Last hired - First fired. I am done with the nationals. - Fingers

Posted: Feb 12, 2010

Lost my job to VR.  I knew it was coming.  When you work on a specialty account that is half templates/normals, and your take home pay is at $3,000 a month - as I have said on here many times, there is no way it will last.  I socked away a lot of cash in anticipation.  When you have been in this business so long, you know people.  I am too old to go back to school and too young to retire.  I am tired of chasing account after account and pimping myself out to the highest bidder.  I am going with a lower paying stable job with a chain of clinics (Doc in the Box, if you will) up and down the east coast, something that I can count on to be there in the future.  They have gone from 1 center 30 years ago to 31 centers and growing.

The pay is only 7.5 cpl but you are not working for an MTSO, they are the client.  They are on EMR already and all that means is they supply you with a computer and your transcription goes straight into the system.  They refuse to use VR.  No more BOS!!!!!  No Physician Database, no copies.  Straight clinic work.  You simply have to use their list of abbreviations.  I do have to work 1 weekend a month doing simple plain x-rays, 1000 lines on Sat and Sun at 12 cpl,  which I am told will take you 2-3-1/2 hours on Sat and Sun only once a month. Oh and get this - if there are system troubles or there is no work - YOU GET PAID an hourly rate for 8 hours.  They only require 1,400 lines (you can get 2000 in less than 8 hours), PTO and holidays, not to mention the other awesome benefits and 401 that they contribute to.  If you DO NOT use their health insurance, they pay you $25 a paycheck.  SWEEEET!!  No set schedule.  You have from midnight until midnight to do your work!!!!   You do not have to do 8 hours unless you want.

This is probably not for everyone - perfect for me!!  No more BOS, no more copies, no more audits, no more sitting at the computer waiting for work and not getting paid, and no more losing accounts to another company or new technology!!  The cut in pay should not be very substantial but hubby is getting SS now, so we can afford it.  I never have to say, "Honey, I lost another account today, no money for a while."  I refuse to even look at any other options at this point because I believe offshoring and VR is taking over everything.  This site/forum has been very valuable to me.   I'm tired of living in fear - so I'm going for it!!!!

new job - great

Great!! Good for you. Believe me, I know too old to go back to school, and can't retire, but there will be no jobs before I can retire, and then will be SOL.

I will not ask the name of the company, but where did you find out about the job? I am in a small town (2200 people) and no possibilty of a job here, so will need at home work.

Me too--How did you find this "dream job." - Sick of nationals 2

Seems like you have hit the perfect scenario and it is similar to doing ER work which is easy. I can think of worst ways to make a living, and we know what that is....working for nationals. How did you come across this job?

That is wonderful! I'm so glad for you. - Backwards Typist

I wish I liked clinic work. Did it for a few years of ENT, and still doing for 1 doc because I have over 15 years invested in him.

I work for a national now. Not crazy about it, but it's a nice company and since I'm near retirement age, I guess I'll stick with it.

It's good to see some MTs are doing better. There IS hope out there for some.

It's local but - Fingers

I am sure lots of MTs have those types of facilities around them. Worth checking into. Again, when you have been around for decades, you know people. A friend of mine is a supervisor there and has been asking me for years to join them. I always wanted the higher pay, and at the time higher pay was available. Not so much anymore. Plus I need job security. If you are lucky enough to find 9 cpl now, will it last? Also, what good is 9 cpl if you are constantly running out of work and not getting paid? I'm tired of all the BS that comes with these companies. When you work for someone who is actually the client and all they want is accurate transcription from a reliable MT and you are appreciated and rewarded fairly, I'm in.

I HAVE JUST LEARNED that I too the last hired, will be the first let go - not due to my fault but to the way the system works here for teachers in Hawaii when funds and student counts go south. Your letter made me happy because I read it as indication that there is a continuing need for mtransciptionists even though their work is changing and evolving. That is pretty much how I've come to see the field. I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU! I laughed and groaned out loud reading your letter. - from a prospective mt

I know what you mean by appreciation - Backwards Typist

My 1 doc used to give me $100 in gift cards every Christimas. A couple years ago, he stopped, but this year he gave me $100 cash and told me how much he appreciated all I do for him. Now THAT's rare.

congrats - would love to hear more about it - looking

Congrats to you for finding something and going for it! My experience is in clinic work (10 years) and I have been job hunting for 4 months now. I have about lost any hope of finding a job. How did you find this job?

You're very smart to do this - MT Bottle

I wish you much luck with your new Job. I agree with everything you're saying. The higher line rate is worthless if you have to jump through hoops to get it. You're an inspiration to many of us. Keep us informed how it's going.

yes, we should all try to find work DIRECTLY - yes

with clients, not through MTSOs or agencies, cutting the middleman out.

We can approach them directly through emails, faxes or even letters, locally.

That would be good if you don't live in the boondocks. - Mary

[ In Reply To ..]
But I do live in the boondocks. Town of 2000 people a Walmart and grocery store, a health clinic, and mom and pop shops. That's it. I have no money to move, husband lost job, unemployment is at 18% here. I have no choice and am panicked because I see fewer and fewer jobs throughout the day. I used to work til 10pm, now all jobs are done by 7 pm. Just very scary time all around.

Right now all I have to look forward to is 12/21/2012.

