proper way to type smoking history - Kay

What is the proper way to transcribe: "... a 25 to 30-pack-year history of smoking..."

Can someone please provide a reference in the BOS (3rd edition). Thanks!!

You need a suspended hyphen - JS

In this case, they are leaving out the "pack-year" following the number 25, so a suspended hyphen is needed.

... a 25- to 30-pack-year history of smoking...

I can't reference the BOS because I don't even know where mine is, but you can do a quick net search for suspended hyphen or hanging hyphen for reference.
