Direct Action Letter Writing Campaign for - Real Public Awareness of

MT Week (that begins Sunday) and what working MTs actually bring to "patient safety."

Let us take meaningful action today and this weekend to regain MT Week as a week that TRULY recognizes the working MT. Ship Letters to the Editor off electronically and by snail mail to your local papers for publication in their print and online editions.

AHDIs theme this year is "patient safety" in case you didn't know. What a joke and so self-serving! How about a theme of "The MTSO How-To Guide To Ensure More Americans Fall Into Poverty While 1% Corporate America Gets Richer"

We encourage you to take this weekend and to draft your letters and get them sent by early Monday morning. Hopefully we can meet publication deadlines. Write letters particularly if you are OOW and waiting for work during your shift. You'll have many points to make in your letter!

Feel free to post your submissions here as we can work together to develop effective strategies and effective talking points for the future - for healthcare consumers, doctors, hospital executives and transcription supervisors. Politely and humorously explain why they may be part of the problem rather than part of the solution to America's economic downturn, that the cheapest product at the cheapest price and their "bottom line" MUST NOT be the only considerations.

C'mon ladies and gents, let's rally!

Here's a link to motivate you: http://www.savethepostoffice.com/great-minds-think-alike-and-so-do-usps-district-managers

Here's 2 more links to inspire you: nationalnursesunited.org (see link to Roseanne Demoro interview on right side) It's well worth the time!

Listen to interview with Kathleen H. Jamieson at http://billmoyers.com/segment/kathleen-hall-jamieson-on-campaign-misinformation/.
It will surely inspire you to educate yourself so as not to fall prey to misinformation from either the right or left!

Let's rally ladies and gents!

Oh Geez! - Stop already with this...gag

You people are too much. This reminds me of the Occupy people, you know the homeless and drug addicts without jobs in the first place?? Either change with the times or get out of the way and let the rest of us work in peace.

now with the lawsuit, we can mention that in our letters and emails. Things are looking up!

Letters and emails - what?

[ In Reply To ..]
What exactly are you going to say? Help I ran out of medical reports to transcribe? My company doesn't appreciate me? There are thousands of MTs and 13 women got mad and want minimum wage? How embarrassing!
So it's embarrassing to you that MTs want - to earn at least SM
[ In Reply To ..]
minimum wage. We should just be good little girls, shut up, and be thankful that we even have a job, is that it? Does it matter to you that it is against federal labor laws to not pay minimal wage to workers? I guess we should just continue to work for free and lie on timecards so they won't be found out as well. The more we expose them, the better for all of us. Let's all tell our stories of how patient safety is no longer the number 1 priority for this predatory companies and the hospital administrators as well.
Re: Letters and emails. What are you going to say? - How about....
[ In Reply To ..]
''Skilled workers who used to be paid a fair, living wage and were able to support themselves and their families, now have experienced wage slashing, justified by greedy MTSOs with false claims of an inferior technology called speech recognition boosting their production. Highly skilled and experienced medical language specialists now, thanks to corporate greed, find themselves making less than they did a decade ago with many struggling, through no fault of their own, just to make minimum wage.'' There, does that meet with your approval? A lot better than YOUR childish rantings and juvenile ridicule. Want to read something truly ''embarrassing''? Go re-read your own idiotic post.

[ In Reply To ..]
How I wish the mods would just give WMJ and her ilk their own board so we didn't have to search through their posts for relevant information.

CHER, CAN'T THEY HAVE THEIR OWN DISGRUNTLED BOARD PLEASE?

It's all about the pay...fix that, and nobody's "disgruntled" - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
Just the money, that's all...
You are disgruntled - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You call yourself an MT and you don't know the meaning of disgruntled? Look it up. This is nothing more than DISGRUNTLED MTs who for some reason or another had difficulty making the lines and adhering to the rules of the position in which they agreed to. I make my lines, punch my timeclock and am content with my job. How dare you write a newspaper speaking for all MTs. Who do you think you are? I'm not asking you to speak for me. Nutjobs! You people really need to get over your imaginary self worth.
Yeah, I'm just the daring type - wheres_my_job

hilarity ensues yet again...the "high dungeon" against women actually participating in our vaunted democracy...it's hilarious, really. I mean, my goodness, is this the 1800s we're in? Oops, where's my broom, so I can go beat some dusty rug out on the clothesline, and then bake some biscuits in a boiling hot kitchen. You know, before I throw off my apron to go to my meeting, to fight for women's right to vote, or have access to effective contraception...oh wait...that was the 1900s....only 100 years ago......
I have a great idea - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Why don't you guys all make T-shirts to wear while picking. They can say, "When I grow up, I want to be an MT."

