mandatory to work Monday (holiday) if you are normally scheduled to be off?

What does your employment agreement/contract say? Beyond that-- - sm

--unless some state law prohibits it--the companies can pretty much make whatever rules they want and you need to follow them if an employee.

It's pretty standard for companies to have it written into their contracts that they can require work on holidays; otherwise, they'd have no coverage.

Where I work, if a holiday falls on our normal day of the week to work, we are to work it, unless we have made special arrangements to have the day off, as we would for any other regularly-scheduled work day that we want to take off for any reason.

For me, this means I work every Thanksgiving--which I am actually glad of, because it gets me out of the burdensome family obligations. ;)

it falls on your regular day off. An employer may ask you to work that day but they cannot legally penalize or reprimand you for not agreeing to work on a regular (normal) day off.

Furthermore, they cannot REQUIRE you to do so unless it is written as such in your employment/contract policies.

So, if it's your regular day off and there's nothing about being required to work on holidays that fall on your regular day off, then don't do it if you don't want to.

Where I'm at, we have to work holidays only if it falls on our normal work day, but always get it off otherwise. However, they do occassionally ask for volunteers during the holidays.

an IC, no they cannot make you work. As an employee, they may be able to, scheduled day off or not, I'm not sure. A lot of places have mandatory overtime sometimes, so it may be the case that they can require you to work. I am lucky, where I work (employee) we are not required to work holidays, but they ask for volunteers--even it is only a couple of hours just so accounts are covered since hospitals are 24/7.

questions I want to ask.
