getting certified - anon

Posted: Apr 01, 2013

I'm currently studying my rear off to become certified, CMT license.  Have almost 15 years of experience under my belt doing this but don't want to waste my time if there won't even be a market for us anymore.  Should I keep going?  Is it worth it?  Can't decide.

I dont know of any companies who reward that - anymore

I think it is a waste of money to test, and I would use that money toward college. But thats me.

In my 20+ yrs of doing this, I've never been asked at interview if I was CMT or not. Never! nm - NYMT

The CMT - is

not a license. It is a boondoggle by a private organization, AHDI, to relieve you of the fee they charge to administer the test.

A license is issued by an actual body with recognized authority that has an interest in regulating something for the public good. AHDI is just interested in getting your money.

It won't get someone the job any faster than if you went to one of the good schools. If you went to a bad school, you won't get the job period.

Since you are 15 years in, not sure why you would want to do this. The CMT (as other posted stated) is not a license. It's a made-up credential. By made up, I mean that the organization came up with it. It's not recognized as anything, not even to transcription companies, though the MTSO knows what the initial stand for.

It won't get you any more money on the job, either. It's hundreds of dollars, a total waste in my opinion. When I first started out, I thought about it. Then something interesting happened. I asked MTSOs if they consider CMTs over other MTs and the answer was "no."

pay extra for the CMT credential. Synernet will even help defray the cost of taking the test. I was thinking of applyng at Synernet but they don't hire from my state and a few others. So all is not lost on this so-called "bogus credential". Some companies do honor it.

Even if there was a future in MT (there is NOT!), - the CMT is a SCAM. Dont do it!

If you don't believe me, or the other posters above me, go 'way back thru the archives on this site pertaining to CMT "certification" (not worth the paper it's written on) and AHDI. This is a pocket-lining cash cow a couple of unscrupulous biddies came up with that isn't worth even the fraction of a fraction of a cent per line it supposedly brings those who hold a CMT certificate (i.e., were scammed).

Keep your money in your own pocket, where it belongs.

MTSOs use any excuse to try to justify slave wages (sm) - Angie

I wouldn't put it past some to say you are only being paid .03 CPL because you aren't certified.

In over 25 years as an MT I have never once been asked if I am certified.

With pay falling as low as it has, I think most MTSOs - would have a hard time getting - sm

a "certified" MT to apply at their company. And an equally hard time convincing current, "noncertified" MTs that they needed to get the CMT. (After all, they were smart enough not to fall for the CMT ripoff in the first place.) So I think it's something that is just fading away on its own. The joke that is CMT has just about run its course.

CMT - your choice

What is your reason for getting a CMT? More money? It might happen if you make sure your prospective employer knows you have it - but, in reality, probably not. Personal satisfaction? That is why I did it. Its our only recognition - I like having it. You ask if it is worth it..worth what? I've had two jobs reward me for my CMT. The CEs also keep me current in our field.

Getting Certified Without Going To School
Sep 29, 2010

Would it be possible to get certified if you have not attended school?  I have a friend who has worked as a coder for almost 20 years and has never pursued her certification.  Can she just take the test and become certified and still reap the same benefits as someone who completed a course and then became certified?  I am trying to convince her to do it and have even offered to help her study but I wanted to make sure she doesn't have to attend school to do so. ...

Going Back To School And Getting Certified As A Medical Assistant
Mar 24, 2014

I have been in the field of Education for 23 yrs and have been an Administrator for the past 13. Due to the economy,  schools would rather hire those with no experience and pay them less than seasoned veterans like myself. I am considering going back to school and getting certified as a Medical Assistant (which would include Phlebotomy and X-ray tech) and Medical Billing/Coding or Transcription. I am currently un ...

"State Certified" Birth Certificate
Apr 25, 2015

I took some pre-employment documents to a notary yesterday.  The birth certificate, issued by the hospital where I was born 62 years ago, I was told would not do for ID because it was not "state certified".  In order to get a state certified birth certificate, you have to have the notary certify they have seen my birth certificate, then the state issues one they call "certified".  This makes absolutely no sense to me and only delays employment.  Anyone else had this experienc ...
