I have a job interview on Monday and am thinking about sm - Penniless MT
Posted: Mar 22, 2013
questions I want to ask. I usually ask about direct deposit, but in light of my recent experience of constantly being paid late (and still not paid!), I am thinking about asking them if they have had or are having any pay issues, but then I wonder if that might be an offensive question to ask, plus if they do not pay on time or at all, it is doubtful that they would say yes, so .......
Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA
Doubt they would be honest - My thought

Nobody is going to admit you aren't gong to get paid on time. I would just quit if they were late more than once. It's only an offensive question if they're guilty.
P.S. - see msg

I'm curious, though, as to why you would even consider working somewhere that you were unclear about.
As bad as the biggie companies are (I finally quit), we do know they pay on time, every time.
I guess I just like the smaller companies. I work part time for a small sm - Penniless MT

MTSO in Pennsylvania. It is straight typing and she pays a bit more than most nowadays and I love the work. Pay is once a week, on time, every time except for maybe a day late a couple of times in the 3 years I have been there. If she had more work, I'd work there full time. I work for a big company also and I have liked the work, but I cannot always count on it. I took on a 3rd job when someone I considered a friend started her own company. She, too, pays a bit more but I am tired of her always being late with the pay and not answering e-mails or phone calls. It is unprofessional, to say the least, and on a different level, friends do not treat friends that way. The way Nuance and M*Modal are gobbilng up companies, I may get stuck there at some point, but I'm trying to avoid it.
I Chose to Get out of the Biz - My thought
[ In Reply To ..]
I really would have loved to just work for a small place after quitting that horrible big place, but I know the smaller ones are going to get gobbled up (or go out of biz), so I chose to learn a new skill set (general office software), as I only have a few years until retirement, and I can't take getting gobbled up. It's sooo draining, chasing MT companies.
I wish you all luck with the small companies, and I know you have gone in with your eyes wide open.
I admire you. I always thought I would keep doing MT forever, sm - Penniless MT

even past retirement age, but now I even wonder if the profession will exist by then. Unfortunately, I didn't finish college (kicking myself) and I really have no other skills at this point. I thought about going back to college, but it is so expensive, plus I'm in my 50s now, so not sure I'd be the one new employers are looking to hire. I try to take it just one day at a time and keep my eyes open for any new possibilities. I am lucky in that I am still doing straight typing. I don't know how people survive doing editing at the pitiful rates they pay. Maybe I just need to find a gazillionaire who wants to be my sugar daddy. :-)
Do Not Kick Yourself - see message

Do not kick yourself. Those of us who started 10 or so years ago and chose to go into/stay in MT, had expected it to be an actual career until retirement. This mess was NOT supposed to happen.
Way back when, when I started 14 years ago, I was clearly informed that VR would be in the future and be prepared to change with the times. BUT, what they didn't tell me (and probably didn't know themselves) was that we would be paid less to edit. I was told and believed that my skill set would be valuable, valuable enough to catch the serious errors VR made. NOT SO. I got paid less for all that wonderful knowledge.
Do I feel duped by the people who told me that? Actually, no. I do not believe that any of us could have anticipated the companies would have scammed us into this.
It is a horrible sadness. I do urge people who are thinking of going into this field to PLEASE, PLEASE read these notes. Are some of the people sour grapes because they got terminated? Of course! But do you all also read that people are QUITTING left and right? Do you think that we who are in our 50s WANT to start a new career? Heck no!
I for one have no real regrets. I had quite a thriving career for many, many years and it was sooo good. I do, however, have extreme sadness over what it has all become and that at the ripe old age of 58, I actually have to "train" for another career due to not technology, but horrible corporate greed.
Yeah, same here. I'm getting into my mid-60's, & - just started school again. Ridiculous!

