I am not working any more holidays! - Epiphany!

Posted: Oct 23, 2010

Got denied for Thanksgiving request.  I have put my life on hold for this company for 15 years.  I have missed Christmases, Thanksgivings, family functions and fireworks and for what? To sit at my desk and wait for the work to trickle in? Or no jobs at all.

I am not working another single holiday for this company. Let the Indians work them. I am not even sending in a request for them; I am just going on with my plans. What are they gonna do, send my work to India? Fire me? Please, bring it.  I am so sick of the Q.

Just had to get that off my chest.  The only reason I am still here is for the insurance.

I agree. Let the Indians work OUR holidays since they don't celebrate them.

I asked for 2 hour off and got denied. You can bet your boss isn't working ANY holidays!

A really sore subject - SM

We actually got threatening, sarcastic emails from one of my former CCMs. Then the day before the holiday we got a sickening sweet email wishing us all a great holiday. That's what I call adding insult to injury. MQ suits need to spend their day sitting in front of a computer waiting for work to come in instead of enjoying the holiday with family. This is one of the main reasons I quit; that and 50 other reasons.

There are probably many issues involved with your decision not to work holidays. If you had an on site job that required you to work weekends and holidays, would you refuse to do it? Like it nor not, that's the reality for many of us in health care regardless of seniority. We do it because our employers ask us to. Unlike you, I don't want to have my employment terminated. I've never had a job where I chose when I would and would not work. What the boss does in regard to holidays is not your concern, you can only be responsible for yourself. Sorry, but that attitude needs to be checked at the door.

you can't compare at-home MT with working in a clinic - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Most specialists or PCPs are closed on holidays, so clinic workers there won't be required to go in. Hospitals of course require employees on holidays, but they have work, and they are paid a compensatory rate for working holidays and weekends. I can't recall ever running into a hospital that wanted their on-site MTs working holidays, too. They usually want as few people as possible so they don't have to pay holiday wages to a lot of employees.

It's really not comparable. Who are you referring to with the "us in health care" comment, anyway? Do you work for Medquist AND in a hospital or something?

What attitude? And what door? The door that requires us to show up on schedule but does not have to make sure we have work? The door that cut our pay 40%? The door that allows part of the company to celebrate religious holidays by not working but does not show us the same respect? If I had a job that seriously affected someones healthcare I might, might agree.

I am also tired of missing all the special family times, in return for a paycheck that does not cover the bills and the annual token of appreciation is a mouse pad, to rub in the fact I can't get away from using the frickin mouse anymore.

I would love to check my attitude at the door. The other side of the door. The best news I have heard on here in a long time is I make so little maybe I can go to Community College with the State paying because my income is low, and get out of this thankless, thankless company.
You go girl!!! I totally agree. I have worked in - anonymous

fairly sizeable hospital (350+ beds). We closed on Christmas and had 1 person (volunteer and handsomely compensated) to carry a pager if there was truly an emergency. This is ridiculous. I "had" to work last Christmas. Screwed up my entire family day and I never got a single job.

No I don't work for Medquist, didn't know I needed to in order to have an opinion. I work on site and work every Saturday and still manage family time. When I worked at a hospital we worked holidays, they didn't close on Christmas. We also took evening call during the week and had to go in to transcribe stat reports. I missed a few family gatherings but refusing to work never crossed my mind. We always had work to do so that certainly would make a difference. I don't know all the circumstances, of course, it just surprises me that people seem to think they can tell their employers when they will and will not work. When I said "those of us in health care," I meant nurses, lab techs, pharmacy techs, the entire spectum. Having medical reports completed on time is just as important as anything else. I'm sorry you are not being treated fairly and I'm glad you have the opportunity to go back to school.

