Walmart as bad as MModal! - mb

Posted: May 19, 2013

Worked for MModal for 8 years before I quit last year in disgust. Got a job at Walmart as a cashier, it's my first week, and I was pulled aside by my trainer and she explained to me that Walmart has a production goal of 1000 scans an hour! Then she showed me how to put in a code on my register that stops the clock during low times in between customers. I was floored that they could require such a goal that had nothing I could do to control it. Like, how can I control how many customers come to the store? Unbelievable.

That is completely crazy but that explains the high turnover rate with cashiers at my local Walmart. My mom worked for them after she retired. One time when it was time to clock out, her boss told her he was locking the doors and nobody could leave until the work was done. Needless to say, she quit.

This just makes me sick. I guess that... - kshel

since their employees are paid very poorly, they treat them as ignorant folks who will take anything. The "I gotcha" rule. I have decided to stop using Wal-Mart over these kinds of things. They have turned this company, yet another one, into a sweat shop with little pay to the people who make them a good company, not the higher ups who, by the way, don't seem to have a clue.

I am SO glad for your mom to be smart and get the heck out of there. The only problem remaining is that your mom is left out of a job and she needs something, I am guessing. Very sad! All a lose, lose situation.

Just a thought--let's consider not making a savings on the backs of our sisters (and brothers). If enough people refused to shop at sweatshops, um, I mean stores, like Walmart, they might treat people better. I don't want to get a ten-dollar savings at the expense of someone like the OP. Yeah, I know, someone will call me a lefty socialist and I don't care. I just think people need to be treated better--both at Walmart and in the MT world. (That is largely why I left MT--I could have worked another 5 years or so and used the money to travel--something I love to do--but just did not like the way MT was going. Jeff Skilling has nothing on most MTSOs.)

Boss locked the doors and prevented workers - from leaving???

I'm no attorney, but that definitely sounds like unlawful detention. If that happened to me, I would have called the police.

I don't know how long ago that happened to your mother, but she might have a case against Walmart. Big corporations get away with things like this because workers are fearful and don't stand up for themselves.

At the webpage below, I read about a case in which a Walmart employee working the night shift suffered a stroke. Because the store doors were routinely locked during the night and there were no managers with keys there, ambulance personnel could not immediately gain access to the employee when they first showed up. The employee subsequently died. It looks like the courts ruled against the estate of the employee because the complaint was split between 2 issues: one of exacerbation of medical condition sustained as a result of the unlawful detention and the other being the unlawful detention itself. The courts decided it was a Workers Compensation issue. Keep in mind, too, that Walmart's pockets are deep enough that they have a slew of top attorneys. Even still, I would not be deterred by the outcome of this case.

NO ONE is going to keep me from leaving when I want to go, and I would legally go after anyone who tried.

So you are saying - a retail store

[ In Reply To ..]
has now figured out a way to pay on production and not hourly? What do the cashiers who work in the 24 hour WMs do at 3 a.m. when there are very few customers? I thought all these jobs had to pay at least min wage whether or not there were any customers, or at least put you to work doing something during slow times.

What I get paid - mb

[ In Reply To ..]
I get paid barely over minimum wage in my state (used to make over twice that at MM in the good days!). I work in a 24-hour store, on days, so I don't know what, if any, production goal the night cashiers have. I DO know that yesterday was my 4th day of work and I got sick last nite with a fever. I've worked at home for the last 20 years and now I'm that I'm out in the world I guess I'm susceptible to any bug that comes along. Also, since I'm "older" now, my muscles are rebelling against standing up all day. I feel like crap and am so depressed and I don't know what to do now.

Are you in a larger city or smaller town? Are there ANY other options for you? One of my best friends (my age, nearly 70) is in retail and although she loves retail, she is going to have to give it up because the standing is really ruining her health. Her hubby is disabled, not sure what they will do. Anyway, sometimes there are women's groups that will help older workers find other jobs. Do you qualify for any kind of retraining? I just feel so sorry for your situation. I'm really sorry this happened to you.

Walmart--now that explains why - barbv

last Friday night there were only 3 cashiers working and the lines were out the door! Guess they wanted to make sure everyone made their "production" and screw the customers!

You cant control it which is why she showed you how to - stop the clock during low volume times. nm

how many customers come through and the downtimes, so they can regulate hiring and staffing.

Never worked there, but... - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds like she was showing you how to stop the clock, so to speak, so that it wouldn't work against your production if you had no customers. That part sounds reasonable, it's to your benefit.

Well in my state, Walmart is so fricken slow - at the lines!

[ In Reply To ..]
Then my state is so incredibly Liberal who ALL DESPISE WALMARTS in my state and will not ever step foot in a Walmart.

