There's a reason for this. When words fail, people (particularly children/teens) resort to drastic measures. Sorry to bust all your bubbles that these are just spoiled kids, but something has been going on in their lives for a long period of time, and as sure as I'm sitting here, they've tried to verbally express their pain/anger, to no avail.

How many kids' lives are turned upside down by constant fighting in the household, divorce, remarriage, new troubled step siblings, on and on? And you expect them to behave? Seriously?

Perhaps you can stop their destructive behavior, but it's going to turn inwards. You're not fixing the problem by squelching the behavior. In other words, you're not fixing the problem, you're controlling the symptom. This is going to bust out somewhere: Alcohol/drug abuse, self-harm, suicide attempts, etc.