I live in a small town just like you describe and there are no jobs here. However, there are 3 larger cities around us, each about an hour and a half away. That is where I went. They have centers all over the state and the work is still done by the MTs at home. Take a look in the phone books at the largest city near you.
Oh yeah, one more thing about finding these jobs - Fingers
[ In Reply To ..]
I have found that these jobs are not posted on MT sites. A particular area does not want MTs from all over the country, just in their area. Like I said, many many people have these facilities near them. They will post on the other obvious job sites that everyone checks. Look under these for your city and state. You can also go to their web site and apply directly.

This is certainly not an answer to all MTs, but hopefully worth checking out for some of you.

When These Nationals Offshore To India Or Whereever...sm
Feb 05, 2010

what do they pay the foreign "transcriptionists"? I've been paid 8 cents a line for the past 10 years with never a raise. As my work load has very greatly diminished, I can only assume that the work is going offshore or to new hires at a lesser per line rate. So do the nationals still bill their clients X amount per line and pay offshore or new hires the lesser rate? I am also curious, if anyone wants to share, what the new hire rate per line currently is. It is really sad this is what our ...

Got Fired From The Q - Ha Ha
Feb 24, 2010

Well, I was officially fired yesterday.  Up until last summer, I was one of their top producers, never having an accuracy problem.  The reason I got fired?  I got sick. Early last summer, I let a UTI go for 10 days (lived off Rx strength OTC Pyridium) until I was severely septic and urinating almost pure blood and clots.  I also had a kidney infection, kidney stones and bladder stones.  Thought it was over.  IIRC, the urinary organism was proteus mirabilis.  I ...

Getting Fired
Apr 01, 2010

Isn't it odd that being fired from MQ isn't a disgrace?  Being fired from any other place would be total humiliation, but I don't think anybody here would ever look down on another MT who was let go.  MQ doesn't discriminate.  They justly fire bad MTs, but they also fire good MTs who are stuck with crummy accounts, accounts that constantly have NJA, and probably a ton of reasons that are beyond our control.  ...

Fired
Apr 28, 2010

I was hired by company initials "P" under the conditions that my computer meet their specifications.  I was told my computer met their specification and then offered employment.  I accepted. Their technicians worked on my computer for 2 weeks straight and installed faulty software, and then I was told my system would not meet their specifications and I needed to have my computer XP deleted and reinstalled or buy a new computer.  I had my computer checked out and was told my c ...

Jun 14, 2011

I was fired. I started with Medquist in 1998. They fired me in 1997. I was hired and Spheris and became a Medquist employee after they bought Spheris. I was fired again today. I just hope Medquist eventually stabilizes and the employees are happy again. I hope I find something suitable for me. I wish the best for all. It's been one hell of a bumpy and uneven ride. How To Get Fired
Jun 12, 2013

Has anyone been fired and able to draw unemployment from this ridiculous company? I just can't take it anymore, want to quit, but think if I can somehow draw unemployment that would be great for me. If I do not show up to work will I be let go? I know this seems ridiculous to be asking, but hey, these large do-not-care-a-bit-about-you companies bring out the worst in some of us.  This one is definitely the worse company I have ever worked for, and it shames me to have to work ...

Mar 04, 2015

So I've been going back and forth since the beginning of this "safety pay plan" getting around 99.5% to 100% for 2 weeks then falling off the grid at 98% (and once much lower), back on the grid, back off.  I guess one week I'm an excellent MT and the next I totally suck.  I am just so stressed thinking they are going to fire me.  I am sure it would be a blessing in disguise if they did, but I'm not ready yet. I am my sole source of income and I'd mostly likel ...

Will I Get Hired?
Sep 06, 2010

I have a question for all MedQuist MTs . . . I called them and was told that I qualified and passed MedQuist's test. That was about a week ago. I was told that I am still being "considered" and "reviewed." One recruiter told me that it would just be a matter of time before they could get through all of the paperwork. Another recruiter simply told me my file was still being "reviewed." What does this mean? Does MedQuist always offer jobs to those that pass their testing? Or is it possible t ...

Does Anyone Ever Get Hired....?
May 30, 2012

Does anyone ever get hired from these companies who are continually posting help wanted ads?!?!?  I have applied to at least 15 companies posting ads for help only to sit here waiting for at least 5 weeks, so far, for an answer to any for which I applied!  I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years as well as a QA worker for over 5 years.  My resume is on par with what I consider to be some of the best, yet I never receive an answer to my applications.  I realiz ...

Too Old To Get Hired?

I have not worked since March, but I made so little money that I get way less than 200 dollars a week from unemployment! I have applied everywhere, outside the house and inside. I have attended resume counseling at the career center, nobody is interested in helping me pay for any schooling, they change the s ...

You All Have Been Hired To Put Yourselves Out Of A Job.
Sep 16, 2014

You are helping the devil train the gatekeepers of Hades!  Especially if you are an acquisition employee, you must understand your purpose is to train the front-end voice wreck for the clinic or hospital that sold your soul. Anyone Hired?
Apr 24, 2015

All the ads on the job seeker's board have hundreds and even thousands of responses.  Does anyone ever really get hired?  One of the ads wants someone to start "within the next hour," and that was a few days ago and it now has hundreds of responses.  Why is that ad still even posted?  Only rarely does a company take its ad down or post a message when positions are filled.  Do the other companies just not care?  Can it be that all those hundreds and thousands of ...

Fired For Low QA Scores : )
Oct 15, 2009

I am a medical transcriptionist with over 15 years of experience, and I was fired today for low audit scores.  I don't know why I am happy about this.  I guess I am just relieved to get away from a company that picks apart their employees.  What are they going to do when there is no one left?  Ironically, I have worked in many big hospitals and while our reports were reviewed, this would have never happened working in a hospital.  Does anyone know what is happening ...

FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...
