Transcender wondering about webclock - shouldeyebail

Posted: Mar 13, 2012

I am wondering about the webclock I heard Nuance uses.  Are they crazy strict about sticking to your shift and clocking out for everything?  I like the flexibility Transcend offers with regard to family stuff.  If I have to go pick up my kid or go to the school or doctor, they are cool with it and let me flex.  We can also flex when work is low.  Is that going to go away?  Wondering if I should even stick out the next couple of weeks or say screw it and enjoy the rest of spring break.

I think it depends on your account and your manager. At WMX I had a 12-hour window and I have been fortunate to keep that with the transition. They do track your productivity within the platform and hold you to only taking two 15-minute breaks each day. If you aren't productive for the rest of your 8 hours a day they will contact you about it.

Another thing is that they have been pushing OT like crazy lately. My manager started this policy that you were required to do 5 extra jobs at the end of your shift every day and at least 10 jobs on your days off. You had to email him at the end of your shift and email him again after you had completed 5 more jobs or he would be "contacting you."

yor're kidding me. - sm

first a question: If you have a 12 hour window, how is it that you only have two 15 minute breaks? Does not seem to compute.

But if Nuance is going to "require" we do extra work and expect us to work our days off, I WILL be looking for another job. Encourage me to work extra, entice me with rewards, beg me, but don't ORDER me to work. That would make for irreconcilable differences.

You are only allowed to take two 15-minute breaks each day ON THE CLOCK. If you have periods of not being productive for longer than that, you will be contacted. They have some sort of big brother monitoring software that knows when you are actively working or not.
thanks - sm

Oh I see. That is way different than the Transcend clock system. We put no breaks on the clock, just actual time worked, hence my confusion. Thanks for explaining.
Oh this really does not work for MTs with little kids or who have bad legs! - Two 15-minute breaks?
[ In Reply To ..]
I am used to working off and on for 10 hours, so I guess what you guys are talking about is being glued to the desk. My kids are grown, but after a blood clot in the leg my doc said I need to get up every 2 hours and walk around for a minute or two. Wondering how that is going to work now!!
occasional stretch breaks - anon

I had similar issues and they were fine with it so long as it wasn't over 10 minutes. I would set a timer for 2 hours then stretch for 5-10 and that was fine. I was with Wmx. I think part of it is up to your supervisor and they don't want it abused (taking 15 minutes to half hour) but they were very willing to work with me.
what is the big deal if you want to take a half hour? - see message

For years its been standard in the workfore that people get a 15 min break and a half hour lunch break for an 8hr shift. Some places allow you two 15 min breaks and a half hour.

This doesn't sound to good and makes me question the whole ergonomic thing with them. You are suppose to look away from your computer every so often and it recommended that anyone working on a computer and typing for 8 straight hours take short frequent breaks.

I worked in a hospital almost ten years and when we were in-house before everyone went home to type, they would come around ever so often to make sure that people's work stations were set up ergonomically correct, reminding us of the importance of looking away from the screen ever so often, and the importance of taking our breaks.

Dont get me wrong, I dont take a lot of breaks but when my body feels like it needs one, I get up and walk away for about 10 minutes and I try to take my half hour every day and can't imagine being told its not an option.
I've always done this and - will continue to

I work 2 hours, take a 15-minute break, work another 2 hours, take my half-hour lunch, work 2 hours, take a 15-minute break, work 2 hours... done with shift. I need to get up and stretch and walk around, go outside and get some fresh air, whatever or I start cramping up and getting uncomfortable.

I hope they don't get too demanding and obnoxious because we're pretty flexible with them when work is low, especially around the holidays, so I would expect the same respect. However, I do understand there are MTs who just do not stick to their schedules to save their lives. It takes discipline, that's for sure!
Yeah the two 15 min breaks per hr shift is a bit - much.
[ In Reply To ..]
not a biggie for some, but I am a person who has to have a lunch break.
Well, in my experience so far, it should work for you. I haven't seen - it get to the point where I am

contacted to explain myself. Although I've never seen anyone come here and claim to make good money with Nuance, many have reported being treated well, with a number specifically citing a lack of the sort of harassment they experienced elsewhere.

Whatever you do, though, I certainly wouldn't mention my little clot problem. (!) I'd just do my 10-hour thing as usual, of course beginning my shift on time and working up a good satisfactory line count, but otherwise just making sure I was at the keyboard as much as possible when work's piling up or getting behind. In other words, make it work for them too.
Check with HR - sm

There have been multiple responses regarding breaks, entitlements, requirements, etc. The key in the various responses is that if we step away from the system while we're on the clock, our overall production averages are impacted. If we step away and clock out, no impact other than we end up working longer during the day to ensure we get in all our hours and necessary production. I always check with HR to get full information rather than relying on information 2nd or 3rd hand, even if it is coming from my supervisor (I much prefer to see the information in writing so I have something to refer back to).

Isn't it 2 15-minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch if.. - you are full time? nm

Nuance breaks/lunch - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, you are allowed a 30 minute lunch and the 2 breaks. If that is still difficult, often you can work a split shift. Basically what I was told is that for scheduling purposes they needed to have a good idea of when you are actually working and expect you to stick to that (other than the lunch/15-minute breaks). I used to have the 12-hour window to work 8 and had children to pick up from school and then made dinner, so I had a split shift with actually 3 hours off in the middle to accomplish that. Hope this helps.
