I've made a corporate decision. For myself.
As of 4:00 EST, on May 17, 2012, I will never again apply, or waste 2 unpaid hours of my valuable time testing for ANY company which does not list CPL or hourly pay in their job listing.
I will also be submitting my own "EMPLOYER HANDBOOK" to potential employers, addressing wage transparency, full explanation of pay rates, and precise factors by which "hourly" or "minimum" wage amounts are arrived at.
I have nothing to be afraid of anymore, nothing more to lose. I'm already poor. I've managed to remain in my home this long, and I think I can manage a bit longer until we who are active in the movement are able to reverse some of the damage done to our worth in this industry (partial thanks to AHDI).
Like others who will no longer accept pennies, I'm damned good at what I do, and any company who won't pay me at least close to what I'm worth, can kiss my big behind. I'm not a shill, not a desperate wh&re who will "put out" for pennies, and I refuse to allow them to treat me as such for even one more day.
My knowledge base is vast, my skills are worth decent pay; these clowns don't deserve my expertise for pennies, and they won't get it. I'd rather work at McDonald's where they're at least honest with their employees.
...and these MTSOs will continue to lower pay rates, and they are already losing clients, because MTs/Editors have to focus on speed, not quality, to earn 1/5 of what we earned 8 years ago. They will not tell you in so many words to "compromise quality", but it is strongly implied and silently enforced. But my work ethic is superior to theirs, and I refuse to submit inferior work in someone's mom's medical report, or someone's daughter, son, grandmother, which is what MTs are forced to do in order to earn any pay at all.
In this predominantly female industry, I refuse to accept the disrespectful treatment and despicably low rate of pay as offshore Hindi female "typists". Their culture does not command respect (or equal pay) for females, and their male partners, even their peers, show them very little to no respect.
But that's their problem. Let them beg for pennies to crank out error-riddled reports, ticking malpractice bombs waiting to explode.
...but I won't be begging, and I won't be paid pennies. I will remain unemployed until I am treated with respect and paid a reasonable wage.