This woman is totally out there. The 1800s, huh? Men do this job too. What a strange post. Have fun comparing contraception in your newspaper submission. Yikes!
It sure is BIZARRE how the naysayers will go to any - lengths possible to justify their beliefs.
[ In Reply To ..]
"Live and let live" is something they just can't wrap their tiny minds around. It doesn't matter whether the subject is unions, contraception, politics, voice recognition, religion, child-rearing, education (which according to them, I guess women shouldn't pursue), dishonest employers, or whether or not the world is flat.

They can't let even ONE person who has a different point of view express their opinion without getting sniped at by those haughty b's who think they are just so much better than everyone else on the planet, that they, and they alone, are the only ones who are right. EVER.

I happen to be one of the well-payed MTs on this board but do 100% support the ones who are standing up and saying enough is enough. I have been there too. I don't get the attitude "I'm doing great, you would too if only you weren't lazy, a complainer, or didn't have an inflated sense of your importance."

WMJ is right. Why would any *sane* person be - "happy" about wage cuts & wage theft?
[ In Reply To ..]
The only ones who should be happy with that particular arrangement are the MTSOs.

Too bad MTSOs, those days are drawing to a close, even if we have to shut you all down to accomplish it.
I am with WMJ and the sentiments - expressed 100%. If SM
[ In Reply To ..]
this upsets you so much, just go about your business and don't participate. We are talking about our future financial security, and only asking to be paid commensurate with skills and experience. This is not isolated to the MT industry, but the issue of illegally paying below minimum wage might be. How can anyone be okay with that?
This field isn't the only field. You do realize the country is in a - recession
[ In Reply To ..]
don't you? It's not just the MT field. It's everywhere. Get rid of the politicians that cause this and get people in who know how to create jobs for EVERYONE.
It's not the politicians - wheres_my_job
[ In Reply To ..]
it's the huge amounts of money they/we need to raise, in order to run for public office - where does that money come from?

It's also ALEC and other groups like that, who WRITE the legislation and give it to the legislators whose campaigns they fund.

It's HOW political campaigns are funded in the US, not the politicians themselves. If there was NO fundraising, and everybody got the same amount of money, and that's it!! Same air time, same everything - we'd probably have 5-10 legitimate political parties in this country, that could actually vie for president etc and WIN - instead of just the current 2.

As well, is your reasoning NOBODY should speak out about their situation, when SO MANY are suffering the same illegal practices???? No, as many people as can, in as many fields as possible, need to get heard - to inspire others to do the same.
Infrastructure is badly needed in this country - and a plan was SM
[ In Reply To ..]
introduced that would employ thousands of people. So, they know what to do, some just decided that bringing down this president was more important. Have you seen the video of a very wealthy owner of an investment firm talking about how this country can get back on track? It isn't trickle down, that has proven to not work, the consumers are the key to a thriving economy. When consumers have little to no money to purchase, economy goes down Wages have been stagnant for the middle class for 30 years while rich have increased one hundredfold. If I can find the name of that man,I will let you know so you can watch it.
The way to create jobs for everyone is to STOP - selling them to the lowest bidders overseas.

so you aren't even giving an accurate description of what's going. So LITTLE is about the workers - "disgruntled" or otherwise - interestingly, can't the Founding Father's be described as "disgruntled colonists?" I'm sure the King of England felt the same way about them, as you feel about us.

Ain't no shame in being disgruntled...

MTSOs are the one destroying this field - wheres_my_job

If they can't pay anyone fairly for doing the work, - then yes, they should be SHUT DOWN.

[ In Reply To ..]
Either play by the rules (which in the United States are - "pay your workers at the very LEAST minimum wage", or else don't play at all. Move to India, lock, stock and barrel. Offices, mangement, servers, owners, ALL OF IT. Get that stinking mess out of our country if you can't run an honest, LEGITIMATE business.

How is this going to kill the work at home MT? - SM

What do you think might happen? That hospitals will bring jobs back in house? They won't do that, they save too much money not having to provide office space, equipment, benefits, etc. Seriously, I would appreciate an answer.

MT week - grateful

[ In Reply To ..]
I have already received a gift card from my company for MT week. In this economy, I find this kind and thoughtful. With all the job ads out there,I am often led to wonder why folks are out of work? Do you sincerely believe the cpl rates will be increased as the technology becomes more advanced? Nah, history with other professions has taught us this.

OMG R U 4 REAL? Talk about a blatantly fake, - transparent attempt at posting as a real MT!

