Crappy holidays to us all - NoMoreMT4Me

Posted: Sep 30, 2010

Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always if that holiday falls on our regular work day. And it's not like I can ask off for the holidays yet even if I use up all my PTO and/or unpaid leave b/c it's too early to ask off and the MTs who have kids get first choice anyway. I have a family and traditions and plans too. My family members work retail and have those holidays off and I don't. They can't take a Tuesday off to celebrate the holiday later b/c retail is **** between Black Friday and New Years, so it sucks all around for us as it is. Then you add in the fact that MTs don't make squat to begin with to even shop and stimulate "the economy."

It's bad enough we have to work holidays, but now this? Even McDonalds and Wal-Mart are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Doctors are off, clinics are closed, pharmacies are closed, even ERs are not busy until the day after....geez!

I don't care if I sound like I'm complaining, I'm just **** that I got this email today on top of NJA and no OT to make it up. *****

Recession over? Not a chance!!! - typetypetypeaway

The government would love for you to believe that it has been over since 2009. I would like to know what book they are reading...cause everything still points to recession. It has never been over as far as I am concerned. And now I am on unemployment since April and my husband has been on unemployment since 2008 now. He took early retirement. Recession over...don't think so despite what they say. Good luck to you.

Right... it aint over. I had to take a pay cut... so - I understand

[ In Reply To ..]
it does not matter if my work is flawless, that I am loyal and dedicated -I still have a cut in pay with my 10 years of experience. It feels so defeating, but with so many out of a job, I deal with it. My husband is on unemployment. Good luck to EVERYONE out there trying to get by.

No holiday pay - Roma

So what would happen if you do not work the holiday?

I never worked holidays at the hospital or doctor's offices I did transcription for. Or the service that I worked for, but it was not a big national one.

More and more I guess I am thinking I am glad that my resumes go to the twilight zone it seems.

Do not blame you for ranting about this one.

Yeah, the Recession is "over", and now it's a - full-on DEPRESSION.

[ In Reply To ..]

"Over", my @$$.

I expect another downturn and Depression, not Recession - Just My Opinion

[ In Reply To ..]
I also expect that prices on everything will go sky high and many banks and other businesses will go under. I totally expect that to happen.

There will be no end to the downturn and it will get worse until there are more jobs, and...there are no jobs in any industry these days.

You must be reading my mind----armegeddon - oldgraydog

You're right--the recession is NOT over--not even close! We have to remember this is coming from the media--and they love Obama and anything Leftist, so will do all they can to make him look good.

I HEAR YA! SCROOGE WILL BE HERE THIS YEAR! - oaf

[ In Reply To ..]
The recession is far from over! I'm not even getting the X-mas decorations down. bAH hUMBUG! If they aren't compensating you for the holidays - just refuse to work them. When you agreed to work their schedule you were promised that there would we be a little incentive($$$). Start looking elsewhere - that is just crappy to do just before the holiday season to employees.

I think everyone is really not looking forward to the holidays this year, whether they work or not. I personally could do without them entirely and I am off most of the time. Perhaps you could arrange for another day to have your dinner/gift exchange instead of the actual day. If you don't have small children or a huge family with parties, etc., just flex a little. When my kids got a little bit older, we would have an after Christmas shopping spree and take advantage of sales and such and had a blast. We had some presents on Christmas day, but celebrated more afterwards. Now they are adults and we still do the same thing. It is together time and after all that is what the holidays are supposed to be about. I have a son who works all holidays, birthdays, etc., and I know it is a pain, but the way things are, I think we all need to relax and not stress about what we think is expected of us.

Good ideas... - NoMoreMT4Me

Fortunately, I only have 8 people to buy for instead of 20+. We rotate houses every Christmas b/c that saves people on traveling expenses. We also each bring a dish to pass or a dessert or a bottle of wine, something cheap. We also pick names and only have 1 person to buy for and keep the limit under $50. It works out nice. Everyone is included and can contribute but no one has to deal with extra money they do not have. We also celebrate the holidays with texts and emails and phone calls and inexpensive cards during the actual days, but get together in January for Christmas after the rush dies down and we can make a weekend of it. That makes me feel better.

I'm still upset by the fact that whether I work the holiday or not, it will not be worth my time anyway b/c it seems my options are work all day with NJA and make no $, take the day off w/o pay and make no $, or switch days and still get stuck with NJA and make no $. I'm not using my piddly PTO for a whole day off when I can use it when I'm really sick or something.