I personally LOVE Walmart, but when I stand in line the cashiers are the slowest moving people EVER.

My Walmart - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Our Walmarts are slow too...find it hard to believe there is any kind of production number they require. I never see any of them seem to rush to get people out. A lot of the cashiers are senior citizens..even our speedy checkouts (express lanes) are slow.

A good friend of mine worked at Walmart and wow, could he tell you some stories. You should rent a film called THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICES. You can get it through Netflix, etc. I personally refuses to shop at any Walmart, EVER, because they make their profits off of people like you and other workers. I am so sorry you are having to endure this.

I worked there for about 16 years. It used to be a great place to work. I was so glad to get out 3 years ago because they were already starting the cutting back the help, timing us on everything we do by giving us a list of everything we have to get done in a day on a computer and telling you you have x amount of time to get each item done without giving any consideration to something Sam Walton was all about which is called customer service. Ever since he died, it has really gone to hell. So sad his kids only cash the checks and could care less about his legacy.

Walmart and M Modal - kabina

[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, I've always thought Wal-Mart was a bad employer. I worked for them twice as a cashier, once back in the early 1990's and then again in maybe 1995 or 1996 and both times it was a bad situation. They have the cashiers used like as production lines and productivity is looked at very strongly. A lot of cashier jobs are that way now, they count how many scans you do an hour etc. just like a production job in a factory. But Wal-Mart has always been a crappy employer.

Thanks everyone - mb

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for your support everyone, it really means a lot to me right now. I worked Saturday and right after my shift I started running a fever. It went higher and higher, to above 102, and I started getting shortness of breath. So, I went to the ER and was diagnosed with pneumonia! The ER doc said it was probably because I had spent so many years working at home (20 years as a transcriptionist) that now I was working near people as a Walmart cashier that I am now susceptible to any virus that comes down the pike. He very smugly explained to me that when he first became a doctor, he was sick all the time, too, and that eventually I would develop a hardened immune system and be able to be more resistant to these bugs. What he failed to see is that I am easily 30 years older than he is and what is "just a bug" to him is an illness that can lay me flat for a week. It's so frustrating. I had to call in sick at Walmart for at least 2-3 days and they'll probably fire me, or "counsel" me, but at this point I'm so depressed and sick I don't really care.

If you haven't already seen this, it is definitely worth a look. It can be found on You Tube, there is a link to You Tube at the bottom of this page.

I know a lot of people have some very strong opinions on Walmart, but looking at change.org as they are trying to put yet another Walmart in my local area and people are MAD.  I'm reading through the comments people are posting and can't help but think a lot of things people are saying about walmart could be said of mmodal! Leaving MT For Walmart?
Dec 13, 2010

I have way too much time on my hands today so I thought I would ask this question.  Has anyone left the MT profession and went to work at Walmart, a pharmacy, drug store, or any other store?  Will they hire us since we have been an MT for 10+ years?  What about factory jobs, you know the light duty assembly kind?  Have any of you had any luck getting hired in anything other than as an MT without going back to school? ...

Less Than WalMart Paycheck
Aug 26, 2011

Finally happened.  My husband's 32/hr/wk WalMart check was more than mine today.  How degrading is that? Big decision day today.  Do I walk and spend 40 hours a week looking for a better job, which wouldn't take much? I have tried everything to get my ASR production up. There is no way, at 40% less a line than full transcription rate, that I can even make a difference.  So, so depressed today.  Don't know what to do. ...

and noticing that it is really not doing a good job lately.  I've not usually had problems with it when it comes to regular English-speaking doctors, but this week it has been a mess.  It is either not putting in entire sentences or putting in off the wall stuff that sounds nothing like what is being said.  I've come to expect that with ESL, but certainly not with English as native language.  Weird.  Must be taking some time off for MT week. ...

MModal, WHY????
May 24, 2012

Why is MModal posting job openings, when so many of use are running out of work or worse falling into the pool--what with the pay cuts, VR being paid half even though it takes nearly as long to edit most reports, and the fact that I only get my "primary" accounts about 30% of the time and the rest of the time I am typing from the pool so that nearly every report that comes up is a new facility or dictator, I have gone from making $16 an hour to minimum wage. I cannot afford this. Why can' ...

Well, I suppose any transciption job would do the same.  Before this profression, I was a good little girl who would never swear or cuss and even chastised others for doing so, but since becoming an MT (especially with MModal), with all these horrendous dictators and this buggy platform, if you listen from outside my office, you'd think someone locked a surly sailor with Tourettes in with me.  I've called dictators names that would make a construction worker blush.  I al ...
