Conference call for my scolding coming up... - Worried

Posted: Mar 05, 2015

Failed January and February audits by a hair.  Just got my email for a conference call.  So I wonder if it will be PM or firing?  Any ideas?  I feel like a little kid with a bad grade on my report card.  The thing is...if this were a report card my score would be considered great!

Anyone else have this happen that can give me a clue what is going to happen, please, nicely???  Frown

regarding one sided taping of conversations and then tape it without telling them if at all possible. But regardless tape it and then request clarification via email. All about documentation and cya.

taping - curious

You say you can tape the person you are talking to as long as you don't tape your own voice? How would you do that? Maybe I just don't understand what you mean. What would you do this for? To have a record of what they said in case you are fired? Also, what is cya?

Performance management. They always make sure another person is on the phone so they have a "backup" to their convo.

So you think it will be PM? - Worried

Those are always so hard to work your way out of...could be my demise! I guess I shouldn't worry too much. I do believe I would be able to get unemployment and have a nice break while trying to figure out what to do for work. I certainly wouldn't go back to this! I remember the days when 98 was passing! This is so belittling!!! I am so tired of this kind of pressure for minimum wage!!!

Recording the conversation is a good idea! I am home alone during the day. I will call from the home phone, put it on speaker, and record with my mobile. Thanks for the tip!

It's terrifying and degrading, but usually goes a lot better than you fear. It's still extremely wrong that they do it considering the absurd quality standard. Nonetheless, I'm fairly convinced that 90% of these things are just to scare us into line and then they bring up your score by picking better reports the next time.

Probably shouldn't do what I did and argue with them. 6 years ago I tore the QA supervisor a new one by pointing out all the mistakes she made in reviewing my report (I had stayed up the night before, gone back over the reports and created a QA report on the QA report.) Then sent an essay to my boss to forward up the ladder about "psychological breach contract" and it's effects on employee morale, productivity and quality, combined with what I felt were policies creating a fake sense of quality while destroying the real thing. The conversation ended when I asked what the ILPs quality requirement was.

Two more failed audits later and I quit to preserve my resume.

My real advice (take with copious grains of salt) is to be firm, but nice, and promise to keep doing your best. From what I've seen, the purpose of these things is for the two managers on the phone to go over a check list with you. Sometimes they ask if something's wrong or if you're having problems with something (avoid shouting things like "everything you people do to me!") and most of its just dumb advice. Have you ever tried wearing a headset? Do you watch the screen when you type? If you don't understand something, do you listen to it again? I have never once received any piece of advice from any quality coach that was something I either didn't already know or wasn't helpful at all. Not their fault though. I mean what can you tell a fellow MT? The simple stuff everyone knows and the complicated stuff can't be taught over a phone in an hour.

As for raising your quality, find better doctors and then please share with me! But the actual call is a cake walk.

Thank you! - Worried

I am off in an hour...I am going to try to just forget about it until Monday. That is when my appointment is. My last mistake was stupid but unfortunately it does happen. If they would look at my other reports most were 100%! The 1 failure drags the score down for the whole month. Anyway thank you for the kind words of advice! Much appreciated!

Good luck - TJ

I will not be surprised if I will be joining you. Same scenario here for me. Barely missing that 99.5% mark. But oh we have to go through the tasks of being talked to. So know you are thought of by many, and let us know how it goes.
Thanks! What I find sad too is... - Worried

I'm actually a good employee. I make my lines, rarely call in sick, and I'm always on time. This is my first time dealing with quality issues since the pods. All the different work we get this is really no surprise! They are always crying for overtime, I can't see them firing us all. Good luck to you! I will let you know how it goes.

And don't forget the ole degrading question they ask..."Do you pee a lot? Cause if you do, you should really sign off first." And DON'T under any circumstances think about taking a poop break. Corporate finds that to be unacceptable behavior! Hands on the keyboard! #NoSoupForYou!

I pass, I fail, and back and forth but no one ever bothers me..My idle time is high, on purpose, cause Im an a.. I consciously review my reports with the mouse..so my time idle time stays high, but my line counts are in the 250 range..Just kind of curious what sets the company off on some people and leaves others alone..Because I was in docqumanage a few days back and documented several wrong things, equipment names spelled wrong kind of things. I started keeping a list of things I find wrong now also,,not that it matters but like I say, Im the ultimate a....In my own small world I guess it makes me feel better.
99.39 for January and 99.43 for February - Worried
[ In Reply To ..]
I passed with flying colors prior to that...had 1 failed audit each the past 2 months. She did kind of warn me last month about the company "requirements" so when I saw the failed audit come through in February I kind of knew I wouldn't pass for that month. It is so hard to recover the month. I did come so close too!
Weird, I've done worse than that.. - guess my day is coming

And in all honestly, the best thing that could happen to me is to be fired, it would force me to do better in life.

