Provider going to EMR -- hourly vs CPL? - midwestMT

Posted: Jun 08, 2011

One of my providers is going to switch over to EMR.  I've looked into the program and it's got a similar document section to MS Word.  However, with them going to EMR, I'm assuming I'll lose quite a bit of my bulk work (macros, etc) that I currently have with "straight typing."

So my question is this ... is it worth it to transcribe EMR for a CPL rate or is it better to renegotiate my "contract" and go hourly?  I'm an IC/MTSO so get no benefits.

Would appreciate any serious input on this.

Try to go hourly - mt

A lot of times (if you are going to be doing voice recognition) you end up putting more work into the document than you would just typing it outright, and the pay is half what you would make with straight typing. I can make about $15/hour production with typing and I'm lucky to hit $8.50/hour editing. And I'm considered a quick editor (400+ lph).

EMR - MT

I charge per report. I don't know if that helps or not because all situations are different, but it takes very little time for me so actually charging by report/patient was much easier and more profitable in the long run. Occasionally, there are longer narrative sections, but that is rare for this provider so that also is a factor.

MidwestMT, I really think it depends on how fast - you are and what sort of copy your SR produces.

You will make many new macros to do your corrections faster and, since you're presumably not focusing on training the system, you will still use your text insertions to replace entire standard areas instead of hopping around in them fixing little mistakes.

Hourly is dependable and you know where you are, but IF you can edit this stuff fast you may make more money working cents/line, perhaps significantly more, than you could negotiate as an hourly rate. However, as MT does with her clients, I'd seriously consider charging per report. That's something everyone can understand, and hopefully they might not pay too much attention to how much time it actually takes you to blow a lot of them out. Good luck, Pragmatist

Let me amend my answer - mt

I work as an employee for an MTSO and get paid per line. I am also an IC for a psychologist and I charge per report, which makes me about $12 more per hour than the MTSO. You didn't ask about charging per report, and I just didn't think about it. I agree with the others. Charging per report is best.

KNOW WHO IS YOUR PROVIDER
Nov 04, 2012

On Thursday, Nov 1, 2012, I received a phone call telling me that I was fired. After 19 years of being an MT/MME I was told that my line count was too low. I did get a call the week before questioning me about my count. I guess that was my warning. All of us who work for MModal know the changes that constantly go on. We all know the imperfection of SR. We all know about offshore. We all know that you really get straight transcription. Maybe my 11 cents a line was too high. What ever ser ...

What Internet Provider Do You Have?
May 23, 2012

Since we work remotely for MTSOs that may be hundreds or even thousands of miles away, can they really tell if we have DSL or calble or satellite or broadband, etc?   I think what I am trying to say is how would they know from that far away what type of internet we have.  I have had terrible luck in landing a job with great experience, 25 years and heavy experience with ESL.  I do not have much in the way of VR, but am willing to learn.  The reason I cannot get a job is ...

Which Satellite Internet Provider?
Nov 06, 2014

I currently use Starband, an older satellite provider.  Where I live no DSL, cable or cell phone signal.  Starband just raised my monthly rate, so I am looking into switching.  I have Dish TV and see that they have internet satellite, but I don't know anyone who has this.  I have been doing transcription from home for 18 years and have used Starband since then.  I was wondering if any MTs work with satellite and which provider, and if they are satisfied with th ...

Hourly PTO Pay
Jul 17, 2012

I just started with MModal a few months ago and I'm searching for the job offer that states the amount of $$$ we receive per hour in PTO.   Meanwhile, I thought I would come here and ask.  Is it $10 or $12 per hour?   I'm thinking it's one of those.  I could be getting these numbers mixed up with training pay though.  ...

What's An Hourly Rate?
Dec 26, 2009

I am thinking of getting into medical transcription but all I read on here is negative posts about how little work is available and how you are all getting paid less than you were last year.  Now, please don't flame me, I know this is a cheeky question, but to be quite honest ".08 cpl" doesn't mean much to me.  Would anyone mind telling me what they actually earn per hour (when the work is there) and how many hours per day they generally work.  It will just give me an id ...

If VR Were Done At An Hourly Wage,
Dec 30, 2012

would it be a more tolerable thing?  My current job is currently straight transcription but don't know how long that will last.  I know of a job opening with VR at an hourly rate, but have always hated VR in the past.  The contemplated position uses the Mmodal/Docuscribe and looks simpler than the systems I used in the past.  Do you think I should I hang on to what I have, even with a recent reduction in pay, or go for the hourly VR that also has better benefits? ...

Average Hourly Rate
Jun 29, 2011

I'm re-applying to MQ as I desperately need a job.  My question is, are you all able to make at least $10.00 per hour still??  I ask because in searching around, it looks like $10.00 is the best I'm going to be able to do.  I do radiology so I will probably end up doing a lot of editing which I have never done before, so I'm just curious to see if $10.00 is realistic doing both straight typing and/or editing?  Any info appreciated.  Such a shame that its c ...
