I agree that it's a cry for help and deserves compassion. I also agree that we need to help our children deal with these things better.

To be clear, the OPs method of "teaching" is NOT the message we want to use to help them deal with things. Her attitude is exactly why some kids can't deal with things. It's rejection by a parent which doesn't leave much room inside for handling rejections of any other sort.
