Joint Commission Conference Call. - Need your line/hour you produce.
Posted: Jul 01, 2013This is on Facebook.
I highly doubt this is the joint commission - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I see it on the facebook page, but where does it originate from? Did you read the small red print on the bottom where it says "we need to you LIKE mymt.me on facebook..." and "we may not see it your reply....?" Who is mymt.me and how are they getting an audience with JCAHO? Sorry. Don't buy it.
not just you doubting it - research
[ In Reply To ..]
Having supplied the information requested by the Joint Commission staff who audited the hospital where I worked, they were not EVER interested in this type of information. It is beyond the scope of what it is they do. I think someone just wants you to give them specifics and will do whatever they want once they have it.
Did you notice the plans to launch a pay-per-use MT website ($4.95 a month) in the near future? Sounds like redeaux of MTDaily when it switched to pay-per-use in the 1990's. I don't give information to someone willy nilly just for them to cash in on a website.
Website - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Just because she is launching a website for $4.95 a month (and wow...a whole $5), doesn't mean she's trying to get anything from you. It's kind of like being part of a union...you pay dues to be part of a union...to get info, protection, etc. that you want to get from that union. She is creating a website for MTs only with lots of information, ways to meet up with other MTs, a chat board, etc. It is taking her time and money to put this together, as well as the time and money it will cost to maintain it. Why shouldn't she be paid for the information she is researching and providing?? People need to get a grip on here. You need to leave your house once in a while to see that the world is not out to get you for crying out loud. Not everyone is a scam artist.
it's the Joint Commission claim that is the problem - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
more power to her if she is launching a website and can make money on it. I await proof that the Joint Commission is going to have a conference call with an MT on facebook. I would be happy to proven wrong, by the way.
it is intellectial property (mis)management that is a problem - research
[ In Reply To ..]
The same way that I contributed to a LOT of discussions on a (first) free website that converted to a (secondarily) pay-per-use website, I am offended that my thoughts are stolen by someone who may be mis-representing themselves in a collaboration with the Joint Commission.
The ONLY power that Joint Commission has comes in the form of recommendations (emphasis on recommendations) to providers of health care to those entities seeking reimbursement from government subsidies such as Medicare and Medicare. If you fail compliance in meeting turn-around-times, their recommendation is to fail that part of the audit. They investigate whether an entity is in compliance with recommendations. They have absolutely no power to enforce things such as pay per line, recommendations about a min. pay per line, etc.
People fall in and blather their information to crooks all the time while being convinced the website is legitimate. Prove the legitimacy, and I will offer a different opinion.
why should she not be paid for union activities? - research
[ In Reply To ..]
Is that really your question?
Because I don't believe in unions, thank you very much. Does everyone - all of those 3200 plus followers - know she wants to use the information they provide to make money from them? I don't agree, therefore, my vote is to say no; my intellectual property counts for something and if she wants to pay me for those thoughts, my price is not $4.95 a month. My consulting price is closer to $100 an hour - or free here on MTStars. Should MTStars decide to go to a pay-per-use site, I have the choice to stop posting my thoughts.
To disguise helping the MTs by using big words like Joint Commission seems deceptive to me when the plan is clearly to create a network to benefit MTs if they will only vomit up their banking account information for $4.95 a month...
Thank you, but no. (psst, the answer is no)...

I notice that the moderators of this board have created a wonderful place for MTs and others to get together, exchange information, list resumes, find jobs, etc. and they do not charge us a cent. (BTW, Thank you, MTStars!) Yes, people do need to get a grip. They need to (1) Be thankful for MTStars and (2) Really do some research before joining the new website. It may be just fine. But it is about $60 a year. That is $600 over 10 years. Do you think it will be worth it? It may or may not be, but people need to give it consideration and do their due diligence just as they would before making ANY purchase. And it IS a purchase. Personally, it looks to me like she is trying to reinvent the wheel. Look what happened to MTDaily. However, the biggest problem I have with it is the Joint Commission jazz. That to me reeks of misrepresentation. I have dealt with Joint Commission audits and something seems off about this whole "conference call" thing. If the Joint Comission conference call is any evidence of what will be presented on the new site, I say, Caveat emptor. Just caveat emptor.

The only thing Jcom is concerned about is the timely backlog of charts. CHARTS have to be completed up to date and our reports are part of that.
Production they could care less about - production and our pay has nothing to do with whether or not a hospital's license is renewed. My God - these techno-tramps will stop at nothing to gain info.

Sheesh. I am NOT the OP or the creator of that page, but if you aren't familiar with the site, why would you make up things and comment on it? I follow the page, along with 3200+ others, because it has a ton of useful MT information on it. 50 MTs have already commented on the site regarding the above question, so are you calling everybody "bogus"?
An appointment IS set up with the Joint Commission. Per a post on Friday: "a very responsive Joint Commission set up a conference call yesterday with four of their agents and me. Set for July 23, 2013". Which is why they are collecting firsthand experiences for topics of discussion.
I started following the page a couple a months ago when a fellow MT told me about it, one of the reasons being it has lots of excellent info and interaction between fellow MTs. Some of us like to keep up with the industry and follow other MT-related sites. Just because you don't, you feel you can call people "techno-tramps"? Wow. SMH.