Just my 2 cents (per line) LOL

I don't think that's legal - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
If you work on a national holiday they have to pay you time-and-a-half. I would check it out for sure, but I have worked in mgmt before and you can't just not pay people OT on a national holiday. There are some that aren't "recognized" by my current company, but the big 7 are paid OT.

There is no federal or state regulation on holiday pay. LOL - Overtime? Different story. nm

Overtime - Overworked

[ In Reply To ..]
They can even get around OT pay. My husband works for a very large trucking company and unless you work over 60 hours a week, they get around the OT pay.

no need to LOL - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
I am just going by what I have been told. So I'll think of you and LOL this Thanksgiving & Christmas while I am working on one holiday & making time-and-a-half (or CPL-and-a-half) and relaxing on the other holiday having the day off and getting paid for it. Have a nice day.

Not trying to take away ur happy b/c I'm really glad u have that perk still, but I'm sure u will be in the same boat when ur MTSO cuts out holiday pay and then you'll be just like the rest of us sorry MTs.

I don't work for an MTSO.

I just got the same email - I was upset at first

[ In Reply To ..]

But then thought about it, that as an IC I didn't get holiday pay either and still had to work (if there was work), plus no health insurance and less pay per line than I'm getting now.  I was looking forward to getting 1.5 time on holidays, but it's not a dealbreaker for me.  It still sucks though!

Thanks all for letting me rant... - NoMoreMT4Me

[ In Reply To ..]
And setting me straight about the recession. I was mistaken. I know I'm still hurting as well by it. I just was upset by "the economy" as their answer.

As far as not working the holiday, their policy is 3 days no-call, no-show, no-answer is assumed quitting. Can't afford that. Can't afford to quit. Can't afford to be fired and collect unemployment either. Wouldn't want to. It sucks also b/c my QA is excellent, my work is excellent, my attendance is excellent, all this I've been told and I still put up with it. At least we all work at home and can scream and yell and complain and come on here to get it all out w/o getting caught by the boss. :-)

I guess I just need to vent, like alot of us are doing right now! I feel for each and every one of us MTs no matter their age or years into it or how "good" they have it. It's BS all around.

But you bet your sweet A that I'm looking at every job out there not MT and trying to get out ASAP. It's not even about the holiday pay, it's the principle.

The recession is still here, I agree, but in my small town in WI, everyone I know is spending money like they're all gonna die tomorrow so it can't be all that bad. As for me, yes, I had to cash in my change jar just to pay for a badly needed haircut that's only $20.

Gotta have good hair for working the holidays ya know. LOL

Going backwards - Fed up

[ In Reply To ..]
It seems like people at other jobs get at least cost of living raises and are moving forward in their jobs but I feel like I have been moving backwards for the last several years as an MT. I also work for the company who sent the email about not being paid time-and-a-half for holidays. I am to the point where I will be seriously looking to change jobs.

2 years after starting to work for a national, I told - my family to do whatever they like - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
for the holidays, but to count me out. Whenever anyone aske me why, I just tell them, "I'm an MT. MTs can't afford to celebrate holidays."

No Holiday Pay - sorryimanmtrightnow

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, I work for that same company and that bad news keeps trickling down. I wonder if their office workers also have to work holidays with no 1-1/2 time? I bet you they don't.

I work there too - tiredoftyping

[ In Reply To ..]
and I ranted and raved to my whole family so feel free to rant...we can't say anything to the company or our jobs will "disappear" so you may as well do it here where you are understood!

It seems like... - earlymusicus

[ In Reply To ..]
the whole aim of the American workplace is to go back to legalized slavery, with everyone working for free. Companies keep going further afield to find cheaper and cheaper labor, but they don't seem to realize a very important thing: the Earth is round, and eventually they will end up right back where they started. Outsourcing (or offshoring, or whatever the correct term is) should be illegal, IMO - especially when the corporation is getting all kinds of perks and goodies from the U.S. government. Sending jobs overseas does not make a strong country.

On a positive note, at least you can work it at home - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I just to work for a local hospital (not transcription), and we were required to work half of the holidays. Including 3/6 Thanksgiving day, day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day. There was no extra pay for this. It was mandatory. There are good things and bad things about work for a hospital, and the bad being that they are open 24/7, and someone has to cover. It actually can be quite busy in the hospitals around this time. It stinks for the employees, but at least on a positive note for the transcriptionists, the hours can be worked the hours from home.
