Leaving MT for Walmart? - Anyone done this?

Posted: Dec 13, 2010

I have way too much time on my hands today so I thought I would ask this question.  Has anyone left the MT profession and went to work at Walmart, a pharmacy, drug store, or any other store?  Will they hire us since we have been an MT for 10+ years?  What about factory jobs, you know the light duty assembly kind?  Have any of you had any luck getting hired in anything other than as an MT without going back to school?

I've toyed with the Walmart I dea, but then - SM

my mom worked for Walmart for over 20 years and in the last five years she worked for them, they froze her wages and refused to give her anymore raises, they "did away" with her job and decided to move her around the store, even telling her that she was on "cart" duty, having to go out the parking lot and bring in carts. My mother was 63 years old, is a small woman, and had had two foot surgeries and a back injury while in employed with Walmart. Basically, they wanted her to quit. They were doing this to all the old timers so they could hire new people at not even half the salary that the old timers were making. Finally, they phased out my mom's job again and she contacted dept of labor who said if they phase out a position and you don't like the new position your are given, you can refuse and Walmart can fire you, but has to give her severance pay. So my mom came out all right. She got three months salary and because she was 20 years with the company, she was 100% vested in profit sharing. So she got her profit sharing, 401K, and a nice severance package and is now retired.

My point is you will be hard to press to find any corporation out there that treats its employees fairly anymore. It's all about the almightly bottom line. Good luck!

without school for retraining you would be qualified for - cll

a position as a medical secretary or surgery scheduler, etc. in a doctor's office. If you really want to get out the transcription end, looking into in office positions like that. I have a two year degree as a medical assistant and what I was trained for in two years of college, they take people off of the street and train them for these positions now. Having the medical terminology background, you are more qualified for those positions than most people. Good luck!

Listen to CLL. Some of those jobs are basically - anon

literacy-not-needed, low-wage positions you've described. Even if your income has never been high as an MT, your knowledge and experience should qualify you for much better. Plus, you're in the health industry, which is expected to grow, grow, grow in demand for new workers.

working at Walmart - Laura

I've been trying for months to get a job at Walmart (although I've heard they do not treat their employees nice), various drug stores...even Burger King..they told me with my background I'd only work there temporarily until I found something better.

Could someone answer a question for me? I have a USB pedal, I am supposed to do a job and do some samples to see if I will be hired, but low and behold my pedal does not work with the files she sent me. This wouldn't be the first job I lost because of this. Can someone please help?

Program Switch can change voice files to file compatible with - your pedal. There is a free trial. nm

Wal-Mart, really? - mt2

[ In Reply To ..]
With 10 years in the medical field, why not go to your local hospital. You would be qualified for a lot of positions not in MT, you would be paid better and have better benefits. Just because you leave MT doesn't mean you have to go to Wal-Mart or fast food. Even try a local doctor's office, mental health facility, look on your county or state job web site, dental office, or even try a bank.

Local hospital doesn't use MTs any longer... - what else is there

[ In Reply To ..]
Our local hospital all use EMR now so what other jobs would I be qualified to do...secretary jobs? I would love to know what jobs we can do in a hospital because I would love to go back to a hospital. I would even be willing to train or take a class or two but I cannot commit to going back to college without money coming in because grants do not pay for everything and somebody has to be home in the evenings with the kids to get homework done. I have no one to help with my kids. BUT I need to be working!!!

hospital jobs - mt

[ In Reply To ..]
Go to your local hospital web site and look at the jobs. There are registration clerks in just about every area of the hospital or unit clerks that you would be qualified for, assistant to department heads, etc. You will actually have to do the looking though. Some areas like pathology still have in-house MTs too.

Even with EMR, there are still jobs - cll

[ In Reply To ..]
?The office I work for doing MT is directly into their EMR. There are in office personel that need to scan documents and people to maintain the EMR. In a hospital, along with these positions, you have unit seretaries, intake, even the x-ray department you have people who maintain films, etc. You need to log onto the websites for your local hospitals and they usually have their employment opportunities listed. They will pay better and have much better benefits than retail or such a job. Even if it is something that you do not think you are qualified for, but are interested in, apply anyways and go for an interview if called. You might be surprised that you have more qualifications than you think or are giving yourself credit for. Of course, positions like RN, PA, CRNP and physicians you need degrees, but there are a lot of supporting areas that with your medical terminology knowledge you would fit into nicely. Good luck!

What's wrong with secretarial jobs? - Just Asking

[ In Reply To ..]
If you truly need to work, I would think that a secretarial job would be a blessing. What would be wrong with it? If MT is not working for you and you are making little or nothing, then surely a secretarial job would be better, wouldn't it?

