USAjobs.com anybody get hired off there? - sm

Posted: Jun 18, 2014

I applied for 17 jobs that I was rated fully qualified up to 100% qualified and I didn't even get an interview for any single one of them.  I think it's because of my age.  Has anybody over 55 gotten hired off USAjobs?

It is usajobs.GOV, not .com... - Explanation

[ In Reply To ..]
It is usajobs.gov, not .com. There are some scam websites.

You said you were fully qualified, but did the notice say you were referred for consideration?

Not everyone who is qualified is referred for consideration. The office that receives the applications assigns points to your qualifications. All the applicants are then sorted in point order. Only the top are referred to the hiring official. Your age would have little impact to that point.

Depending on the job you applied for, there may be thousands of applicants. Current federal employees will be applying, too. Even though you may be qualified, others may have met those qualifications, yet may be more qualified on top of that. Veterans and displaced federal workers may be cutting in front of you.

If you were not told you were referred for consideration, you didn't get to the cutoff even though you were qualified. That was not because of age.

What did you apply for? I might be able to explain more knowing that. What was the title, series, and grade?

I was interviewed off the website - nana7

I was called and they told me at first that I was too far down on the list and they had to interview vets that were not qualified for the job. I figured there was no way they would call me if I was that far down on the list. Then about 2 weeks later I was called for an interview, then called back for a second interview but did not get the job. So yes they do hire off that site. Basically that is the only site you can apply from I believe.

You're right, it's usajobs.gov, but to get to the point, yes I was referred, all of the jobs. I was applying for 0679 (Medical Support Assistant), 0335 (Computer Assistant (Office Automation)) and a couple of 0318 (Secretary (Office Automation)). The grades ranged from 3 to 7, I was referred on all of them and I have placement priority because I have 13 years prior federal service and I'm a career employee. All of my yearly evaluations were Fully Successful or better and I had several commendations and Sustained Superior Performance Awards. Like I said, though, never even got an interview.

What was your previous grade? - And are you a coder?

[ In Reply To ..]
What was your previous grade? That might have a lot to do with it. If your grade was higher, you would be able to apply for another job and move on quickly, which they might not prefer.

Just to point out, the jobs you listed are often, and I would say preferentially, filled from within with known employees who are advancing in grade.

Also, are you actually a coder? Trying to get in through another job?

No, I am not a coder. I'm a displaced MT with a lot of secretarial and IT background and I was not applying for a coding job, I just knew there was a lot of posting about usajobs on this site. My last GS position was as an office automation assistant and it was a GS4, step 10. I was a military spouse and I had to take a downgrade from a GS6 position as a secretary/admin assistant when my husband got orders, then quit civil service when I couldn't get a permanent position because of a hiring freeze on the Base. My grades have been GS4-GS6 in the secretarial series, GS4 as an office automation assistant. Of note, one job I was REFERRED for as an office automation assistant was a GS7 and that was at the base (where they give an actual numerical rating, the VA just gives EL/not EL) and my eligibility rating was 100% - and that was one job that was canceled and reposted later. Those jobs I applied for at the VA had already been through the VA posting. They post in-house first, then open to all for Federal Service, etc, and then open to all US Citizens. At the beginning of all these jobs it says you have to have at least 1 year time in grade to advance, so that would not have been an issue. I had several years in each of those series and I would have had to stay at the grade I went in at for at least a year if they had hired me.
They do not always post in-house first. - sm

They do not always post in-house first, etc. It depends on whether they think they can fill it without opening it to a wider group.

Let me clarify please - sm

I was asking if anybody actually got hired off the usajobs web site because I am filing a congressional complaint and request for inquiry into the hiring practices of the government because I was not even contacted. I know that is the only place you can even apply for a federal job. I actually applied for something like 30 jobs that I was rated eligible and referred but then the job was cancelled and some were reposted later. My next door neighbor is 57, will be 58 shortly, and he applied for a gardener position, he has all these certifications that they wanted and he applied for 2 of the jobs and he hasn't been contacted or even referred and the jobs closed a month ago. He isn't a vet and has no prior federal service. I knew a lot of people had posted about usajobs for coding and I was just curious if anybody over 55 had ever gotten hired.

Two thoughts - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Jobs are often cancelled and reposted for reasons unrelated to the applicants. Technical errors in the announcement, for instance, or not getting a large enough pool of applicants, or the hiring official moving to a different job, or funding issues.

Errors on applications can result in disqualification and possibly no contact. The online application is difficult to fill out and requires some degree of computer skill, the ability to read directions, and to communicate in writing.

Also keep in mind that there are a lot of Veterans applying for jobs right now. They get preference.

If you applied for a coding job, keep in mind that no matter what experience you have from the private sector, it is not going to be the equivalent of VA experience. They code like everybody else but also deal with a huge amount of VA-specific coding and other factors at the same time. Being considered fully qualified means you meet the regulatory requirements for education, etc., not necessarily the details of the job that was announced. If there are VA coders looking at that job, they will move ahead of you just because of that.

