fat loss in hands - Mike

Posted: May 18, 2013

Hello, this may be an unusual question, but I have been transcribing for about 3 months now, after completing 12 months at Career Step. I've been noticing over the last week that my hands are looking almost like skeleton hands. It's like the fat is disappearing and the bones are becoming more prominent. Also, the veins in my hands are becoming very, very vascular. They are about the diameter of a drinking straw.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this common with excessive typing? I haven't lost any weight, so it isn't from illness.

Look forward to your replys.

Mike

What would happen to the rest of you if you exercised 8 hours a day?

The blood vessels aren't getting bigger and there aren't more of them. They are just more visible now with the fat gone and muscles underneath.

close to 40 years transcribing and many hours a day - never happened to me. NM

nope - never

And I've done this for 40 years and some days do 4000 lines, so I'm kind of fast. No, I don't think your hands are being worked out that much and if they are, I daresay you're doing something wrong :)

I'd look to another etiology and see a doc.

...that you're probably just noticing them more now that you're constantly working with them. I don't know how old you are, but age plays a factor as well.

Wish age played a part in taking away some - fat but I just have not seen

it happening, anywhere. Heard your appetite diminishes with age. Mine might have some but certainly not enough to put a dent in the weight issue. Hands after 35+ years of transcribing, certainly not any more slender.

In my 40s. I think you are right. Never did this much repetitive hand movement before in my life, for a job.

age? - huh

[ In Reply To ..]
My hands have not gotten thinner. Yes, the veins are more prominent and the wrinkles are noticeable but the fat? Still there :)

age no factor, I'm over 60 - doing this since I was 23 and - never had this problem. NM

Wish I could say my bottom is flat from excessive sitting in an office chair, too, but I know what lack of exercise looks like!

designed for a laugh, nothing else.

That's what you get... - sm

button by mistake, but I love this. The only thing I've lost weight in from this job is my bank account and wallet.

That aside, perhaps it's related to gender differences?  (assuming your moniker is an accurate reflection of your gender)  Men do indeed lose weight easier and faster than women, so maybe you're just showing the effects of your recent hand exercise via work more than most/any of us XX's do.  If you're not feeling any effects of RSI, I wouldn't worry about it.  But if you're getting gnarlier in the hands *and* feeling any twinges of pain at all, I would have it checked out.

And as far as preventing RSI, I highly, highly recommend these computer gloves. http://softflex.com/main.html   I've been using them for over 10 years, and they've literally saved my MT career (though sometimes I wonder if I should be glad about that or not, sigh).

nerve entrapment - any other symptoms?

One cause could be from ulnar nerve entrapment, but usually you would have other symptoms as well, such as numbness, tingling, and weakness.

Not To Count My Loss
Nov 05, 2009

why at the end of every shift do I still bother to calculate my line totals - transcription & VR - when 9 out of 10 times I am only discouraged???  Its not my lack of skill, knowledge , speed or anything I have done that determines this loss.  Why, oh why, do I hang in there.  Maybe for the occasional good day?  The high I get when I can fly through a report of an ESL doctor, because I know better what he is trying to say?  Or maybe its the constant editing with ...

Loss Of Benefits
Jan 13, 2010

Okay, I may be dense, the rest of you may have figured this out long ago!  Many times I see comments here about people who cannot get enough work.  Well, at my company, if there is a low volume of work and you cannot meet your line count you are placed on part-time status and cannot regain full-time status until you have met your commitment for 90 days.  Yes, you lose your benefits....your health insurance, paid holidays, dental/vision, etc.  Well, heck, look at the money the ...

I have only been getting approximately 25 hours a week.  Yeah, I'm broke.  Luckily I have a husband who works or I would be in a mess.  Anyway, they have emailed me and said I have to have minimum 30 hours to continue to have medical ins.  Well, if the work isn't there, what am I supposed to do?  So, I asked my team lead to please give me a backup acct.  So she has sent out requests to other team leads and said she would let me know if one replie ...

VOICE RECOGNITION AND LOSS OF JOB
Jul 30, 2014

Just wondering about this.  For one company that I work for, I had a secondary account -- a hospital, that we were told (e-mailed) we would no longer be typing/editing.  The voice recognition program was getting better all the time and probably was pretty good at this point.  We were just told that we would no longer by doing work for them.  So 2 possibilities: 1)  The hospital was not happy with our editing?   2)  The voice recognition program had gotten so g ...

Great Loss For Softscript
Jun 06, 2015

Just recently discovered Softscript lost an amazing production manager.  I have worked under a lot of production managers and by far this was one of the best; knowledgeable, helpful, understanding, easy to work with, but at the same time was straight forward and honest in their approach with the group.  Such a shame.  You will be missed greatly.  Wish you the best.    ...

Hearing Loss/rheumatoid Arthritis
Oct 28, 2009

Anyone out there have any hearing loss? I have developed significant hearing loss. My ENT has encouraged me to keep transcribing, with the use of a boosted headset and I am trying. Telephone use is very difficult and almost non-existent. Boosters do not help. Also diagnosed recently with RA and having difficulty with my fingers, but not letting it get me down. I am on treatment that is working well. Just wondered if anyone else is having any of these issues and how they are dealing with them. Th ...

Any Articles About Productivity Loss From EMR And VR Usage
May 24, 2011

Does anyone have any links to articles that explain the loss in productivity for physicians and their offices because they are wasting time with EHR/EMR's typing their own notes or spending way too much time editing their own voice recognition notes when they could be seeing more patients?  I have lost a few clients to VR systems and EHR/EMR systems because they think they will be more productive, when they actually lose money and time because of the loss in the number of patietns see ...

Hands-On
Feb 07, 2011

I have worked for Hands-On for a few years now and I think it is a well run company. I recently had surgery for breast cancer, and the owner and manager were very compassionate and concerned for my well being. They are always available to help if I have a question. It is one of the best jobs I have had. You have to work hard, but after all it is a job and if you follow the "rules and regulations" regarding quality of work and turn around time you will get along just fine. You also transcrib ...

Paresthesia In Both Hands
Oct 21, 2009

Date: 10.21.09 I am 44 and a medical transcriptionist. I started working as an MT at age 35 and since then has been doing this job. For the last one year I have been experiencing numbness and paresthesias in both hands and lots of trouble with neck stiffness and fasciculations in both shoulders. I type for 8-1/2 hours from Tuesday to Saturday. I have concluded from this that onset of carpal tunnel starts when a person(male or female) is 40 or above 40 years of age.   ...

Hands-On Transcription
Dec 27, 2010

I found some old posts in the Archives but was wondering if anyone had any recent experience with this company. Their website is a one-pager with not a whole lot of information but looks legit enough. Any information or input on either question is appreciated. Thanks! ...
