Supervisor ignores emails... what would you do? - Poor MT

Posted: Feb 11, 2012

At this company for one year now and do not like it, not one bit.  The main problem is that the 'manager' ignores my emails.  I complained for MONTHS about the account I was on with a response like "I'll call you later" or response a few days later blowing me off.  I finally get on another account and just do not like it.... not a good fit for me.  oh, and my hours were cut to 30 and I'm sure it's because I complained about the other account.  So.. I see an ad for a position within the company that I would like and I email this wonderful supervisor and get no reply.  I just don't get it... it's disrespectful and uncalled-for.  I was with a large MTSO for five years (that MQ bought) and never had a problem with a supervisor like this... always got a quick reply.

Let me clear up my emails tho when I said I complained for months... I only emailed her once a month, not like every day or anything like that.  I've been in medicine for 30 years and an MT for 15.   I don't think it's that unreasonable to want an account that I like and that I can make a living on.   So what do I do now?  Email HR about the job?  Any suggestions?  I have been looking elsewhere but we all know how that goes.

wow, I have never requested a different account - didnt even know that was an option

To me, an MT with 15 years experience should be able to type anything and should not be able to request (demand) the easy work. If you cant make a living, maybe you should leave the field. I have a couple years more experience than you and I have had the worst work for the past 10 years. Hard, hard work, 80% ESL, and never once did I think I could just request a new account because it was not a good fit. This is not shoe shopping! It is a job!

My opinion... "Put on your big girl pants and do your job."

I have and my MT friends have as well - Poor MT

Why would you stay on an account that doesn't work for you? I wouldn't stay in a regular office job if it wasn't a good fit either... I want to be happy in what I do for 8+ hours a day, not miserable. But that's me. Believe me, I have on my big girl pants and I do my job. I want to love my job tho.

sounds like you just want the gravy work - maybe you should get own account then

I tell ya what, dont ever go work for MModal because you will get over 15 accounts and none of them easy work!
I don't hear that at all - otherposter

I am hearing the poster describe frustration with her supervisor's failure to communicate.

Her supervisor is disrespectful enough. Do you have to jump on the bandwagon, too?
I can respond with my opinion, just as you have - with yours.

Geezzzz.... I don't want easy work - Poor MT

I just want to like my job... didn't say anything about being only on an easy account. I love a challenge! I just want my supervisor to answer my emails and see if I could get on the other account.
You sure are easy to judge and sound awfully angry... maybe you hate your job and that's why.
Enough said... won't bother posting a question again on this site, I tell you that, if I can't even depend on my fellow MTs to be understanding and decent to me. I guess this is the way people have become and it's quite sad.
Moving from a poor-paying account to a better one - is just good sense. Sometimes

you have to quit and go to another company to make the income you need. It's better if you can manage to do it without taking that drastic step. I have changed accounts. It took time, starting as a secondary account before becoming primary, but it was just part of taking care of myself.

The notion that you shouldn't take care of yourself because someone else will have the bad account is silly. Nobody does this for charity. It's all about income.
That is what I hear too. This person just wants to - sm

be able to cherry pick and wants permission to do so!! No sympathy here at all!! If I was her supe, I would have fired her for this by now!!!

You say that you complained about an account and your supervisor didn't respond to you about it. What was the problem with the account that you did not like? Why did you want a different account and were you asking to be placed on a specific account? Just wondering how you know that moving to a different account would make you happy? What if that account wasn't a good fit either? Then what, expect more responses from your supervisor to be placed on another account. I get the point you are trying to make that your supervisor isn't responding to your e-mails. I really wonder if any account is truly a good fit for any of us. I think that any account can cause some sort of dissatisfaction in one way or another.

I would listen to the message ... - sm

...being conveyed by the nonresponse.

You are complaining ... no response tells you that complaining does not work for them. In other words, you are not accomplishing what you want when you use that approach.

As an example, we have someone who emails 5 times a day to ask that we make this doctor stop doing this or that doctor do that. "He needs to say this, not that." "I do not know what that means." "This is unclear. It would be better if he said this." Well, he darn sure can say it that way, we explained to her what it means on several occasions, and nobody else thinks it is unclear. Everybody else can deal with it except you.

