Potential Employers Interview Process - carrie

Posted: Mar 22, 2011

So I graduated in February and began the job hunt.  Finally I receive one call back from a local company. To date I have attended two seperate interviews. The second time I was supposed to test but the computer was not working so a couple of weeks later they schedule testing at one of the transcriptionist house.  I test and the computer freezes up.  Luckily the test is recovered the next day and sent to the boss for review.  Get another call today, and am told that even though they "really like me" they want me to test again but now with harder dictations.  I am becoming frustrated that I am giving up so much time.  I stopped applying for other jobs because I really want this one!  I keep telling myself since I am the only other applicant I should be patient and do what they ask.  But what if? What if i invested all this time and reschedule my life to interview and test so many times and they don't hire me? I haven't even drug tested yet which is a requirement, but to me it just means a longer wait til I know I got the job.  Should I be grateful that they are even taking the time since (1) I am new and (2) we live in a time where jobs are hard to come by? Any advice, or anyone else been through this hiring process? Just frustrated....

It depends on how much you want/need this job - See message

They have probably been burned before, hiring MTs who "said" they could transcribe when they couldn't. I've done that. I learned the hard way that the only way to find out is by testing.

I've had people run out crying when presented with the simplest of reports.

It sounds as if they gave you a test and you were able to transcribe those reports. Now they 'may' be trying to decide exactly where you fit. Are you able to do some types of reports, but not ready to do others?

If I were in your position, I would look at this as an opportunity to practice on some new material. I would be eager to see where and how MTs are working in this company. I might even learn quite a bit from the experience.

On the other hand, if I already have a job and it's costing me money to be away from it, I wouldn't do it because I don't need to. It's all about whether or not you want or need the job you have applied for. Also remember that they might have several other applicants who are doing the same thing. You may be competing for this job. Now your only question is whether you want it that badly or at all.

Flew through second test! - carrie

Well made the trip to test a second time last night and even I was surprised at how well I did. Other than a few latin words "corpora os" I did really well!
I am excited to hear the news today and will be gravely disappointed if it is a no. I am not employed right now and as a new MT I find it is hard to break into the field.
Thank you for the advice. You are probably right about being burned before. I know that I will stick this job out and learn quickly, but how can they be assured? Especially since they have to invest extra time into training me! I like that the PA's review and correct the transcription and with them being right in office I can learn so much faster!

Let us know how you do! - Will be watching for the good news

Carrie, don't get discouraged yet!!! I am new and graduated in March and can't find a job!!! This newbie stuff is difficult. Everyone wants experience! How can we get it if nobody gives us a shot? Where Have All The Employers Gone?
Jan 21, 2011

Even though I just let my AHDI membership expire, I was still due one more issue of their journal, Plexus, which I received today. In previous issues, I always scanned the "Employers Guide" pages in the back of the journal, and there were many  employers listed - at least two pages' worth. This newest issue, however, lists only seven. Perhaps the rest went overseas? ...

2 Jobs At Once 2 Employers
Oct 15, 2009

I have been an MT for about 4 years now.  I have been working with one employer doing speech editing transcribing 3200 lines per 8-hour shift.  However, I just received a 2nd job from a different employer working part-time and they pay more.  My question is one employer needs my computer to have Word 2003 on it for their program to work and the other employer needs my computer to have Word 2007.  How can I do both jobs at the same time.  Has anyone done this before and i ...

Dear Employer:  Please make client sheets clear.  I am so tired of reading a client sheet over and over trying to understand how something is supposed to be done.  There's got to be a better way.  Don't put information in one area of the client sheet and then an exception to the rule somewhere else.  I read through the instructions until I find what I need, if there is an exception to the rule it should be where the rule is, not somewhere else in the instructi ...

Rude Employers
Jan 19, 2011

Are the rest of you as disgusted as I am with not hearing back after sending an application?  Are all these ads for work just made up to look like there are jobs when in reality the ads are fakes?  I hear from so many other MTs/editors that they apply for jobs but never hear back, even after receiving permisson to do testing.  Maybe we should all stop applying and let them sit and spin! ...

Employers' Platforms
May 14, 2011

Has anyone here turned down a job with an MTSO because their platform is crappy? My employer's platform is TERRIBLE!!  You have go through 15 mouse commands (no hot keys!) to perform the simplest function such as signing off a job.  I have never seen more inefficient software in my life!!  Of course, since they own it now they claim it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.... Would love to hear your platform stories!! ...

Tell The Potential 2nd Employer About The 1st?
Sep 20, 2011

Took me quite awhile to figure this out. You need 2 MT jobs because they all overhire to keep many more employees less busy to pay less. In my day, you kept your 2nd job quiet, but what is the way to do it now? Is it good or bad to be looking for a 2nd part-time job, do you tell them. Is there anyone who left the first job to go full time with the 2nd one or switched them? And is it better to go IC in the 2nd job because of flexibility? I sound pretty dumb! ...

Potential Scam
Sep 19, 2012

I was contacted by a company wanting to interview by chatting.  I did all that, and it sounded so great.  Set your own hours, work as much as you want, etc.  All I had to do to get started was pay $295 for the software they use.  I did some fast Google searches in another window and decided not to.  They pointed out that as an Independent Contracter, I was responsible for my own equipment.  I pointed out that I bought my own hardware, which is almost universall ...

For Any Potential New Nuance Acquisition
Jun 21, 2014

Every time there is a hospital or clinic acquisition, those "acquired" MTs will be crammed onto existing accounts as their own account/work types become more streamlined and less available as more and more of it is done more efficiently with voice wreck and 3 shifts of people to do the work. Think of it like when a larger dog moves into a pen already crowded with too many dogs. All the pre-existing dogs have to scooch over yet again (exist on less) to make room for the new dog in the cage.& ...

Isnt It Illegal For A Potential Employer To Ask Your Age?
Nov 16, 2009

Have any of you had the feeling you weren't getting callbacks from employers you applied with because of your age?  I've been getting that feeling, and I thought that discrimination based on age, among other things, was illegal. Are The Remaining In-house Employers Discriminating
Jul 22, 2011

at home for MTSOs?  Some ads seem to want X-number of years of RECENT on-site MT experience.  Others don't say that, but with so many failed job applications this past year, even for areas that I've specialized in for 20 years, I'm getting no interest, and often no replies at all.  In addition to having more than 20 years' experience, do you think these employers have a problem with work-at-home MTs?  Like maybe they see us as undisciplined, poorly trained ...

Getting Response Back From Prospective Employers

Potential To Switch From Straight Transcription To SR?
May 15, 2013

Hi - I have been doing acute care work for this client as an IC for almost two years. While I enjoy the work, I know it is probably in my best interest to start doing some SR work as well. The company I work for just asked their ICs if anyone is interested in learning the SR platform for some new SR work that is coming onboard. I am currently only making .07 cpl! I know that SR line rates are generally lower since the "assumption" is you can go a bit faster, can anyone give me a fair id ...