Exactly what I was thinking. There are better options if you want to leave MT - or you could change MT jobs

[ In Reply To ..]
MTs are qualified for all sorts of medical positions at hospitals and clinics if you want to do something else. Another option is changing MT jobs. They aren't all bad, if, and that's a very big 'if', you have the skills required. Many MTs don't and prefer not to get them. That's okay too. It just limits your options.

Less Than WalMart Paycheck
Aug 26, 2011

Finally happened.  My husband's 32/hr/wk WalMart check was more than mine today.  How degrading is that? Big decision day today.  Do I walk and spend 40 hours a week looking for a better job, which wouldn't take much? I have tried everything to get my ASR production up. There is no way, at 40% less a line than full transcription rate, that I can even make a difference.  So, so depressed today.  Don't know what to do. ...

Mmodal = Walmart?
Jan 14, 2013

I know a lot of people have some very strong opinions on Walmart, but looking at change.org as they are trying to put yet another Walmart in my local area and people are MAD.  I'm reading through the comments people are posting and can't help but think a lot of things people are saying about walmart could be said of mmodal! "I stand against these large ugly corporations that treat people all along the "supply chain" as something to be exploited, from the displaced third worl ...

Walmart As Bad As MModal!
May 19, 2013

Worked for MModal for 8 years before I quit last year in disgust. Got a job at Walmart as a cashier, it's my first week, and I was pulled aside by my trainer and she explained to me that Walmart has a production goal of 1000 scans an hour! Then she showed me how to put in a code on my register that stops the clock during low times in between customers. I was floored that they could require such a goal that had nothing I could do to control it. Like, how can I control how many customers ...

Grocerystores, Walmart, Target
May 26, 2014

wondering if anyone has any idea what the starting pay is for these places, does it vary by state or do they have  pay system that starts everyone at about the same.  I have been doing this for 40 years.  I wanted to work a few more years before retiring.  The company I work for recently cannot meet payroll, they are either late or pay in installments. This has been going on for several months and it is sort of a regular thing for them now.   I need my pay all a ...

QC Leaving?? Leaving More Work For MTs?
Jun 14, 2015

Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us.  Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers??? Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work.   From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

Leaving MQ?
Jun 14, 2010

I've been sending out resumes almost daily for close to 8 months now.  I've also been on at least 20 interviews but once they actually realize I've been working at home for almost 20 years, I don't get any job offers because they "want office experience."   I've been so depressed with so many medical offices turning up their noses at me because I've been working from home.  I'm quite sure I probably know termin ...

Leaving The Q.
Jul 20, 2011

Just wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus of long-timers leaving the Q finally. The account I worked on for 15 years just up and vanished Monday - without a word to any of us. I applied for, and got, a job offer within minutes of sending my resume. I know MQ has beaten us all down over the years, but there are actually other companies and people who appreciate our abilities and stamina to say with such a company for so many years in spite of it all :) ...

Not Sad To Be Leaving The Q,
Sep 10, 2011

I've been cleaning out my office to start a new job soon, and I came across some things from the good old days, i.e., before the Q.  I found email certificates my first CCM from 10 years ago sent when I kicked it line count and quality-wise.  She didn't have to do that, but back then, we got respect as much as we gave it (I was HS back then).  I also found some old pay stubs from when I was a tier 1 and just getting into the routine.  I now make 1/6 of what I did wh ...

What I've Seen Since Leaving MT
May 01, 2012

I recently left the MT field but am in a position where I have to review medical records daily. I've come across mistakes that make me question where they came from... was it a VR report that an editor didn't catch... was it a transcription error... or was it a doctor error. Some of the things I've come across were a statement along the lines of "would've healing well"... I figure this was supposed to be something like "wound is" healing well. I came across a discrepancy ...

To Those Leaving MT
Sep 13, 2012

Curious, as to those getting out of MT, where are you going? I am soooo dissatisfied with this profession today. My wages are half what they were hourly only 4 years ago (VR for me is not profitable). The account specs get more and more complicated and you have to work on at least 5 or 6 accounts to keep work. Add in the hard to understand accents (I mean can't even understand the dictator's name half the time) and the left off demographics, and it is a recipe for low, low wages. I liv ...

I'm Leaving
Sep 20, 2012

Since ASR and off-shoring came along I have been wanting to leave the industry and after 5 years of procrastinating I finally took the plunge.  I have been applying and interviewing and after turning down two offers from different companies I finally accepted a position a couple days ago as a nurse aide with 1/2 hr lunch which food is provided, two 10 minute breaks, every other weekend off, every other holiday off (time and a half pay when I do work holidays), $.30/hr extra weekend pay, 4% ...

So Now Leaving A Mg Off A Med
Dec 27, 2014

That just seems weird. I get if it's supposed to be mcg and you put mg, something doctors often do in their dictation, but leaving off the mg, 3.0?
