how hard is it to learn ER notes? - dnq2001

I have 6 years' experience doing acute care, rehab and clinic notes, how hard to you think it would be for me to pick up ER?

I think ERs are the easiest - you will be fine

I loved ERs cause you could really rack up the lines. Super easy.

I agree, ER is one of the easiest. Kind of like doing H&Ps all day. The only thing is the docs can be even more fast-talking than usual..

Not a big deal. IMO, there are a few things that make ER notes particularly annoying, though: (1) These days, they seem to be dictated mostly by PAs or nurses; (2) ER docs seem to be in a rush to get it over with and talk too fast; and (3) Boring, boring, boring stuff (yawn). Most ER visits I transcribe are not for serious health issues (the common cold, a fractured limb, asking for pain killers that the PCP wouldn't prescribe). Might as well being doing clinic notes. Acute care is at least, on occasion, mildly interesting.

Your mileage may vary, though; doing ER for a metro area might be challenging. It might depend on the docs, too. George Clooney and Noah Wyle might be on call.

If you can do acute care, you can certainly do ER notes. They are no harder than clinic notes, just basic stuff. I would agree with boring, just as clinic is boring. But I could go for boring these days, at least I'd get some good lines in!

Another agreement here, that ER notes should be no problem for you as far as ability. As others have said, a couple of our ER docs talk too fast, and that's the only thing that makes those docs harder to do than others....but if you get the same ones over and over, you'll get familiar with what they're saying.

I also agree that places like a minor emergency center's notes could be pretty dull; but I also agree that I would be happy to settle for dull at this point if it meant decent pay! If it's a larger city's ER (my city is only about 400,000 people, but that's a little larger than some), I always find that weekend work can be VERY interesting if you like that kind of thing. Seems like that's when all the extreme stuff happens! :-D

Just got an e-mail today that we have to learn new accounts with new account specifics, in addition to working on our present account. They are sending our present account to India, but still keeping some of it. I don't know which would be easier - volunteering for a new account or learning DEP. VP always sticks "lower" onto the abdomen exam. Have to delete it from abdomen and add it to the PE subheading "Lower Extremities." There is no other way to edit it, everybody has to edit it this way. But SR keeps getting it wrong. We all need to have a couple of these examples ready for when Phil the IT guy says it is US editing wrong that causes the program not to learn. Or if you abbreviation says it is everyone with different editing styles causing the VR fiasco. ...

It's almost 2 months now on Escript and I'm still straight transcribing more than VR. I can see a lot of ready for editing reports but I hardly get any, and not getting my lines either. Some days, I only get 2 short VR reports. I'm in a really foul mood lately because of it. I used to be an office temp back in the '80s before I was an MT. Anyone know best and cheapest way to learn the new office software? On line? Through an agency? I used to love temping.
