net zero wireless broadband device question - safe or not to use ?

Posted: May 25, 2014

Would this be considered unsafe because it is not a cable attached to the wall kind of situation? I'm trying to cut costs and wondered if this is an allowed way of doing MT work? Thanks in advance.

I have heard that scammers seek such things out and can mess with the signal and even log on with your IP address and steal passwords easier...(or something along this line...) same as if you use free wifi some where

If you are worried about an unsecure connection you can also connect via a VPN. There are tons to choose from (just google VPN). Some are free and some have a small fee. It helps make a public connection secure (in a hotel for example).

If you are using regular wireless in your home you should be making it a secure network so people need to enter a password to connect to it. It's smart to do that regardless just so you don't have people "stealing" your internet connection.

I have used Clear wireless in the past and it is encrypted with a password which you put in when you set up your connection. Since the signal is usually through a cell tower, it may not be as fast as cable or DSL, but I have not encountered any problems in the past.

I work from a personal wireless, and have for 4 years without problems. Wiring a hard connection to my office would be a challenge, and it's not worth it to me to go through those steps. It is password and firewall protected.
It is less than 100% safe, but good enough for me. I have no complaints.

Check with your employer, you need to be HIPAA compliant. You can be fined if patient identifiable information falls into the wrong person's hands. I agree with the suggestion of connecting through a VPN.

both my current employer (MTSO) and previous employer (hospital) knew I had wireless, and raised no objections. I'm working to get out of MT, and plan on not spending another nickel on anything work related.
Thank you - BTDT

You were the one asking the original question about wireless being safe. If you didn't want any opinions you should not have asked. By the way, connecting to a VPN is free. I use one when I connect to Wi-Fi hotspots with my personal device.

Thanks to all. I can make an informed decision. - OP

I am going with Comcast for internet and will get Ooma for my phone when I move in a month. That will be roughly $50 for Comcast a month and a one-time fee for the Ooma modem at $150 and then about $4.50 a month for taxes and fees only. That is quite a savings from the $107 a month I am paying Century Link for a phone/internet 2-fer at the moment.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I could count on some answers.

Check into frontier if they're in your area - cheaper internet than Comcast.

I have Frontier DSL for my internet access (home use) and have been happy with them. They furnish a wireless modem/router and I only pay $20 a month. You have to have land line service with them to qualify; I already had that and went from cable to them because of the price. They might have other/faster plans but the fastest I can get is 6 MB on the download side, you might want something faster than that. It works fine for my needs, however. Depending on where you live, there might be fiber available through Frontier but I know that is pricey. If you are trying to save money, what you are doing with Net Zero is probably your best deal unless you want to fork over extra money for a land line.

Security can be locked down. The real problem - is data speeds and plan limits.

As far as I know, NetZero's top plan has a max of 12 GB per month - and that's both upload and download.

There are a number of free apps available for your computer that will measure how much data you're using while you work. Install one of them, let it run for an hour while you work, take several such "samples", and prepare for a surprise.

Anyone With Broadband Internet, Do You Go Over 5 GB?
Aug 21, 2010

I have had it with Hughesnet and am going to try Verizon broadband.  I was just wondering if others who use it have any trouble staying under the 5 GB monthly limit.  I really only use my computer for work, work email and a small amount of personal email, paying bills, and facebook.  Very occasionally a you tube video or something like that.  I'm not sure what that all would add up to. ...

Does anyone have or know of where to get wireless headphones.  My cat has chewed through the wires of 3 sets of headphones (at $18 each its getting expensive).  After the first 2 sets I have been putting them in a drawer when not in use, but the cord sticks out of the drawer attached to the computer and she found her way around the box while I was watching TV and now my third set is gone.  Within seconds she chews right through the cord.  So, since there are wireless keyboard ...

Wireless Mouse
Dec 01, 2011

I am just wondering if any of you are using a wireless mouse and how they are working for you?  I currently use a wired mouse and have for centuries.  Since I use mine more than most people, it seems, they do not last.  I am having difficulty finding wired mouse any longer due to being outdated.  I am hesitant in getting a wireless because wireless tends to slow me down with a second of lag.  Those seconds add up and I am just wondering how beneficial they are.  Any ...

Switched Over To Verizon Wireless.
Jul 12, 2012

I have had HughesNet satellite for the last 2 years.  This has been extremely slow and lots of down time with weather.  So I was told that Verizon would be much better.  Now that it is installed, I am disappointed to see how slow this is.  My download time is so bad, I doubt any company would hire me or maybe they would, but with all the waiting for downloading of files, I could never get a good line count.   Supposedly Verizon says they are putting up more po ...
