MT Pre-Employment Testing Scores - Earlie99

Posted: Apr 23, 2010

Hello All,

I just received the results of my pre-employment testing.  I have not had to "score" on a test in quite some time.  One company asked me if I had been contacted because I scored 50% on the transcription side.  What does that mean?  The other company stated that I did not pass their test.  It was graded by a regional recruiting manager and they are saying that I made several critical errors?  Like what?  Does anyone have any insight to the scoring of these tests?  Both tests were done on the Mt-test website for testing.

what does this mean? This means very bad, sorry - test /sm

they probably wanted to advise you to take further training.

Just to let you know, most MTSOs require - 98% accuracy. 50% is not good. NM

Testing expectations - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Here are some thoughts about what might have happened. They might help you put things into perspective so that you can decide on a plan to fix the problem.

If you are a working MT who does acute care, yet you scored 50%, and you did not note any difficulty with the material, that is an indication that you might be transcribing to different expectations than the service which rejected you. There are a lot of MTs who work in situations where they figured things out on the job their own way, or where they were told to do things a particular way by an employer. The work they do does not necessarily meet national standards for medical writing. As an example, you might be hearing "6-0 Vicryl" and transcribing it as "six oh vicril" because someone told you to do it that way.

Again, if you did not notice that the material was difficult, it might be an indication that you have been mishearing all along and nobody has corrected you. For example, and this is an extreme example just so you can see what might be happening, you might be hearing below-the-knee amputation and transcribing bologna amputation.

You might also have an intrinsic accuracy problem that no one has corrected. As an example of that, you would be transcribing the "bologna amputation" as "baloney amputation."

If you noted that you had difficulty understanding the dictation, yet you typed something anyway without being certain what it was, that might be the problem. This is the "making things up" or "inventive transcription" problem. I know that sounds awful, but it's not meant to be accusatory--it's just kind of what it is.

If the service expected you to follow national standards, and in particular if they expected you to follow the Book of Style, any deviation from it would have been marked wrong. The fact that they said you had critical errors, however, is a good indication that you might have transcribed something completely different from what was dictated.

The suggestion given above to consider formal training or retraining is a good one. If your score is that low, you might have a great deal of difficulty recognizing what is wrong and correcting it on your own. This is particularly true if you completed a course in MT and this is what you learned in it.

The cost of a course is something you will be able to recoup fairly quickly. If you need a national job, then this is something you might consider seriously. Remedial training is not a disgrace if it enables you to continue working.

I would ask the service to tell you specifically WHAT you did wrong. They may be reluctant to do this, but if you show them this post they might be able to tell you where your problems occurred. If they understand that you are asking so you can arrange remedial training, they may tell you.

You might also ask someone like Linda Andrews at Andrews School if she will help you understand what is wrong and what you should do. She has always been generous with explanations, advice, and with helping people sort out their situation. And, no, she never expects you to enroll in her school and will not try to recruit you.

Good luck! I know this is a confusing and probably difficult situation for you, but there is light at the end of every tunnel. You just might need a little help getting close enough to see it.

excellent - advice nm

Pre-employment Testing Sm

Do all the major companies require actual transcription of voice dictation, or do some of them only require on-line skills assessment, i.e., Q&A, multiple choice, etc. I have found that some of these voice files are actually very hard to understand, deliberately done or not, placing the applicant in a disadvantaged position to start. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thx. ...

Fired For Low QA Scores : )
Oct 15, 2009

I am a medical transcriptionist with over 15 years of experience, and I was fired today for low audit scores.  I don't know why I am happy about this.  I guess I am just relieved to get away from a company that picks apart their employees.  What are they going to do when there is no one left?  Ironically, I have worked in many big hospitals and while our reports were reviewed, this would have never happened working in a hospital.  Does anyone know what is happening ...

Just a head's up, new QA scores are being performed (to many of my friends also), with no warning, check your files and you will see a new one just performed.  I have not had a score under 99.5% for 2 years, and had several 100%, but lo and behold, my new score (which will mean NO BONUS for the next QUARTER if I understand correctly) is 98.8%.  Yea, right.  It was done on all my secondary accounts, on the most difficult dictators, and I am looking for a new job.  ...

For Years I Always Had High Audit Scores
Dec 17, 2012

like most of us, a buyout. Loved the company I worked for. Then Nuance took over-changes being made-my scores started going down. Worked hard to get them back up-now I am getting marked for major errors that I KNOW I did not make-I feel 100% confident after all these years I would not be making these kinds of mistakes. Yet, in the last couple of months I have had more errors and some major errors that even a rookie MT would not be making, let a lone an experienced one. No, I am not perfect and n ...

Last week, I had a great QA score.  I only had a couple of reports sent to QC - none of which were problematic. However, today, I had a horrible ESL report with multiple blanks.  I had to send it to QC.  They not only filled in the blanks, but graded me on it -- a whopping 96.2.  UGH!  Is that going to be counted among my post audit score for my pay rate?? ...

The Scores On QC Reports Do Not Mean A Thing. You Can Ignore The Score,

The only thing that matters is the number of these you turn in in the first place. Take what useful correction from those, if there is any at all, and let the rest of it roll off. Do not stress out over these or attempt to reverse a QC score. As a matter of policy, they will never reverse anything on these, because the percentage score on them is meaningless. Only thing that matters is the number of them you turn in to begin with. Cutting down the number you submit is the only way to escape the ...

At-will Employment
Aug 16, 2011

If your employment with an MTSO is "at will," doesn't that apply to BOTH you and them? The legal meaning of "at-will employment" is as follows: "A common-law rule that an employment contract of indefinite duration can be terminated by either the employer or the employee at any time for any reason; also known as terminable at will." So, given this legal rule, why are we deemed ineligible for rehire when we leave an MTSO without what they perceive as fair notice? ...
