May be losing job to "Dragon Speak" - Transcribing Mama

Hi all,

I wanted to share my current situation. For the past 3-4 years the doc I work for (I am an IC but have had an acct with this same physican for many years since I used to work in his office as an employee) has periodically told me and the full-time lady in the office that we may be losing our positions due to cutbacks in transcription. I also transcribe for another family doctor in this same group and probably half of my lines come from him as well. There was an office meeting this week where the other lady was informed in front of the entire staff that the clinic would be going to this Dragon Speak software system soon, the type where the doctor speaks and the computer transcribes. She then passed this info to me as a courtesy. The company told me nothing personally.

Has anyone experienced being replaced as a result of this software? This is a fairly large group of physicians, both ESL and not, so I am just curious how successful this has been for medical transcription. They did not give me a timeframe but I am now looking at my options and considering MT and other fields as well.

I actually have an account from a lady cardiologist that hired me and pays me out of her own salary because she hates Dragon. It does not recognize a lot of her words and actually put in one time that "the patient was a good lay", definitely not what she dictated. I think I would hang in there and see how it works for the practice but that is just my opnion.

I wouldn't worry too much. I worked for a rehab place that used Dragon Speak and it is not very good. Every other word was wrong and it took longer for me to fix the transcription than it would have taken to just type it myself. They spoke excellent English also. Good luck!

They are all trying to cut costs, cut employees. Everyone who is left will have to do the work of at least 3 people.

Too bad everything I am good at and like to do is now being done by machines. I hear they may be even doing away with libraries.

I think it is becoming the norm. Anything to save money. Unfortunately, as we are learning we are expendable. Sad but true. You have my sympathies. I was an IC too and the next week another clinic decided to go with a lower bid. It's a jungle out there. Good Luck!

Lost doct to Dragon Speak - old mt

I missed his income - but not him. He was a JERK! No matter what he had to edit everything to death and didn't pay me for the time. I often wonder how his poor nurse did, because she was the one assigned to edit his Dragon Speak notes - LOL. Sometime Karma pays off.. I'm much better off since losing him.

I lost my job due to the nice point and click system, but was able to keep one doctor within that facility that kept transcribing and then one day there was no work and that is why - she went to Dragon Speak. Apparently they shelled out big bucks for the system that recognizes medical words, etc. and apparently she got the hang of it right away and switched over.

Doctors at local radiology group getting tired of it - and are back ending it now

They use Speech-Q and they were dictating and editing their own reports for a while but now they have tired of it because its too much work so they are now having their in-house people doing the editing. So looks like the new toy has lost its luster.

It all started approximately a month ago with a note from CCM saying she was going on vacation. Not a word from her since then. Letter from corporate saying I had a new CCM. Wrote that person and got a reply that she would like to help me but I wasn't hers! Been well over two weeks since any word from QATL. I was on lockdown, now I'm not. I just put some things together that are enlightening. MQ/Spheris has 12,000 MT's in the U.S., not counting those overseas. Transcend has 5,000 MT's in the U.S. and another 1500 in India. Webmedx has 1200 MT's. KeyStrokes has 600 MT's. TT has 200 MT's. Softscript has 200 MTs. NEMT has 200 MT's. Transolutions, or whatever they are called now, has 300 MT's. Medware, again not sure what their new name is, has 3 ...

How can we edit/transcribe if the volume is highest on the computer, ear phone amplifiers are on, and we STILL CANNOT HEAR! If it comes straight typing and ASR cannot pick it up, why in heaven's earth does the doctor think I CAN HEAR. I cannot! Are these docs being passive aggressive... Oh they don't realize?! I mean seriously this catering to their stupidy is starting to get old. Granted they aren't major errors. But, my theory is if they cannot give me the courtesy of even remotely completing a sentence, much less a paragraph here lately, I am sending it through. I'm trying to get an answer from my CCM regarding foreign doctor's dictation and this 5% QA submission. I type for two separate teaching hospitals and are constantly getting new foreign doctors, 3/4s of which cannot even speak English. I won't matter if I got copies of every single report they dictate, there would be no way not to send these reports to QA....are we getting any kind of special consideration towards our QA submissions for these doctors? They expect us to understand their Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Indian, Filipino, Hispanic accents when they can't even put a simple English sentence together! The hospitalists are the worst. I have recently learned that I will be losing 3 of my best doctors to EMR. Since then, one of the doctors has offered to keep me on entering the clinic notes into the EMR for him. I would still be working from home as an IC, but would need some training on their EMR system. Any suggestions as to what I would charge for this? I currenlty bill by cpl. I hope it is okay. I just need to vent a little. I just got a new job with a very reputable company ( I prefer not to say which one) and yesterday was my first day. I knew I would be on 100% QA. I found out yesterday that I am only allowed to type 3 reports a day until I am off QA. I am so upset. Is it only me or is anyone else losing serious money here? for the past 6 months I have NOT been able to make more than 950 dollars a month take-home. now with the new program my pay is even less.
