Can we use Dish internet? sm - mt2

Posted: Sep 17, 2013

Can we use internet through Dish network. I currently have comcast and I absolutely hate this company. We got rid of our cable through Comcast and went with Dish. We kept the internet but the speed is ridiculously slow. Wondering if I can just go with Dish internet instead. If not, what type of internest connection do some of you use if not Comcast. Thanks for any info!

The last I checked internet thru satellite is OUTRAGEOUS - like $500 just to set up. It also will go out in wind, rain, snow, etc. Ask Comcast to upgrade your speed, for that matter tell them you're leaving and ask for the retention department to see if they have a better bundle package. I just raised h*&% with them and told them I was dropping everything but internet. They gave me a $40 drop in my monthly bill and gave me HBO free for a year. I just have to remember in a year to call and raise some more h*%* when the 1 year bundle is up.

AT&T Uverse rocks! - JustMe

Internet is lightning fast! When I check internet speed I'm faster than the rest of the country! LOL :-)

I have been tempted to switch to AT&T but am - afraid of outages.

Since you like it so well, I take it you don't have a problem with that? I have cable internet which is also extremely fast, but at least once a year for a period of a few weeks, it will go out intermittently, just for a few minutes or so (usually - but sometimes longer). It's super annoying. My sister had AT&T and said it would go out now and then.

No problems - JustMe

Knock on wood, no problems for over a year. There was a modem issue in the beginning but they brought a new one out the very day I called so I consider their support services phenomenal also!

I have ATT U-verse and it goes out several times a day - annoying

Mine will flicker off and on from a few seconds to a few minutes several times a day. Also, twice this year it has gone out for several hours.

Also I find it VERY expensive (after the promo expires). I have actually been thinking of switching. I had Verizon for a year or so before I moved and it never went out.
Flickering internet is probably bad modem - JustMe

It sounds like you're having the same problem I had when I first switched to Uverse. Have you contacted them? I did and they came out that day with a new modem and I've had no problems since (over a year).
They came out and said the modem was fine. - Unhappy with service overall.

It probably depends on where you live.

They came out and said there was no problem with my equipment. So I can only assume it is a problem with their service.

If I weren't a procrastinator extraordinaire, I would have switched providers a looooong time ago.

Dish was awful for me. - Used Hughesnet

I was out in the boonies with the only other option of dial up (not much worse). The speed was slow, it would drop with every storm and was just completely unpredictable. It also cost a fortune to get set up. After almost a year of fighting with it, I actually drove 20 minutes to a friend's who had DSL to work. I have since moved and now have fiber.

Look into upgrading your modem, too - Do not rent the one from Comcast

[ In Reply To ..]
I have Comcast and it's ridiculously fast. In addition to what the poster said below about calling them, look into changing out your modem. No matter how fast your speeds are from the ISP, if the modem isn't very fast it won't do you any good. The modem that Comcast rents out is very basic. VERY basic. I have a higher end Motorola modem that I got at Bestbuy for $200. Remember, it's deductible, and at 8 or 9 a month to rent it, you'll spend the same amount over 2 years.

Air cards are generally better than satellite - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
Of course DSL or cable best choices but if you can't get that, air cards have far shorter LATENCY- the delay when the signal goes to source and then back - than satellite. If you don't the greatest signal for air card you can buy antennas and/or amplifiers.

I have had it with Hughesnet and am going to try Verizon broadband.  I was just wondering if others who use it have any trouble staying under the 5 GB monthly limit.  I really only use my computer for work, work email and a small amount of personal email, paying bills, and facebook.  Very occasionally a you tube video or something like that.  I'm not sure what that all would add up to. ...
