about 90% VR. If you know your stuff and are not a slow reader you'll do fine.

I also have an interview on Monday with MQ. I'm confused about their compensation which reads, "65 cpl including expansions." Does that mean no spaces because otherwise most companies just state "65 cpl including spaces???"
[ In Reply To ..]
Ok, I had the first part of my interview today and asked about spaces and the interviewer said MQ DON'T PAY for spaces. I really hope he was wrong. I will ask again during my second interview.
They certainly always have! - Boy, this is news.
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe that's going to be what we get for Christmas this year.
Spaces :) - MTCandy

Ok, second interview went well and they pay for spaces.

As you stated - you are in the midwest. What about those in the HCA Accounts in the Southeast! NJA - and all we do are corrections for the ILP. Unfortunately - MQ does not give us a choice to do work where work is needed. We are stuck in a BoB that either has work or does not have work. Never understood their thinking. 3cpl will not equal to 50K a year and the benefits are slowly being taken away. How is your 401K as one example? Take a listen to the HCA accounts and tell me how horrible your accounts are. I would love to switch with you for one week.
No you don't! - Reed
[ In Reply To ..]
I would gladly switch with you. You would not last an hour on these accounts. They are continually behind because whenever anyone new comes they're gone in a couple of days because they can't do them.
Granted, I never have NJA; in fact, there's overtime almost every day precisely because the accounts are so bad and very few can do them. Not to mention, the dictators are exceedingly critical about the work.
I have done MT for 10 years which equals about 20 years considering the number of reports I've transcribed including accounts of every type and from every locale. Nothing, nothing is even close to the dictators at these hospitals.
I beg to differ - kiki
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm on an account of 5 huge teaching hospitals in Southern CA. We also have about 90% ESL and the dictators CHANGE about every 6 months. Just when you think you finally have them down, off they go.
You might think you are alone in having difficult accounts, but you are so wrong.

I worked for 16 years in the hospital, and made good money alongside many good docs, many of whom are still around. The docs owned the hospital and took little pay. HCA (Rick Scott at the time) came in and destroyed it. Transcription was outsourced to Edix (long gone). My immediate intuition about Rick Scott was "cheese ball," so my gut was right. He created turmoil for docs and employees alike.
Now I see Rick Scott on TV touting a "conservative alternative" for health care. As a conservative myself, when his face shows up on the TV, I remind myself how he punked an excellent hospital. That's a polite way of saying he lied like a dog. While he may have repented, I have no "fuzzy feelings" for Rick Scott. The good/veteran docs feel the same way.
Government-run healthcare, continued outsourcing abroad will make Rick Scott and his ilk like a walk in the park.
This was a bit of a dissertation, but I felt the need to weigh in on this massive disaster.
I, too, worked for EDiX. - poodlepassion

But I left after 5 years when they started making us pay them back for every blank we left. The Q is doing the same but in a different way, dinging us about having less than a certain percentage of blanks, most of which get passed on to the client. Actually looking back at my years with EDiX, they were the gravy years when I actually made a living and was still relatively happy with my job. My last day with them was a memorable one: 9/11.

I started w/ them shortly after they instituted the dock in pay for errors made on reports. I remember being on a conference call with some very rightfully disgruntled employees. They did away w/ that system not long after.

They chewed up the supes and spit them out big-time. The supes weren't the problem (well, not all of them). In fact,I am still very close to a couple of them. They're good as gold, just as my former Q CTL.
MQ has 3000 MTs -- when I started was told - 8000 hmmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
Other MTs are glad that you are in the position that you say. However, you seem a bit judgmental towards other MQ MTs with different experiences. Wait until you've had the same experiences as others whom you judge. I used to make more money than you working less than 80 hours per week. Now, MQ has changed so much, I would starve without my other job. No warning with all the changes, especially the drop in pay, yet I still do 99% ESLs. I certainly hope you never go through my experiences. Your reality at MQ as an MT sure doesn't negate or change the reality of other MTs that MQ has hurt after being loyal and hardworking. I hope you have a wonderful new year and that you are able to maintain your job making your salary at MQ. I do, however, hope you lose the judgmental attitude toward other posters who are barely making minimum wage but doing same amount of work. Also, I though MQ had 8,000 MTs at one point last year. Even in their own advertisings they stated over 8,000. So, when did MQ drop to 3,000 MTs? This is certainly news.

I'm happy at MQ. I've always been able to make a good paycheck. I've been with them for 9 1/2 years, 6 years at a hub office and now I'm at home.
You should do fine, as long as you come in with your mind made up to work hard. I work 3/4 time, five days a week doing 30% - 70% ASR/straight type. I make about 40 - 45 K a year.
I don't think is forum is the best place to get positive feedback on the company for the same reason Reed posted. You have to jump in with both feet, have an understanding of the nature of the "transcription beast" in the modern world and be ready to fight (work HARD, stay on schedule, be available when help is needed in your region...)
The posters on this forum all make themselves out as miserable and bankrupt, never have work, blah blah blah. I just cannot understand why all those horses stay at the dry watering hole, know what I mean.
ANYWAY... insurance is expensive, but it is everywhere now. IT's not bad coverage, just expensive. I'd look outside first. GOOD LUCK on Monday. I hope you do well and join us soon.

