Most employers don't ring people's doorbells and ask them if they want a job. Anyone looking for work needs to initiate the contact. Even if jobs were a dime a dozen, someone would have to know where they were to apply, and calling prospective employers was the way to find out besides reading the want ads or showing up in person. I got my first MT job by cold calling a service listed in the yellow pages, and my current one by sending a resume to a craiglist posting. No dimes, same process.