I hope you realize that there is no law against making stuff up. I have no knowledge of a Joint Commission conference call, and since the page advertises:

I understand that people want a voice, but I do not believe they are thinking about what is being asked of them or about the the role of Joint Commission. I think the FB page owner is indeed trying to reinvent the wheel and will end up with egg on her face once ANYONE gets feedback from the largest MTSO's who will share their QA scoring procedures to prove her wrong.
I am personally offended at the thought of someone stepping in late in the game to take money from people who sit in front of their computer day after day with NJA staring back. I see it as another way to rape the MT industry, and people are not just saying no.

Why is it so unbelievable? Have you tried? Has anyone you know tried? Everyone comes on this site and moans and groans, yet no one does anything about it. So because someone has decided they are going to try to change the world for MTs, this person is bogus? There is absolutely no way the joint commission could possibly be interested in hearing what she has to say when she is probably the only person who has had enough gall to complain? Here is her original post....along with her letter to the Joint Commission.

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONISTS - LETTER TO JCAH
First round, letter one, to JCAH regarding reviewing the medical records review standards. It is my belief that if JCAH would employ standards to address the quality of the medical record, these mandates would force behavior change and associated wages. This might be a marathon, as opposed to a sprint, but step one has been launched. Please share with your MT friends. The more people we gather for these actions, the further we get, the louder the voice. Thanks everyone!
Ms Panagopoulous:
I am a medical transcriptionist.
I worked in hospital quality improvement for over 20 years prior to this work, and worked closely with JCAH survey preparation in that capacity. Eventually, I began to do medical transcription as a means to provide an income while I pursued a career in website development. I quickly became appalled at the activities going on in this industry. It is my belief that the current behaviors of this professional group is not contributing to quality documentation in the medical record. There is no true quality improvement analysis in this work, there is no available certification or skills analysis of people doing the work, there is no professional organization that regulates transcriptionists or has any leverage in assuring the quality of healthcare documentation; the current organization, AHDI, is an educational organization, but holds no enforcement powers.
By my analysis, this is the only document-producing industry that does not appropriately proofread its work; important documentation that it is. In my own position, my company looks at only THREE of my reports per month. There is a business model now in place which removes the accountability one step further from the hospital; the MTSO (medical transcription service organization). These companies usually ignore labor laws and have few safeguards in place addressing HIPAA mandates. Their focus is monetary, their methods lack quality focus. The institution of them is frequently diluting access to quality further. Rather than continual improvement of the quality of the medical record, each day the industry engages in increasing efforts to save money which results in less focus on quality.
I am near to launch an online medical transcription website (www.mymt.me). I also have a community of over 3200 transcriptionists engaging in important discussions on Facebook. As a group, we are beginning to take on these issues with various entities to address rampant labor law violations, for one. We are also interested in finding out how our community might work with the Joint Commission in reviewing the current medical record documentation standards. We believe the current industry trends are not serving this important document and that our insight would prove useful to improve the quality and appropriateness of the medical record.
Because of my personal participation and knowledge of Joint Commission processes, I feel this is exactly the organization that would be interested in working with us to mutually improve the quality of healthcare documentation. I am not afraid to roll up my sleeves and do the important work it will take to ensure these changes and bring a new level of quality to this important healthcare process.
I understand this may be a unique request, but I feel it is important and look forward to hearing from you about what we can do to effect important change in the industry.
Sincerely,
Creator, MyMT.me