I am not as heavy of a producer though...maybe that is it. I do meet my requirement but I am not over 200.

Great advice - sb

[ In Reply To ..]
Just one more thing to add - they always say don't discuss anything personal. Again, kinda hard to avoid when it's directly involving your work at times. Oh, let's just say you live in a duplex with paper thin walls and frat boys are partying over there day and night till all hours and cops have been there more than once... Threw that tidbit in there and they could even hear the boys thumping in the background during the call. I said, yes, I think all things considered and this place not being very condusive to life as we know it, I'm still maintaining 99% quality - and most of my sanity.

Been there....... - Meme

I too, have been on PM. I dreaded the "call." I was more than degrading. She sounded like she was reading it, and she probably was. Was not told someone was listening. Anyway, smacked my hand, spanked my butt, and sent me on my way. BUT that was the longest 6 months of my life! Second guessed everything, thought, re-thought, and just plain stressed myself into 20 mg of lisinopril a day. I am off now and have been a few months, but still feel the "eyes" watching my every move, and the veiled threats when I get feedback. So for what it is worth, that which does not kill us only makes us stronger...... Chin up

Probably just first verbal PM warning. - dnr

I doubt TSM would schedule an appointment to fire you.

Been on PM once before. Nothing you can do but do your best! No matter how crappy they try to tell you that you are!

You are absolutely right dnr - Worried

[ In Reply To ..]
I thought the same thing...she would have fired me on the spot. That is also all I can do is my best. I did make a dumb mistake in February. I really do try though! Bad streak of luck...I hate the pressure but would rather not get fired.

Don't worry! - MTTX

[ In Reply To ..]
Been there myself last year. First step is verbal warning. More focused audits and conference call in a week to go over whether you have improved or not. Pay reduction is not until 3rd step, and I think firing is 5th step. I was on PM for 3 weeks with no pay reduction. Just keep saying, I'm doing my best, thank you for your help. Keep a good attitude toward the call and you will be fine.

Not sure which company we're talking about, but... - sb

[ In Reply To ..]
Last year I had the pleasure of getting to the performance action plan part for failure to meet LPH resulting in MUP they said. Was so confused because at that time, I wasn't even sure what MUP was or what caused it. I actually thought it was like a helpful thing to get us up to minimum wage if we were OOW, etc. Right? Finally was told that I could log in and out 20 times a day if necessary but had to avoid MUP. Was so proud I got it down from $43 to $8 by the end. Got the phone call saying they were terminating me for failure to reach $0. Couldn't help tears. Didn't know how that happened. THEN they gave me details - looking things up, being a*** also. I said, you're seriously going to terminate me over $8??? Long pause between the 2 and HR asked TSM if it was okay to give me another chance. Oh, ok! Long story, sorry but I thought that was the cruelest most ridiculous mind game ever. And got the same thing just recently, threatening because I didn't meet my hours. Had been OOW for most of the pay period! Jeez, this is long. Asked to please reduce hours to 20 a week (and hour a day medical break). Got very loudly rebuffed multiple times like a child and was told "The easiest thing for anyone to do in life is to go to work!" Still talking down to me I was told I could go down to 4 hours a day and mandatory Saturday. Actually begged at that point that I was unable to do Saturday. She more or less hung up after saying 1 minute under after 2 weeks and we're gonna have to let you go. Let TSM finish the call. Really am sorry how long this was but I am still convinced that was borderline harrassment or something. Was shaking so bad and hyperventilated had to ask if I could take the rest of the day off. I want to know if there is anyone in this company that it is safe to report things to like that. Don't want to use the word bullied but I'm still shaking writing it down. There has to be some allowance they can make for this Saturday BS. Feel like things are being done on purpose now. Also, never knew you could go below 20 hours and still be part time until that day. Take my primary away again also??? BTW, just worked my 2 hours and it was all my original primary work the whole time. Sorry again, just hope someone has some advice. Not quitting now just on principle. Besides, don't know the laws, but think you have to be fired. My sister needs me Saturdays... Thanks for listening (send me the bill in the mail:)

LOL. 150 lph x my editing line rate is less than my state minimum wage. - dnr

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't even comprehend why my lph is falling below 150. Just listening and making a few stops to format and correct is now resulting in less than 150 lph. It is as if something changed in the counting. I will have to do a line count by copying into word.