And how is that 401K that MQ has now reduced? Do you think we are complaining because we have nothing else to do? You may have work but many of us do not. SA3 is one area that does not! And yes, I am miserable and near bankrupt because of MQ - looking and as soon as I can find something better, I am out of here. Believe me though - Mickey D's is better than MQ if you are stuck in SA3...along with the poor management. I am not a HORSE - thank you and have been in this profession for 30 years but MQ has brought it down to the lowest minimum wage paying job out there now. If you know of some place hiring with decent benefits - please share!!!! I am thirsty!

Maybe I just can't roll with MQ's punches, but with all the changes, cesspool, NJA, insurance changes, timeclock, etc., etc., and especially having to work faster and faster to make what I used to, my head is spinning. I just can't seem to maintain the quality I used to and for some reason my line count is slipping. My pay has shrunk to half what it was with MQ from 8 years ago. I was proud of what I used to make, yet just don't bring home the same paycheck, and am working harder and faster, harder and faster, harder and faster. . .

Maybe they moved their 401K money before changes came. I did. I hear its pretty easy to get a job at Mickey Ds and they have great benefits. Let us know how that goes for you. Drink up.

Don't assume that every MT is of female gender...there are a lot of men out there and they are the primary bread winners in many families.
My fellow MT who left MQ recently did take a job at the Golden Arches and his paycheck is larger than he was recently making at MQ. Last year - he was doing quite well at the Q but with all of the cuts, awful dictators/dictations, NJA and ILP corrections - that check was chopped in half. At least he gets free food and benefits and even had a Christmas party to attend. He also does not have to change his schedule weekly to get enough hours or wait in the lobby until a customer comes in to work. Sounds like a real job to me.

Sounds like an urban legend to me, " a friend of a friend knows this guy who..." Hey whatever, go for it.
I don't understand your opening statement either by the way, "don't assume that every MT is of female gender" ??

I have an interview on Monday to work at a local veterinary clinic doing transcribing full time in house for animal patients. No joke, they have 17 doctors on staff and supposedly a ton of work. I have just about typed for every medical specialty there is in the last 20 years, but never for an animal before. I'm very excited, but I don't want to walk in there sounding stupid. Does anybody have any advice or tips that might help me get the job? Maybe some terminology I could l ...
questions I want to ask. I usually ask about direct deposit, but in light of my recent experience of constantly being paid late (and still not paid!), I am thinking about asking them if they have had or are having any pay issues, but then I wonder if that might be an offensive question to ask, plus if they do not pay on time or at all, it is doubtful that they would say yes, so .......
Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA ...
I waited all day Monday and nothing came, so I emailed her yesterday ...... still nothing, no response whatsoever. I hate to keep pestering her but I was given a start date of 8/8, so I need to get the paperwork faxed, install date setup, training scheduled, etc. Part of me says to give it another day and then call her and another part of me says that this is a sign and just move on to something else.
Any ideas? ...
Once again I have NJA on Monday morning. This is just the way I wanted to start off my week, not!!! CCM says tell her and then either come back on later at NIGHT or she'll add other accounts. I've accepted that wonderful offer before and kicked myself for doing it. I'd rather take the time off unpaid than sit at my computer reading profiles all day long and getting half my lines in. I'll never understand why this company can& ...
Got rejection E-mail for in-house job I applied for. Then less than 1 hour later, got rejection E-mail for a government clerk position I had applied for like 2 months ago. Then later get E-mail with spreadsheet from supervisor with our lines, average lph, percentages, etc. Apparently there really are people doing 200-300+ lph. There is no way in the world they are typing the level 3 ESL and ASR nonsense that I get. I have to listen, research, listen again with ...
I have always gotten paid time-and-a-half for holiday pay on the Fourth of July, which is one of Medquist's holidays (or so it is listed as and always has been), and was told by CCM we would be paid time-and-a-half for that Monday's work done since even though it wasn't the fourth, it is when it is nationally celebrated. However, on today's paycheck I did not get any holiday pay at all!!! I went back several years to check and I always got paid this way for w ...

It means that if you do ACH you get your pay 9 days after you should have gotten your pay. Think about what that means for your bank account versus what it means for their bank account. It is significant when multiplied by hundreds of employees. It means much worse if you get an actual check in the mail. ...

They keep telling us "work is light". "It's a holiday". (Well, I guess somewhere in the world, it might be a holiday.) If work is REALLY that light, how on earth is this company staying afloat?
