just wondering what you make per hour, based on a 40-hour week...sm - justme

Posted: Jul 26, 2013

I know none of us get paid by the hour, but I was just wondering if any of you have ever figured out just how much you earn per hour, based on a 40-hour week. I'm just trying to figure out where I fit in. I seem to be earning $16-18/hour give or take based on how my week goes.

I am about the same (nm) - x

About 20 to 22 an hour - Depending on my focus

[ In Reply To ..]
Some days I can knock it out of the park and get around $25-27 an hour but that seems to be few and far between these days. Most of the time, I average around $20-22, 40-hour work week, MTSO not my own accounts and not in-house.

Anywhere from $17 to 22 - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
I can easily hit $20-22 on my primary account, but I have some secondary accounts that I only average $12 per hour, so it really knocks down my pay if I have a lot of their work to do. I also have 3 docs that I can earn $28-30 with, but unfortunately don't get a lot of their work.

Around $10-12 an hour, 95%+ VR at 4.25/7.25 cpl. - nm

My TAKE HOME per paycheck is $10-11 an hour. Hardly a living, so I am going to look into getting my deceased husband's social security now that I am 60

yes, you are just supposed to be doing - your own research
[ In Reply To ..]
READING is a big part of research. Good luck with that (and with getting other people to help you when your attitude needs adjusting).
Look at everyone on their high horse! Her question - was a bit more specific than below.

Look out everyone, here come the post duplication Nazis.
and what donkey did you ride in on? Tthere's no Nazis here - no name calling here. Not necessary. s/m

The way you said that took away from your whole point and now it's about you. Have a nice life.
Neither is the tut-tutting bandwagon necessary just - because some deem the post theme repetitive.

This is not the word help board where you are expected to research a term before asking for help. On this type of issue, I don't see what the big crime was, just trying to gather more data from different people. Even if a similar question has been asked before, once a few days go by, people tend to not contribute any more to a particular thread. I don't understand why 3 different people felt the need to jump down the OP's throat on this.
I took it more as a look before you leap to spare her - some trouble, etc. Just common sense, no biggie.

How does anyone make over 8 dollars an hour!!! Where do you all work!! I made maybe 6 dollars an hour average working at Nuance. Never any work, never was aloud to make up time because "then you're going into other shifts". I never got a break after 2010. Before that I made really good money. Please help with some advise. thank you

What?? Right - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know how anybody is making 20 bucks an hour. Not saying it's not possible, just surprises the crap out of me.

I can rarely make more than 10 on a good day anymore. I keep getting new accounts, the really tough ones, or the EMR accounts where reports are less than 5 lines. It's nice getting more and more accounts so I'm not out of work, but the constant switcheroo keeps my pay low, low, low.

I answered above at $16-18. I work at M*Modal... - x

[ In Reply To ..]
I work for M*Modal at 5 cpl for VR and 9 cpl for straight. I average 200 lines an hour on straight typing accounts. I know those are rare and I'm grateful. I have had NJA, but not often, and lately we've had plenty of work.

Up until 2010, I was actually making $25-30 an hour with VR for a small company I loved (6 cpl, 7 on weekends, great platform with minimal editing, imported demographics, and automatic formatting, no QA or silly BOS 'rules', headers and footers counted, no crazy account specifics, make your minimum lines on your own schedule, 5 weeks paid vacation, 3 paid holidays off). Everyone was happy, we had excellent quality, and the company was successful until...

They lost the account we had known for 20+ years (500 doctors + other dictators) to a bidding offshoring company paying 4 cpl to their US employees and of course less to their Indian counterparts. Doctors fought to keep us and our quality, but you know how it goes. Administration just cares about cheap. The owner told them she refused to cut our pay to 4, but knowing what I do now and the environment of MTSOs regarding working every holiday, punching time clocks, QA, time-consuming unpaid demographics, etc., I think we all would have taken the pay cut. She ended up retiring.

I am $17-22 above. - sm

I have worked for many of the larger MT companies and have never made more than $12/hour at any of them, usually made around $8-10 on an average day. It was frustrating! I, however, kept applying to different companies until I found an account I could succeed with.

I now work at a very small MTSO making 8 cpl as an IC (real IC, work when and how much I like, no line requirements or schedules). For me, it is the account I work on that allows me to make a decent wage, not the company. I do other accounts with this company and am lucky to break $12/hour. My primary account though I have been on for over 5 years and am very familiar with it, often knowing what the docs are going to say before they say it. They are very repetitive. I also only have about 15 docs on my primary account, so I know each one very well and have been able to create customized templates for each one to include their regular phrases and their complete PE and ROS, which typically stay the same. I just have to insert the vitals. I am also paid for everything on the report, which most companies don't pay for, including headers and footers on each page. We also don't use a platform. Everything is transcribed directly in Word, which I prefer. I find most platforms to be very MT unfriendly and they just slow you down. By transcibing in Word, I can use my own templates and macros, which I love.