I have slowed down the audio though to make sure I don't miss any of the stupid picky stuff that doesn't even deserve any deduction.

not meeting requirements - curious

[ In Reply To ..]
All of the posts I read on here regarding not meeting requirements have to do with audits and quality. Seems like everyone must be consistently above 150, so why not try slowing down?

Slowing down is not an option. Now not meeting lph. - dnr

[ In Reply To ..]
Just got notice that there is a warning for me to go sign on Utilipro that I have not been meeting lph. Well, I'm passing quality audits though! Heck, my TSM skipped a step in this PM process.

Bad sound, lots of additional unfamiliar accounts, horrible ASR. The other night it was to the point I had to look at the CP for my usual accounts because I couldn't remember who wanted what anymore.

I notice a 95+ percent correlation with ASR quality and my lph. The more I have to stop to correct, the more time it takes me to do a report! Add to that Dr. Mush Mouth who shot my count down to 100 lph doing a very unfamiliar (to me) brain angiogram, angioplasty, and stenting procedure which took him 10 minutes to dictate. Of course, the ASR was horrible because he can't form words and talks 100 mph.

Remember being told this - sb

[ In Reply To ..]
Once again, another contradiction, it seems to me. But, I was told if you take too long on a report it contributes to the deadly MUP. That's one that really angers ummm, someone. Some guy whose last name starts with R and ends with i maybe?

It's been a long time - MModal Livestock

[ In Reply To ..]
since I was far enough above 150 to give me any wiggle room in regards to quality. 10 years ago, I could do over 300 lines an hour and consistently stayed in the 200-250 range. I also got 99% quality when the requirement was 98%.

Those days are over and won't be coming back. Besides, as has been pointed out, lines are money. The company doesn't really care about quality. They care about talking points. 99.6% quality sounds fancy. It's a nice thing to tell the hospitals we can guarantee them. Of course, we stopped using percentages years ago and now it's really just 99.6 points. And critical and non-critical errors usually have no effect on patient safety because they are overblown minor errors. For instance, if I said in the middle of a multi-page document "The patient were having problems with back pain" instead of "was", according to MModal I have changed the meaning of the sentence and rendered it impossible for future readers to figure it out. But it's a typo and it's an obvious one and there's no way it could affect care. Whereas when a doctor mumbles his way through the allergies, puts in the wrong patient information, puts the same medication under medications and allergies, etc. their feet are not held to the fire. In fact, they are held to no standard whatsoever. They don't even have to speak basic English.

Combine terrible dictators, overly complicated CPs, poor audio, a hopeless ASR system that will never work properly, personal distractions (yes, I know we shouldn't have any, but my body has a strange way of continuing to exist in the physical plane of reality while I'm at work), medical issues, stress, etc., and you have a perfect storm of quality issues that makes it difficult to nearly impossible for even really great MTs to thrive in these conditions.

So, while I understand the desire to improve the transcription end, 99% was more than enough to ask for. From now on, any and all improvements in quality will be directed to the dictation end.

I made 99.75 on my audit. - mom2huskies

[ In Reply To ..]
I had 6 jobs audited and I made one mistake. I was told that 99.75 was not quite good enough. Sorry Mmodal but I am human and I make mistakes. By the way I thought 99.75 was pretty good given what I have to work with.

This was a very good post. nm - Lexi

slow down. I haven't had a raise in more years than I care to think about. For as long as I can remember, whenever the subject of a line rate increase was brought up, management's response was always "If you want more money, type faster." Well, there are consequences to that, and I think they're starting to see them. (And if they're not, then they're even stupider than I always thought they were.)

Totally Condescending Phone Calls - chillywinter

[ In Reply To ..]
These conference calls to "help you" after you "fail" an audit are a waste of time and are humiliating (in fact, I'm convinced that is their only purpose). My TSM and performance management coach spent 10 minutes going over my "failed" report and if the correction should have been "in regards to" as opposed to "in regard to." At one point, I simply put my phone on mute, read a book, and let them hash it out. Just be sure to document the time in Teamwork as a Conference Call so you will at least be paid for it!

I feel horrible for the stress they put you under - This is what I did

[ In Reply To ..]
No..I will not take a "conference call" to discuss why my last two audits came back at 98.7, sorry. I have better things to do than listen to two people (one absurdly corporate HR guy with a laughable accent and my ineffective not needed supervisor), who could not do what I do given two years of intense training, but I would be up to speed on their respective jobs inside 10 hours. So no, I will not discuss what I can do to improve my performance and not place a comma where there should be none, or capitalize a generic medication, or put two spaces after a number instead of one. Thanks but no thanks. That is why I quit this ridiculous profession and soul sucking company and have never looked back.

Good luck to you.
