Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always if that holiday falls on our regular work day. And it's not like I can ask off for the holidays yet even if I use up all my PTO and/or unpaid leave b/c it's too early to ask off and the MTs who have kids get first choice anyway. I have a family and traditions and plans too. My family members work retail and have those holidays off and I don't. They can't take a Tuesday off to celebrate the holiday later b/c retail is **** between Black Friday and New Years, so it sucks all around for us as it is. Then you add in the fact that MTs don't make squat to begin with to even shop and stimulate "the economy."
It's bad enough we have to work holidays, but now this? Even McDonalds and Wal-Mart are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Doctors are off, clinics are closed, pharmacies are closed, even ERs are not busy until the day after....geez!
I don't care if I sound like I'm complaining, I'm just **** that I got this email today on top of NJA and no OT to make it up. *****
But then thought about it, that as an IC I didn't get holiday pay either and still had to work (if there was work), plus no health insurance and less pay per line than I'm getting now. I was looking forward to getting 1.5 time on holidays, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. It still sucks though!