You need to update your knowledge base. It's actually neither of those acronyms. It's TJC. Several years back, they changed their name to The Joint Commission.
I follow the cited page on Facebook and have talked extensively with the person running it. She's trying to help the profession. So many of you sit on your duffs and do NOTHING but complain and sing your woes. If you don't want to participate in offering info for the call, the simply don't do it. I don't get the need to denigrate and put down every single positive post/person that comes here.
I hope you all have a great day. As to those who could/would fine value in learning from the mymt.me site, I encourage you to at least make up your own mind. (And no, I'm not the person running it, just an old MT who has been around for many years, endured MaryM making money off my posts, and then closing her site off by charging for nothing added.)
If nothing changes....nothing changes.
you're right - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't realize JCAHO had changed its acronym to TJC. (Prior to this change, JCAHO was, in fact, correct.)
I am simply interested in knowing on what basis TJC is agreeing to talk to mymt.me. Is she seeking a kind of accreditation? MTSOs, MTs, MT sites do not require accreditation, so I am trying to understand the basis for the communication with the joint commission.
To all the negativity - what is the big deal? - MT2
[ In Reply To ..]
Do people just like to hear themselves talk? If you don't want to comment on the FREE Facebook link, don't. If you have no clue what the FB page is and its purpose, why make up things? When a future website is created and it has a fee, don't join. Not JC-related, but I personally am happy that one of her biggest concerns is the MTSOs' abuse of the IC classification.
Why JC? The FB page has said her prior background was in hospital quality improvement and she worked with the Joint Commission on surveys, etc. The conference call will include the issue of medical document quality using voice recognition, and she will be posting an outline of topics prior to the JC conference call so MTs can comment further.
If you're not interested, think it's a scam, "have no knowledge" of what is being discussed, and think that sharing your production for VR vs. straight is some kind of personal information-gathering conspiracy, then simply don't join the FREE FB discussion. Not that difficult.
Finally, I especially appreciate her comments regarding this discussion here on MTStars - she's urged the MTs keep it positive and not argue - so this is all I'll say.
arguing and trying to sift through the ilk - research
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, I see a supporter has brought up something not related to TJC efforts, i.e., "one of her biggest concerns is the abuse of MTSOs using the IC classification." (How will TJC help with that??).
Please in plain English: How does soliciting wage earning information tie in to the conference call with TJC? Because if no one uses clear words, no one can understand the intent, no one can develop trust, no real support will be garnered.
"plain English" - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I figured this out for myself; seemed pretty obvious.
A topic will be medical document quality. An issue will be how voice recognition has affected medical document quality. A related subject is how VR has NOT fulfilled its developers' claims of faster/double production (i.e., why MT straight typing vs. VR production statistics are important), or any of the other supposed 'benefits'. To further clarify : An MT transcribes 250 lines an hour straight at 9 cpl and 300 VR at 4 cpl. That MT is now on 100% VR. Her wage has dropped from $22.50 to $12.00 an hour. If you don't think a statistic like that is important in a discussion about the use of VR, well, I can't explain it any more clearly.
It's a simple conference call, a first step. I'm confused by those portraying it as being some 'magic' conference call and that the author claims to fix everything wrong with the MT industry with it. Surprising how much and how willing people are to read negativity into this. Again, it's a conference call, just a step in an open dialogue. It may not accomplish anything, but it's an EFFORT.
If you still don't agree and can't see the connection, then so what? Who cares, it's just a Facebook page. Some are interested, some aren't. But this IS an MT board, and that's why the OP posted Why so intent on trying to convince everyone it has to be something bad? You asked for, in "plain English", the need for VR versus straight production and pay(cut) statistics. I've answered, but I'm sure that wasn't your true intent and you'll argue further.
I don't care either way, just think its terrible when people bash others for no reason. Sad. No more clarification or discussions from me, though I'm sure you'll have to say something.
Why so intent to sell me a used car at a new car price? - research

If you can't see the connection, then you won't have my support. Seems pretty obvious.
The plain English you used did not connect the dots of how she needs to know what I earn when the "topic will be medical document quality. An issue will be how voice recognition has affected medical document quality. A related subject is how VR has NOT fulfilled its developers' claims of faster/double production (i.e., why MT straight typing vs. VR production statistics are important), or any of the other supposed 'benefits'. "
Seems pretty obvious to me that document quality has absolutely not one thing to do with gathering wage earning information, ergo, the person you support is a fraud.
Seems pretty obvious to me.
you're right one step further - research
[ In Reply To ..]
It is my perception that the letter posted elsewhere in this thread seeks to begin a dialog with TJC regarding quality of medical documents. What has me confused is how that extends itself to asking for specifics regarding what people make and how TJC could ever (emphasis on ever!) address the issues of wages or working conditions for transcriptionists.
TJC did work with the a number of groups when formulating the "Do Not Use" list of dangerous abbreviations.
If it is the intent of the FB page owner to somehow educate TJC about quality control issues to seek assistance from TJC regarding quality control, I think she would be better served in researching what our national organization has done and how that information is supported by the large national MTSO's. To report wage earnings and working conditions to TJC has absolutely nothing to do with quality control procedures, other than to blame the working MT's for not caring if they produce quality reports because they don't like what they are paid or how they are treated.
I did not read anything in the letter posted elsewhere about asking TJC to look into physician dictation responsibility, either, nor do I see that effort on the FB page.
So I said all of that to say this: Why does the FB page owner need to know wage information regarding her efforts in soliciting TJC in any collaboration? What is her intent with the information she is gleaning from everyone posting that information? Is she, in fact, going to pull a Morken and claim she holds the intellectual property rights on the information she is gathering and makes money ($4.95 a month per person) when she starts "helping" those MT's? And why did one of her supporters come on here and use the word "union" as part of what the FB page owner's vision? Is the collection of wage information going to be used to start a union and she is using TJC as a lure on a hook?
I don't know this person. I have never heard of this person. Quite frankly, I don't trust how this person presents herself and her visions.
actually, sounds like something ADHI would dream up - just my opinon, but really. NM

radiology department. The only proofreading that gets done is when the referring doctor who receives a report containing errors calls the radiology department to get clarification.
One of our radiologists regularly scans in demos for one patient yet dictates the name of another. If an MT were to make that error so many times, they'd be history.

If this were legitimate, you would use your real name, not Creator, MyMT.me. To my knowledge, Joint Commission concerns themselves with compliance and documentation standards, but they would never be involved in wanting to know someone's line rate. Also, they would never charge people to provide them with information that they could obtain by conducting their own survey. This is a scam.
