What are some good study materials for the CCS exam? - tilly

Posted: Aug 18, 2014

I graduated in 2013 and am just now getting around to having the money to take the tests.  I really want to take the CCS first. So, I wondered what are some good books or work books I should get to brush up and practice with? Thank you :)

Faye Brown - What did your course provide?

Just my opinion, but I never recommend taking the CCS -- the hardest, most comprehensive test out there -- first. It is more cost-effective to get some practice and work the bugs out of your test-taking with the CPC. That allows one retest and also opens up a lot of jobs.

The chances of failing the CCS are very high. VERY high. In the range of about 1 in 2 Given that, I would not want to gamble my limited testing funds on it. I would go for the CPC because it is easier to achieve.

Your post does not make it sound as though you have a good handle on the CCS. If you are asking about review materials, then you don't sound familiar with the CCS material. If you are now looking to brush up after being away from it since some time in 2013, you don't sound cose enough to mastery of the material.

Faye Brown is the best reference for inpatient coding. If you took a good course, you probably have that, along with an AHIMA CPT textbook. Just to note, the CCS requires considerably more knowledge of pathophysiology than other exams, so you should review that in depth.

I have the Faye Brown 2012. I just wanted some extra coding workbooks to do exercises. - Tilly

I have the other books I got with Andrews as well. I have the coding workout, but I feel like since I don't code on a daily basis, I would like some other coding books in order to keep some kind of coding up which would help also to prepare me for the exams.

I'm interested too, have Faye Brown also - another MT 2 coder

I would like extra practice as well and I do have Faye Brown 2012, which I have reviewed. I see several CCS study guides on Amazon, anyone have any other recommendations?

Go to www.advanceforhim.com and look for CCS PREP!

You should see it on the left.

It's been around for years. Very good, too.

Thank you much! - tilly

Is There Really Noone Who Thinks Taking The CMT Exam Is A Good Idea?
Jun 20, 2012

I am studying for the CMT exam, but the process is taking the joy out of my life.  I noticed that on a previous post, everyone unanimously voted NO regarding the question about whether the CMT is worthwhile anymore.  I am seriously considering dropping the idea of sitting the CMT exam.  Am I making a mistake?  (I really do not want to take jobs of increased responsibility in the field, just make sure I stay employed.)  I'd appreciate your words of wisdom. ...

Order Of Reference Materials
May 07, 2010

I know I have come across the answer to this question in the past, but can't seem to put my fingers on it now......  1.  CP   2/3.  BOS then Standards OR Standards then BOS?  In reference to the q.h.s. question...  since all 3 references usually appear somewhere on each CP, would not q.h.s.  vs nightly depend on the order of reference materials used?  The vast majority of my CPs have "BOS and Standards" at top and JCAHO at the bottom. ...

Discrepancies Within Reference Materials
Dec 03, 2011

A question about how to type something came up between coworkers, and in order to resolve it I did some online searching.  I was stunned to learn that there were just as many "expert/authoritative" sites saying that their way was "the right way" to do it as the other way.  (None indicated that it was optional or that either way was fine.) It is striking how many differences there are amongst reference materials; I even found "tendinitis" misspelled (as "tendonitis") in one o ...

Study Should Be Done
Jan 27, 2012

I think if a study were done, findings would show that the tediousness and repetitiveness and intricacy of the editing required for this particular ASR will slowly but surely drive you insane.  I am so nervous, I chew gum like a wild woman (and now need my second crown which I cannot afford), have developed tics and skin picking, and eat voraciously --- due to editing.  Flame away, but I have typed for 25+ years and never had a problem (actually enjoyed my job); however, after 5 or so ...

Coding Study On One's Own
Apr 25, 2010

I'd like to begin studying medical coding on my own to see if it it's a match iin terms of learning and liking the field. I have 30+ years of transcription experience and usually learn fairly quickly. What books/workbooks do you suggest as a start to see if this feels like it will work for me? And for people who have done this on your own, what did you include in a program of study for yourself? Are there some areas that you feel an in-house course is needed?  Replies greatly app ...

I am getting ready to enroll this week with Andrews for medical coding, and am really looking forward to this new challenge and learning opportunity!!  After 30 years as a state employee, I'm actually switching careers. Opinions On Course Of Study And Job Outlook?
Mar 31, 2013

Usual story -- I loved MT, but I'm about to be laid off and know another MT job would probably pay minimum wage (if that!).  I'm lucky, in that I'll get enough unemployment to live on and will probably still have enough savings to pay tuition.  However, I have no preexisting college degree, and both unemployment and tuition money will only stretch to about 5 quarters. I've already passed the CPC exam once, can brush up and pass it again.  My local co ...

RMT Study Guide - Mistakes In Answer Key
Jan 26, 2013

Hello, I am a fresh graduate from MTEC . I am currently preparing for AHDI's RMT exam. I bought the study bundle which consists of the RMT exam guide and an audio CD. Al in all, I have learned a great deal from the study guide... but... yes, there's always a BUT... While reviewing the entire RMT exam guide, I noticed some blatant mistakes as well as unclear questions. One example is a mixup between "affect" vs. "effect". The RMT study guide's answer key states that "effect" is a ...

Is Self-study Through AAPC An Option To Become A Coder?

MT Going Back To School. What Field Of Study Would You Pursue M
