There are legitimate reasons for paying by VBC, just as there are legitimate reaons for using a character-count rather than a gross line. The fact some MTSOs are unscrupulous and just looking for a way to cut pay without saying they are cutting pay is no reason to tar all MTSOs, any more than the fact some MTs pad lines, cherry pick, etc. is no reason to tar all MTs. The unscrupulous are always with us, though, so it makes sense to protect yourself from them whichever side of the table you are on.
