You're absolutely right. It is critical to have a backup plan (and even a backup to the backup). Things can change in a heartbeat, so having options makes all the difference.

It is hard to understand the "It's not my fault, there aren't any jobs here" mindset. If there is no way to make a living where you are, why are you there?

When it becomes obvious that one's means of earning a livelihood is circling the drain, it is irresponsible just to drift along with no backup plan.

If there are no jobs where you are, it is probably time to look into where the jobs are, what those jobs are, and what training is needed to get those jobs.

Just staying in place because that's all you know is not going to work. No one owes anyone a living just for existing. The jobs are not going to come to you; you're going to have to go where the jobs are.

(ETA: "You" is intended in the general sense and for the OP, not for the poster to whom this is a reply as that poster does have a backup!