Filing a congressional complaint is always a possibility. If you do, do not expect it to result in a job at the facility you complained about, though. If the facility is local to you, a better plan might be to get to know the coding supervisor and chief of HIMS.

On the contrary, according to http://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=Group-Standards (see below for excerpt) experience is experience. If you hold a position for a year, it is 1 year of experience, period. And that is documentable by position description. In my particular case, I had Civil Service documentation of at least 1 year in each grade and series that gave me the eligibility ratings. If you hit the OPM web site above it gives instructions and examples on non-federal service ratings.

Clerical and Administrative Support Positions
This qualification standard covers positions in the General Schedule that involve the performance of one-grade interval clerical and administrative support work. It contains common patterns of creditable experience and education to be used in making qualifications determinations.

A list of the occupational series covered by this standard is provided below.

This standard may also be used for one-grade interval positions other than those listed if the education and experience pattern is determined to be appropriate.

Not exactly - sm

If you read the post again, note that it began with a caveat about applying for a coding position. Are you applying for a coding position? No. Does that post apply to you? Not entirely, no.

Meeting the time in grade, education, and experience may qualify you for the position, but does not mean you are the most qualified candidate. If I need a secretary who can do credentialing and handle spreadsheets, and there is someone who can do that when you cannot, I can select them.

I'm the OP - sm

I'm the original poster, and the only reason I posted on the coding board was because I had seen several postings on this board about the usajobs web site and was curious as to whether or not anybody over 55 had gotten hired. After 13 years working civil service and 19 years and 1 month being an officer's wife (yes, he screwed the pooch on this one), I am fully aware of how everything can be manipulated so you can put whoever you want whereever you want. But I was also the beneficiary of someone else's congressional complaint and class action suit in the mid 80's that gave many of us a great deal more money than we would have had if she had just shut up and let it go. I wish you better luck when you are over 55, just don't lose that managerial position you have now.

Will I Get Hired?
Sep 06, 2010

I have a question for all MedQuist MTs . . . I called them and was told that I qualified and passed MedQuist's test. That was about a week ago. I was told that I am still being "considered" and "reviewed." One recruiter told me that it would just be a matter of time before they could get through all of the paperwork. Another recruiter simply told me my file was still being "reviewed." What does this mean? Does MedQuist always offer jobs to those that pass their testing? Or is it possible t ...

I am told that I just got hired by Nuance.  Am interested in what people have to say about the company.  I have read that the first part of this month, they were running out of work.  If so, do they really need me? Also, am interested in insurance costs?  Some straight answers would be most appreciated. Thanks, Charlie ...

Does Anyone Ever Get Hired....?
May 30, 2012

Does anyone ever get hired from these companies who are continually posting help wanted ads?!?!?  I have applied to at least 15 companies posting ads for help only to sit here waiting for at least 5 weeks, so far, for an answer to any for which I applied!  I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years as well as a QA worker for over 5 years.  My resume is on par with what I consider to be some of the best, yet I never receive an answer to my applications.  I realiz ...

Too Old To Get Hired?

Should I stop saying I have 31 years of experience as a transcriptionist? I try not to date myself by putting dates on my resume, like when I graduated. I am 61 and will be 62 next June. I have attended resume counseling at the career center, nobody is interested in helping me pay for any schooling, they change the s ...

Anyone Hired?
Apr 24, 2015

All the ads on the job seeker's board have hundreds and even thousands of responses.  Does anyone ever really get hired?  One of the ads wants someone to start "within the next hour," and that was a few days ago and it now has hundreds of responses.  Why is that ad still even posted?  Only rarely does a company take its ad down or post a message when positions are filled.  Do the other companies just not care?  Can it be that all those hundreds and thousands of ...

Newly Hired MT
Aug 31, 2010

Hello, I am new to the forum and recently hired as an at-home MT. It has been a year since I completed college MT courses at a tech center. The employer, saw my resume online. I have a p/t job that I've had for 2 years in addition to the MT job. Both jobs, are flex in hours, although the MT employer would like full-time. It pays 8 cents for every 60 characters. I would really love to drop the p/t job because it miserable in many ways. Can someone break the pay down in other terms? W ...

How Much MT Experience Is Too Much To Get You Hired?
Nov 15, 2011

I spent last week typing test dictations for transcription jobs. After typing five tests today for one company and then 3 more for another company I am wondering why I haven't been called back on any of these jobs. I have heard of having too little experience, but is there such a thing has having too much experience that a company is afraid to hire you because they think you will demand to be paid too much. Even though I have 10+ years experience I am willing to take 7 cpl just so that I c ...

Why Didn't I Get Hired?
Aug 27, 2012

I have been a MT for 30 yrs. I had to stop working 4 yrs ago due to health issues, then finally had 2 surgeries which pretty much took care of the problem. While I was out on disability I got a grant, went back to an AHDI approved University and took refresher courses in MT fulltime for a year. Now, I'm ready to get back to work. I submitted a resume to M-Modal last week and just read they are not considering me. Is there a way to find out why? I'm a good transcriptionist and I want to ...

What Are My Chances Of Getting Hired Anywhere