It's true purpose isn't even to make us MTs feel good about our jobs. All it's good for is letting the MTSOs and their management goons, who KNOW what they're doing every day in the name of a bloated paycheck is WRONG, pat themselves on the back and feel good about themselves for a week.

MT Week is a total crock of U-know-what.

Yes, it is possible to make sweeping statements, after looking at the TRENDS in a given industry, and how things are moving in the aggregate - are you suggesting that only Wall Street types get to look at things in the aggregate, from on high - and not us lowly AMERICAN CITIZENS???

C'mon, this is supposed to be a democracy, in which everyone has certain rights.
WMJ - grateful
[ In Reply To ..]
WMJ, you are now making huge assumptions about what I believe. Tsk. Typically, though, we attack others for habits or actions we ourselves have.

Do you receive a paycheck? Have you left the industry YET? If you complain all the way to the bank, are you sure you are going to make any difference? It just seems like you are ready to fire away on here constantly, but are you relying on others to take action while you sit and work?

focus on how it impacts the reader - JMO

[ In Reply To ..]
It should be short and concise and get them thinking with as few words as possible, as people have short attention spans especially when they cannot relate. It has to outrage them mostly for how it impacts them, like having personal information going out of the country, and others. They will skim right over it if it is too detailed. JMO.

Have to be tactful about other cultures and countries, too. Focus on the greed mongers.

sorry but I don't care for the message the nurse's union is putting out there. - Crabby

[ In Reply To ..]
because isn't Obamacare supposed to cover uninsured people? I'm tired of people wanting to tax the money I made by taking a risk and investing in a company via the stock market. I worked for that company named in the lawsuit but I refused to play the game of fingers on the keyboard time for the timecard. If they ran out of work, not my problem. I refused to make the time up or stay on past my time to make up said time. I left to go back to patient care, but I still type part time for someone else to keep my skills and experience up to date.

Good for you for refusing to play their - game. I wonder SM

[ In Reply To ..]
how long you were employed there. Did you leave as soon as you refused to change your timecard? If not, how did the company deal with your refusal? I also want to point out that, depending on an MTs financial situation (sometimes being the sole breadwinner) refusing to do this means losing the job and/or making less money. It would be a miracle if all the MTs who work at that company would refuse to alter timecards at the same time. Wonder what the company would do? Wishful thinking. One thing they COULD NOT not do is ship all work overseas. We still have jobs because that is not an option for them. That is an empty threat.

For probably 6 months after I refused. What were they going to do? Fire me? - Crabby

[ In Reply To ..]
If I couldn't get a blank, I didn't waste more than a minute or 2 researching it. Yeah I got the nasty e-mails, the "you have to make your dollar amount this pay period" and the "You are pending too much". Hey, I tried. They couldn't have it both ways. Either you want me to do fingers on the keyboard timecard or the actual research/typing/editing. I wouldn't expect too much out of the lawsuit. Hopefully, they kept the e-mails they received about the timecards, because I cannot recall if they actually did send those types out or not.

You said you went back to patient care? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Back in the late 70's and early 80s I worked as an RN in rural New England for $5.25 an hour. During this time we (general duty RNs) began trying to organize a union for wage issues and working conditions. We had HUGE push-back from administration including nursing supervisors and it was really slow going, so many stops and starts and failures. Mostly scare tactics were used against us. In 1986, I went back to medical transcription because I was raising my sons and could earn more than working crazy hours as a nurse by this time I was making about $7 an hour with an extra $1 or 2 an hour when I was acting head nurse or supervisor). Well, persistence finally paid off. A few years after I left the nurses were working under a union contract and now are paid more than 5x that at the same hospital! I see MTs going through the same thing now. I am of retirement age so would not benefit but think that some kind of organizing for the common good is necessary.

In my opinion it depends on what the actual common good is. - Crabby

[ In Reply To ..]
I avoid union places at all costs because I personally don't believe in them. I worked for a Harley dealership for awhile where mechanics and parts people had worked shoulder to shoulder with the owners for 20+ years. Then 1 day a union rep came sniffing around and suddenly the owners of the dealership were spending several hundreds of thousands of dollars a month trying to fight so called bad conditions. Yet there were none. People they thought were their friends suddenly turned against them. When the union decided they couldn't get in, they left without so much as an apology.

As for the nurses being in a union, I think it's wrong for them to strike while there are patients to take care of. Unions are the reason why I have worked for an agency when I did patient care.
"...when I DID patient care"...Really? HILARIOUS verbiage - NoLongerAnon
