If someone is feeling suicidal or wanting to hurt oneself because of something "piddly" (to use your term), then does this not ring a bell that they had already been experiencing some sort of intense emotional pain? Are you seriously that cold? The emotional pain is so bad, that a physical cut actually makes them feel better inside.

Gosh, woman. I hope these children aren't yours, please tell me no. If they are, no wonder they're a mess. I hope they have some other adult in their life they can turn to.