Meanwhile, there's now little to no hope of retiring, because while I'm in school, and still slogging along in MT, doing low-pay editing, I'm only getting along by raiding my retirement money every month to pay my rent. I'm sure by the time I'm retirement age, it'll all be gone. Oh well. If all else fails, I can always start robbing banks at age 80.
I'm doing the same as you - leaving MT soon, learning - general office/PC skills - and

the more the better. I've been a one-trick-pony for far too long! I'm in school currently, and the more I learn each day, the more I realize I've forgotten or never learned because I was an MT. I plan to learn a lot about word processing, and as much as possible about graphic arts, book-keeping, etc. That way I'll have more job opportunities than were EVER available with MT. And most likely it'll be far more interesting work, for much nicer people, for more realistic pay.
Same here... - with a lot of these remote

jobs, it is us who should be asking THEM for references. You really don't have to look far on this message board to find fly-by-night ripoff MT companies.
I do not think this question is out of line whatsoever, and if they couldn't or wouldn't answer it I would not take the job and if you don't get the job because you asked, you are better off anyway.
Thanks to both of you. I will feel better asking. It is a sm - Penniless MT

a question a person should NOT have to ask. As bad as I think Walmart is, they don't skip paying you for a month at a time.
I'd want to get it in writing! After all, we have to sign - all these compliance and confidentiality

promises for these companies. They do background checks on us, credit checks, and make us adhere to schedules, often even if we're IC's. Not to mention promising to do a set minimum number of lines, with a minimum number of errors. If I'm going to live up to my part of the bargain, and do all those things, then they can bloody well pay me the CORRECT amount of money, and ON TIME.
I'm not doing MT "for the good of Mankind", I'm doing it to pay my bills. If they can't pay me on time, it messes with my credit, and costs me money if I pay MY bills late. So yes, by all means ask, try to get a promise of on-time pay in WRITING, and also throw the name of the employer out here on MTStars, and see what others say about their on-time pay history. Forewarned is forearmed.
Well, you can't really expect them to tell you if they pay late. - sm

I have read negative comments about a company and decided to give them a shot for myself and found everything I read about them to be true and the recruiter to be FAR from honest.
A company is NOT going to tell you if they have had issues with pay in the past. If they did that, how would they get help? With the way MTSOs have become, you have to research, research, research, take what the recruiter says with a grain of salt, jump in and hope/pray for the best. It's just the way it is is now.
i work for a small company and . . s/m - been there

when this lady hired me, I point blank asked her about payment and she was honest with me. We have done the "check is in the mail" since I have started working for her and have not had a problem. She has always paid on time, the correct amount, and the checks have never bounced. So, yes, there are still a "few good ones left."
Maybe ask this way - anon

What if you followed your direct deposit question with a question about their protocols in the event the direct deposit doesn't go through as planned or if your paper check isn't received on the appropriate date? What they say (or don't say) might help you figure out the answer to what you really want to know.

Not Sure What To Do. I Had An Interview On Monday And She Said She Would Send Me An Offer Letter. Aug 03, 2011I waited all day Monday and nothing came, so I emailed her yesterday ...... still nothing, no response whatsoever. I hate to keep pestering her but I was given a start date of 8/8, so I need to get the paperwork faxed, install date setup, training scheduled, etc. Part of me says to give it another day and then call her and another part of me says that this is a sign and just move on to something else.
Any ideas? ...
NJA - It Must Be Monday Jan 25, 2010Once again I have NJA on Monday morning. This is just the way I wanted to start off my week, not!!! CCM says tell her and then either come back on later at NIGHT or she'll add other accounts. I've accepted that wonderful offer before and kicked myself for doing it. I'd rather take the time off unpaid than sit at my computer reading profiles all day long and getting half my lines in. I'll never understand why this company can& ...

Holiday Pay On Monday, 07/05/10 Jul 26, 2010I have always gotten paid time-and-a-half for holiday pay on the Fourth of July, which is one of Medquist's holidays (or so it is listed as and always has been), and was told by CCM we would be paid time-and-a-half for that Monday's work done since even though it wasn't the fourth, it is when it is nationally celebrated. However, on today's paycheck I did not get any holiday pay at all!!! I went back several years to check and I always got paid this way for w ...
