How do you get hired for radiology when you - MT

have never done it? I have 10 years experience in Acute Care, but no Radiology. Will they hire someone with my experience if I get the training? Can you only get hired if you have experience already? Just want a change. I don't think the place I'm working at now will train me. Also, is Radiology always full-time? Thanks in advance for any information.

I went from acute care to radiology without a hitch! In fact, it's easier. No meds, no lab tests, no surgeries. You likely won't have 200 doctors!

I do want to add that while acute care is important, I'm hoping surgery was included in that. If it was, then you know all your ligaments, muscles, and other internal anatomy.

I don't know how it works with hours and such.

Note that one cannot as easily go from radiology to acute care. Too many procedures, meds, weird infectious diseases, blood borne illnesses, etc., in acute care.

I did want to add that you might want some training/feedback for a short period of time. There are equipment terminology challenges and beam terminology challenges, but a lot of radiology has ready-made templates with all that stuff on it. You mostly would need to know which template to pick.

The rest of the report should be pretty easy since you have 10 years of acute care.

Also, if you're going to work in an imaging center (or otherwise in-house), request hourly rate. Anytime you're in an office, there are other "things" you might have to do. Photocopy, scan, communicate with other staff on this and that, etc. That all takes time away from typing.

it's changing over to 100% doctor-entered electronic records. Some places are still hiring pathology MTs, but that specialty probably isn't long for this world, either.

I was going to mention that, too, but since she hasn't explored it, I figured she'd find out that it's all going down the tubes one way or the other, when she does explore it.

Other than that, OP, we can't be helpful. There is just nothing encouraging to say anymore, and so you are on your own with your decision. DO explore, don't just take these notes in this thread at face value. Read, read, read this forum.

Nuance was recently looking for additional radiology mls's. I would encourage you to apply for a radiology position. There are PT, Progressive PT and FT positions in Radiology. As far as I can tell, there is enough work to go around. I started in Acute Care at a hospital then went into Radiology. Tell them you have "some" experience with Rad but you were primarily acute care. If you've type Ortho reports, you've type a lot of Radiology terms. It's not hard to learn.

Does anyone ever get hired from these companies who are continually posting help wanted ads?!?!? I have applied to at least 15 companies posting ads for help only to sit here waiting for at least 5 weeks, so far, for an answer to any for which I applied! I have been a MT for 30 yrs. I had to stop working 4 yrs ago due to health issues, then finally had 2 surgeries which pretty much took care of the problem. I have two years experience but my experience is not recent. I did not graduate from a school or course, rather, I was trained by an MTE and by someone who had a general practice that they typed for. Eventually I was able to take over the general practice but had to give it up because my husband's health was critical.