I did go through about 20 companies though to find one I actually liked. If you aren't making money at your current company, keep looking. There are still some decent MT jobs out there.

a little more on my work situation...sm - justme

[ In Reply To ..]
I work at home as an employee of a large hospital system. It's all straight typing with the help of AutoText and AutoCorrect. I am one of maybe 85 MTs, all one of 3 levels. I am a top-level MT and transcribe any and all reports. I never know who my dictator will be or what kind of report is coming to me. At least half of my dictators are ESL. I've been an MT for about 30 years, starting very young with on-the-job training. I'm paid on production only for the last few years. And, I still LOVE my job!

VR - How Much Can You Make Per Hour? Sm
Oct 13, 2010

Just out of curiosity - figure out what you make per hour doing VR.  I am looking for like $15/hr or whatever.  Then put that into the context of how much you make per hour doing straight transcription.  I don't want your name, your company or anything about you personally.  I am just curious to compare what people make doing VR paid per line translated into how much that is per hour. Thanks for any help. ...

40-hour Week Definition
Nov 09, 2010

I work in the medical transcription industry. My employer is in TN.  We are required to work 40 hours per week, and we are paid on the basis of lines of dictation we transcribe per day.  Many days there is not enough work during a shift (a shift given us by our employer) to complete our 8 hours of work.  This means that in order to comply with company request, we have to work 2 to 3 hours at night to complete our 40 hours, even though we have sat at our desks and continually check ...

I Make $8.50 An Hour With Webmedx/Nuance
Dec 09, 2011

Since we were acquired by the big N, "We" are on the old platform, not Dragon.  I don't get any reports that have templates or normals. The account has thousands of doctors.  This is as much as I can possibly make under these parameters. So running our "salary calculator," it comes out to $8.50 an hour.  I was making twice this 2 years ago for same company before it was acquired. ...

If you complain about this editing stuff you get told just be glad you have a mess or you would not have a job.  I had to retype a 15 minute editing job because the editor decided it was doing an exam for an obstetrics patient and it should have been for a neurosurgery patient.  How many times have you found a uterus in the brain?  I would not advise anyone to apply for their jobs.  You will just get treated like dirt and they do not care if you make any money or not.  ...

Average Per Hour With 0.75 Or 0.375 Versus $12.00 Per Hour
Mar 31, 2014

My transcription job was always paid by the hour. I was laid off and they recently offered me a temp position with them making $12.00 an hour.  I was also offered a positon that pays 7.5 and 3.5 cpl.  The $12.00 is employee status for a small local company I worked for over 9 years.  The other is an IC position.  Do you think I would make more with the $12.00 an hour or the per line production rate?  I have never done production by line work so I'm not sur ...

$10 An Hour

I need to find a job that averages more than $10 an hour. Best Hour EVER

I've been doing MT forEVER.  Today I pushed the envelope as hard as I could and I transcribed 734 lines in one hour.  I was totally "on," dictators were great, and being in the zone helps.  I doubt I will ever replicate it, my hands are still trembly! $3 An Hour
Dec 02, 2010

So I have been working for a few months now but it is so hard to increase my line count. First of all quality comes before quantity, but I also have so many different physicians that it seems impossible to increase my line count. I also have a lot of ESL docs, but I do prefer them over a doc who mumbles. Right now I am making about 3-4 bucks an hour. It stinks. Would you work for that amount?? ...

$15 An Hour.
Feb 13, 2012

I don't know why I picked $15 an hour for this little experiment, but for some reason it strikes me that across the board that's about what a lot of MTs are averaging these days.  Could be a bit more, a bit less, but I had to pick a number. The experiment:  1.  Identify other jobs paying similar rates. 2.  Select some that generally come close to what I might call the "ambience" of MT as it now exists. I think I've found it, and here is where I wish with al ...

By The Hour
Apr 27, 2014

Somebody somewhere got paid big bucks to devise some cockamamie formula for what they think we should achieve, lines per hour, etc, which doesn't work, does it, because every account is different, some weighted heavily toward editing and others toward transcription, some heavy ESL, others not.  There are too many variables to put us all under one roof production-wise.  If they wanted to simplify, why not pay us by the hour with an additonal ...

2-hour, 2-hours?