That might not be you, but look at the situation from their perspective. No response tells you something. What is it?

You are just seeing rude behavior. To you, your emails are important and deserving of a response, hence not responding is rude. It does not give you the validation you are seeking.

When people do not validate your efforts by ignoring them, you have to consider that it is deliberate. They are sending a message. That message is "no." They can't do anything about it, or they think the problem is on your side, or something, but whatever it is the answer is NO.

Someone has to do that account. They expect all their MTs to do that account. They expect you to do it, too. That is what they are telling you. They cannot or will not accommodate you further, so either focus your efforts on making it work or on finding another job.

very interesting responses indeed - Poor MT

Wow... you would fire me because I want to change shifts??? I email my supervisor ONE time to ask about another account and that in itself is enough to fire me?
No.. I do not cherry-pick. I type what I get on my system. Always have. I'm getting paid by the report and they are long reports so I'm mot even making minimum wage and I'm 50 years old. Amazing how people just assume the worst in someone. I'm absolutely shocked and sad that I even posted a question on this board. Thanks so much for the support, fellow MTs. Good luck to all of you... I wish you only the best and hope that you're happy with your behavior.

I understand where you are coming from - wheres_my_job

In a nutshell, you realize you are exploited. You try to advocate for yourself, to STOP being exploited, underpaid, overworked. The supervisors blow you off because what are you gonna do about it? Quit? Then they'll just hire someone else, and go through the whole cycle again - unless it is someone so desperate and thinking so little of themselves, or in some kind of untenable situation where they don't even have the energy to advocate for themselves in the workplace, and then that person will receive a miniscule paycheck for the amount of effort they put into horrible accounts, but at least they have "job security!"

I feel ya. Ignore these other posters. You're not doing anything wrong - except expecting to be treated like a human being on the job. Forget it - they just want bigger profits, and they're going to take it out of YOUR PAYCHECK.

Take care, another MT on the way OUT.
What ever happen to seniority or job posting within the company before being given to the general ma - sm

JMO but I think MTSO waste way too much money hiring and rehiring and training and training again. The OP made a comment as to seeing a position posted for a job on a job webpage or something like that when she is already in the company and established why not let her find something that fits her hours and helps her make a decent living. Postings in my opinion should always be in-house before posted to the public, but that would mean management and supervisors would have to work as hard as the MLS. Supervisors should acknowledge all e-mails -- that is part of their job --- that is what they are paid for even if it is to say No can do. Agree with wheres-my-job, the MLS is sometime treated like dirt on the bottom of shoes.

looks like personal attacks won out over civility here - otherposter

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry to the OP. I don't think you deserve the personal attacks you're receiving. It's hard for me to understand why one of my supportive messsages was deleted while so many cruel, nasty messages remain.

no one gave a personal attack - they just stated OPINIONS

[ In Reply To ..]
The opinion is that she wants an easy account without long reports.

She did state that the supervisor would not respond, but maybe that is because they have no other accounts for this person. While I do agree that the supervisor could handle this better by stating, "I have no gravy accounts for you at this time," the point of the post was that she wants a different accounts!

There was not 1 rude post, just people giving their opinion of her situation. Dont like the opinions, hit the dislike button and move about your day.

oh. when I shared my opinion above, I was censured - no harm done

Supervisor Ignores My E-mails??
May 11, 2012

I am new to this MTSO so I have occasional questions and have directed them to my supervisor.  Some get answered, many get ignored.  I have asked some more than once.  How frustrating.  I'm not sure how to take this.  I would think it would be to her advantage to answer them as it refers to formatting, etc.  Maybe I should ignore her requests to work extra hours?  How would you handle this?  It really makes me wonder about this company. ...

An MT Supervisor Told Me (Regarding MTs Who Aren't Doing Well)

An MT supervisor told me that when they aren't happy with an MT's work because they aren't following instructions or are getting sloppy, they just take them off the schedule.
