Study Hours - Bizzi One

Posted: Jul 25, 2010

I am looking forward to enrolling in a medical coding class through Andrews School this fall.  I was curious as to how many hours a night or week a student puts in studying.  I work full time, and also have a prn evening job doing transcription in the community that I live.  Those hours are flexible.  Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm an Andrews student and I spend, on average, 2 hours a day, 7 days a week. I'm expecting it to take a little over a year to complete. It really helps to have that MT background. If I didn't, I would expect it to take at least 50% longer to complete.

I'm not an Andrews student, take my classes through Career Step and a community college in my state. I spend approximately the same amount of time as Raine, 2 hours a day. I work full time, go to the gym and 5 a.m. and then study as soon as I get home from work in the evening. I am able to do a little more on my days off. I'm just starting my coding modules so I don't know if that will slow me down. I'm also planning approximately a year to complete my program. Meal planning is crucial, make things ahead of time and freeze them if you can, lol! My school lets students work at their own pace so your completion date is up to you, I'm guessing Andrews does the same.

Study hours - kinda tough

I am an Andrews student and also have a full time transcription job. I "try" to spent at least 3 hours per day x5 doing school work. I have to say if I didn't know medical language I would be in trouble with getting everything done. Even with my experience as an MT, I do find it very difficult to get all of my studying, reading and doing what needs to be done without stressing out at the end of the week. I am also newly pregnant, so that could also be another factor, just being tired. It's a challenging course, but I know I will know my stuff once I get out. Good luck to you! :)

Thanks! It really sounds like Andrews School does a nice job of educating and preparing the up and coming medical coder. Everywhere else I've looked, nothing compares quite as comprehensive as Andrews. I know that there is really no school in Iowa that I could attend that would give me that sort of medical coding education and prepare me well enough to become certified and ready to find a job - although that will probably be challenging in itself! Good luck to you too!!

Thank you for the replies - I'm so anxious to get started, but want to get my ducks in line before I start, clear the calendar, etc. so I'm ready. I wish you the two of you the "BEST OF LUCK" in your studies and in your future career!!
Thanks again!

Good luck to you too - sm - Aspiring coder

Please don't discourage me from applying to Nuance.  I just lost my job today and I need a job BAD!  Plus, I've only got two semesters of college left before I graduate and move out of this field.  Anyway, can someone tell me what 2nd shift hours are? Study Should Be Done
Jan 27, 2012

I think if a study were done, findings would show that the tediousness and repetitiveness and intricacy of the editing required for this particular ASR will slowly but surely drive you insane.  I am so nervous, I chew gum like a wild woman (and now need my second crown which I cannot afford), have developed tics and skin picking, and eat voraciously --- due to editing.  Flame away, but I have typed for 25+ years and never had a problem (actually enjoyed my job); however, after 5 or so ...

Coding Study On One's Own
Apr 25, 2010

I'd like to begin studying medical coding on my own to see if it it's a match iin terms of learning and liking the field. I have 30+ years of transcription experience and usually learn fairly quickly. What books/workbooks do you suggest as a start to see if this feels like it will work for me? And for people who have done this on your own, what did you include in a program of study for yourself? Are there some areas that you feel an in-house course is needed?  Replies greatly app ...

Opinions On Course Of Study And Job Outlook?
Mar 31, 2013

Usual story -- I loved MT, but I'm about to be laid off and know another MT job would probably pay minimum wage (if that!).  I'm lucky, in that I'll get enough unemployment to live on and will probably still have enough savings to pay tuition.  However, I have no preexisting college degree, and both unemployment and tuition money will only stretch to about 5 quarters. I've already passed the CPC exam once, can brush up and pass it again.  My local co ...

RMT Study Guide - Mistakes In Answer Key
Jan 26, 2013

Hello, I am a fresh graduate from MTEC . I am currently preparing for AHDI's RMT exam. I bought the study bundle which consists of the RMT exam guide and an audio CD. Al in all, I have learned a great deal from the study guide... but... yes, there's always a BUT... While reviewing the entire RMT exam guide, I noticed some blatant mistakes as well as unclear questions. One example is a mixup between "affect" vs. "effect". The RMT study guide's answer key states that "effect" is a ...

Is Self-study Through AAPC An Option To Become A Coder?
Sep 03, 2013

I have 15 years experience as a medical transcriptionist, have an AA degree, took anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, etc., and have taken one non-credit ICD-9 class, and one non-credit medical billing class, both at a local community college.