The door - SM

What door are you referring to? Perhaps it's the one that slams the MT in the rear every time you start to get ahead. Perhaps it's the one you hear when your relatives arrive for dinner on yet another national holiday, while you sit staring at the screen waiting for a job to come in. Perhaps it's the one that closes in your face with each dropping pay check when you wish to God you could keep afloat after working your brains out and trying to adapt to each and every change and scheme created by MQ. Nobody should miss every important holiday. Nobody should have to fight tooth and nail to spend some time with friends and family like everyone we know. How many people do you know personally who get NO paid holidays off?? How many people do you know who have to use PTO if there is any left after using it for making up hours to have a national holiday off? You have forgotten what living in the real world is like.

What you are describing is not the real world; not every employer treats their employees as badly as you say your are treated by MQ. You are right, though, nobody deserves that. Yet you choose to stay and continue to tolerate it. The only one who can change your situation is you.

Did you get the e-mail requesting you to work for the Indian holiday coming up? They want us to work extra to cover their holidays, why aren't they working extra to cover ours? MQ gets more ridiculous every day.

Working Holidays As An Employee (sm)
Oct 05, 2010

I have never been "required" to work holidays as a SE or IC, so I am wondering how the work loads are when you are an employee.  I was recently offered a PT job as an employee, but I was told if I was scheduled to work, I would have to work.  Well this year would have been both Thanksgiving and Christmas, which would really put a damper on my family gatherings.  Checking in every few hours would not be a problem, but actually missing Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's would be d ...

Hypocracy Of MTs Working On Holidays
Jan 02, 2012

Dictator apologized to the family for not spending more time with them when they found out a young loved one had terminal cancer. 12/24 visit. I seriously had to get up and walk around and cry before I could finish the report. My best friend was diagnosed with the same disease before Thanksgiving last year. Her demise was inevitable, but what was left of her quality of life was compromised by the lack of health care personnel, including her PCP, during to the holidays. I find it ironic that ...

Question About Working Holidays...
May 28, 2012

If you run out of work for over 15 minutes, you're supposed to fill out a ticket & take the rest of the day off, without even checking to see if work comes in later?  Won't they be mad that you didn't check back since it's a holiday?  But then on the other hand, if they've made you clock out & take PTO instead, then I guess you couldn't check back even if you wanted to...?  I don't really understand the point in making everyone work holid ...

Why Do They Always Do This Right Before The Holidays?
Nov 24, 2009

Just got word from the hospital where my full-time coding job is that we will be laying off and/or terminating employees, eliminating positions and changing others.  Why, oh why, do companies always do this around the holiday time? It gets more and more sad and more frightening daily, doesn't it, seeing more and more good people out of work and such a lack of prospects for employment.   ...

Crappy Holidays To Us All
Sep 30, 2010

Just got the email today that effective 10/01/2010, my MTSO (whom I will not name) will no longer be paying holiday pay (aka 1.5 cpl) for any holidays anymore b/c of "the economy." R U *** kidding me? First of all, I thought that the recession was officially over in 2009, but I could be mistaken. Secondly, I know holiday pay and OT and all that is a "perk" and not required by law to pay us, but yet they expect us MTs, er me, to work all major holidays for the same crappy cpl as always ...

Never Got So Much As A Happy Holidays From The Q.
Jan 06, 2011

I don't need some gift (that wasn't worth the money they paid postage on). It just would have been nice to at least send out a company email wishing us a happy holidays. That would have only cost them the money it would have taken some salaried person to type it up and sned it out which is really nothing as that person would have been paid whether they did that or not. Guess 'cause we're an Indian company and that is not one of their holidays. What would have been appreci ...

Happy Holidays Everybody!
Dec 19, 2012

Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to everybody and hope they have a great time and a great holiday! This was our first time decorating and shopping as well as sending cards and stuff in over 7 years due to severe pain and financial issues. It feels so good to do normal things during the holiday this year, although it took numerous doctors appointments to do so. I felt so good when my cousin emailed me that my grandma was searching her mailbox everyday and nobody had sent a card yet, but me... s ...
