What internet provider do you have? - Older than dirt

Posted: May 23, 2012

Since we work remotely for MTSOs that may be hundreds or even thousands of miles away, can they really tell if we have DSL or calble or satellite or broadband, etc?   I think what I am trying to say is how would they know from that far away what type of internet we have.  I have had terrible luck in landing a job with great experience, 25 years and heavy experience with ESL.  I do not have much in the way of VR, but am willing to learn.  The reason I cannot get a job is because I have satellite internet, though I have been told by others that this works fine with EditScript and many other platforms.  I know it works with DocQScribe because I worked doing that with satellite.   So why???

I am seriously thinking of putting DSL or cable next time I apply for a job.  Honestly how would they know for sure.  Everyone has internet problems even with DSL and cable.  I really do not understand why MTSOs are so much against hiring us with satellite internet.

One reason... Sm - Old Woman

is that satellite is not as secure as DSL/cable, or so they tell me. With that being said, I worked for several years with several different companies using satellite because that is all I could get out here. However, that was back when home satellite internet service was in its infancy and the MTSOs did not know as much about it as they do now.

With that being said, I feel that, if they really wanted to, they would be able to find out that you have satellite by your ISPN. I am of the old school and wouldn't lie on my job application. Research local companies or get your own accounts locally, but please don't run the risk of tarnishing your reputation by lying.

notinsecure - satellite

It is not because of insecurity, and if a recruiter tells you that, they do not know what they are talking about. It is because of the lag time with more pings. Some platforms cannot support this because the system loses the signal before connecting because of more steps, so to speak. If it were insecurity, no companies would allow satellite. Now the 2 big companies allow satellite, and I have worked for 5 years with satellite with no problems.

Are you in a rural area? - Ultra

There is grant money available through the USDA Community Connect program to help rural residents get connected to the internet. Think its web address is www.rurdev.usda.gov -- If you're working, you might qualify for the FCC's rural telemedicine program.

Thanks for advice from both posters. - Old MT

I am in a rural area and do have a government-sponsored internet provider. It is Hughes Net and I think it is just as good as DSL or cable, but you could never convince the MTSOs of that. It is strange that we have to worry about lying to MTSOs, but you know they lie to us all the time and get away with it. I know you are right though about not ruining your reputation by lying on resume or application. Oh well, maybe someday we will get ahead here, LOL.

HI, Have you considered using a wireless cell phone provider for your internet needs. I know AT&T and Verizon offer a few different options depending on your needs. This will work if you have cell phone service where you live. I have used it off and on for years and even while riding in a car. Good luck

Verizon card - satellite

[ In Reply To ..]
I just wanted to share that along with satellite, I have a Verizon card which I pay $50 a month. I have found that companies who do not accept satellite, generally do not accept a wireless connection. Even if they did, in my experience, my card is constantly on/off and I wouldn't trust it stable enough not to lose reports, etc.

Wireless broadband - internet

I have a Verizon USB wireless broadband modem that I use for work wiht my laptop when I'm away from home. It provides a connection speed that is equivalent to DSL and works anywhere there is Verizon coverage. I've never had a problem connecting or working with it.

Which Satellite Internet Provider?
Nov 06, 2014

I currently use Starband, an older satellite provider.  Where I live no DSL, cable or cell phone signal.  Starband just raised my monthly rate, so I am looking into switching.  I have Dish TV and see that they have internet satellite, but I don't know anyone who has this.  I have been doing transcription from home for 18 years and have used Starband since then.  I was wondering if any MTs work with satellite and which provider, and if they are satisfied with th ...

KNOW WHO IS YOUR PROVIDER
Nov 04, 2012

On Thursday, Nov 1, 2012, I received a phone call telling me that I was fired. After 19 years of being an MT/MME I was told that my line count was too low. I did get a call the week before questioning me about my count. I guess that was my warning. All of us who work for MModal know the changes that constantly go on. We all know the imperfection of SR. We all know about offshore. We all know that you really get straight transcription. Maybe my 11 cents a line was too high. What ever ser ...

Provider Going To EMR -- Hourly Vs CPL?
Jun 08, 2011

One of my providers is going to switch over to EMR.  I've looked into the program and it's got a similar document section to MS Word.  However, with them going to EMR, I'm assuming I'll lose quite a bit of my bulk work (macros, etc) that I currently have with "straight typing." So my question is this ... is it worth it to transcribe EMR for a CPL rate or is it better to renegotiate my "contract" and go hourly?  I'm an IC/MTSO so get no benefits. Would ap ...

Anyone With Broadband Internet, Do You Go Over 5 GB?

I have had it with Hughesnet and am going to try Verizon broadband.  I was just wondering if others who use it have any trouble staying under the 5 GB monthly limit.  I really only use my computer for work, work email and a small amount of personal email, paying bills, and facebook.  Very occasionally a you tube video or something like that.  I'm not sure what that all would add up to. ...

I use Express Scribe and for no apparent reason three days ago the internet began shutting down EVERY time I click on my next job - I have to open everything back up up to four times before it will finally open the job.
