Question about NJA process. Cannot find information I need to see. - drn

Posted: Apr 22, 2013

I can find the policy about what to do if you have had 15 minutes of NJA. NJA instructions have been: If another job does not come up within 15 minutes, you can file an NJA slip through Remedy. But, if a job comes up within that 15-minute period, you are to do that job and the 15-minute wait time starts over again. -- In the first paragraph of the NJA policy. What most, if not everyone, have been told to do is to sign out whilst waiting for another job, and if a job comes up before the 15 minutes is up, sign in and do the job(s). I find no documentation of this procedure. Conundrum is, if you remain signed in while waiting for a job, you will be affecting your hourly line count adversely which could, in turn, inadvertently lead a good employee down the path of performance management and possible loss of their job. So, advice is to sign out. This signing in and out while waiting for a job can go on an entire shift with jobs trickling in prior to the 15-minute deadline, or, if one cannot financially afford to sign off for the day after 15-minutes and stays on until they have a full shift, i.e., signed in time, it can take 12 hours to get in 8 hours of work. In my opinion, if you are sitting there signed out and actively waiting for a job, you should be paid for that time; you should be signing out from production and signing in to work availability while waiting for a job. So, I am thinking that, since I have been signing in and waiting for a job and then signing in for a job, and have not been signing in to work availability, I am owed money for all the time I have sat and waited and not being paid for this time could be considered a violation of labor codes. Anyone agree with this analysis? Can anyone find a written policy regarding waiting for jobs and time card entries? Because I never thought of it at the time, I do not have any email stating to sign in and out. If I had not deleted that email, which I doubt I did, it would have been deleted during one of many company email clean outs.

I would specifically ask your TSM for clarification - and make them explain that

Make the TSM explain the entire procedure and list your questions about production and how punching out affects that, and then also address the fact that it could take 12 hours to get in 8 hours if you have to keep punching out, and see how they specifically answer.

My TSM insists that we have to wait a solid 15 minutes, so if a job comes up after 10, to bad. Then you start your 15 minutes over after that next job. I plan to save all emails about this.

This is completely illegal.

Were you ever instructed to clock in and out? - dnr

Punishment for low lph during NJA is just plain wrong and we should not have to avoid punishment like this! Especially by manipulating the time clock.

Escaping this problem of artificially lowering the line count by clocking in and out was instructed to solve this problem.

Do you have to do 8 hours if you remain clocked in, no matter - how long it takes? SM

My thought is if you are signed in waiting for work, your time
sheet shows 8 hours. Not your fault there is no work. MM wants you as employee for 8 hours a shift at the agreed upon time. Isnt that the crux of it? It is not your fault MM cannot promise work during that time. That is on them. They are getting your 8 hours that you guarantee them. THEY are not guaranteeing you the work they lead you to believe would be there.

Worded that last line wrong. They are not giving you the lines - they guaranteed would be there? SM

I know what I am thinking, but I am having a hard time getting my thoughts to glom together into a cohesive idea, lol. What I mean to say, you give them the 8 hours, if the lines arent there, that is on them. Not you.

If you get NJA for 15 minutes straight, you can file a ticket and be excused for the rest of the shi - but the problem is

[ In Reply To ..]
If you remain signed in, every minute you are not working, your average lph is going down which could result in your lph being too low and leading to performance management.

Not with my TSM. She said after NJA for - North MT

15 minutes, we have to request work. So if we then get a job, it starts all over again. Then if we get NJA again, wait another 15, request work and so on and so on.
How do you request work? Plus I work 2nd shift and weekends. - north too

Also, my time zone is behind TSM's time zone. The usual time I get NJA is late in her time zone and she may be in bed by then.

I have never received any info from this TSM regarding NJA. My TSM is RW in the north.

I used call the RTL, but I have been told there is no longer an RTL to call. Also, in the past, there was no RTL at night when there were RTLs.

TIA for any info you can give me.
My TSM does not have those initials you - North MT

mentioned. I am in the same boat as you are though with time zone, TSM in bed, etc. Nobody answers the requests for work anyway. My time is done here though because I found another job as an MT, and will soon be out of this hell hole. I am sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

I would hate for low lph to affect my PTO rate. Dont care about - the other. We can both sit there SM

for my 8 hour shift of no work and chat. How can MM ding us for not having work. Also, havent I heard here on the board that it is really illegal for someone paid on production to get her PTO calculated in hours?

Do you get 8 hours work or NJA. I am assuming you work for MM. - an MM question

[ In Reply To ..]
If you don't work for MM, I doubt you know what the usual procedure/problem is.

This isn't meant to put you down, I just need to know you work for MM, otherwise, a similar situation for another MTSO employee would be different.

If you work for MM, are you ever having NJA, or are you in one of the lucky regions?

Until recently I worked for MM. THis is just something - that never made sense SM

[ In Reply To ..]
to me. HOw does this work legally? I know, I know, this is MM, not suppose to make sense. When I would get NJA I would take the NJA, no pay, as I am not the sole support of my family. But I always wondered about this.

Does The Testing Process Just Irritate Anyone Besides Me?
