taking timed transcription tests - sm

Don't you just hate transcription tests that are TIMED and you start listening to the audio, and the audio is so bad that you just feel and know that you are going to flunk it?
What do you do, then? Do you continue and count your blessings or do you just exit?

Transcribe every word that you can understand, knowing that anyone else who is taking that same test is having the same problem, if the audio really is that bad. Most will quit. If you have good skills, just keep going. Don't give up. You may do better than you think. It's definitely one way to weed out the people who have no skills at all so they will quit and it won't be necessary to grade their employment test. You would be shocked to see how many applicants apply for MT jobs when they have no MT skills at all. They think all you have to do is listen and type what you hear. One recruiter told me she gets hundreds of those every week. That must be a nightmare to go through and pull out the applicants who really can do the work.

[ In Reply To ..]then log back in to take the timed test with it done already. If you have to use a secondary email address for one log-in, and another for the actual test. There are ways around it if you think about it.

[ In Reply To ..]and the clock starts running. I cannot log in and out and type it in 'word' and then copy/paste back in, when I am out, I am out and there is no audio anymore.
The clock keeps running and when I go out, I am thrown out.
I bet nowadays they even monitor the corrected typos one makes during transcribing.
Maybe this worked in the "old times," but not anymore with the advanced technology. They are "watching" and know exactly what one is doing.
When the time is up, everything shuts down and one sits in front of the blank screen, but they saved what one accomplished during the given time.
Like when taking a timed SAT test.
Also, usually they have their own software, often not word based, not Escription etc... also it demands either USB, the next is serial port, one has always configure the foot pedal to make it work anew, etc.....
But, anyways, thanks...

[ In Reply To ..]I've avoided timed tests for this exact reason. I don't mind timed grammar or spelling tests, but the audio on online transcription tests is sometimes so awful that entire chunks are inaudible.
The 3 timed tests I did take were sent in with flags about inaudibility in them. I never heard back, which isn't surprising.

Why in the heck don't employers give you at least some basic instructions for a transcription test? Some want you to format, others don't. Some want you to edit punctuation, etc., others want you to transcribe verbatim. It's very frustrating because they all seem to want something different, yet most don't bother to give instructions. Applying for a new job is a job in and of itself these days. Is anyone else having this ?? All these tests on these job applications. They are sometimes hours long. Some of these test reports are HARD. They are harder than most I do now. I work for MW now. I don't really have time to go through all these tests for hours and hours for FREE. for MT jobs that were ridiculous as in you basically need to be a doctor to pass, but I took a pretest just to take the coding course and it was ridiculous, as well. I sure felt like emailing them and saying nevermind, I would not consider taking a course that you have to be a doctor just to do coding!! Very frustrating!!!! ...

I got an invitation to test for a transcription company. This company does not do any doctor's notes, but they do other medical type work such as meetings, etc. On their site they have 3 tests and you can do all or as many as you feel comfortable doing. I downloaded one of the tests to check it out and it is almost 30 minutes long. I am ambivilent about taking such a long test with no compensation just for them to decide if I can do the work. What do you people ...
