MT going back to school. What field of study would you pursue m - FutureThinking

in this day and age? Because of a chronic illness, being a WAHM MT is perfect for me. Given the current state of things, I feel I may need to return to school and have a backup plan. Looking for suggestions, insight, thoughts on what you think might be a good avenue to pursue if you had to choose something that isn't physical (like no nursing) but something our MT background might help with. Hope this is the right place to ask this!

[ In Reply To ..]She had trouble getting a job so she started freelancing. Now she's making $30,000 a year working 4-5 hours a day at home. She has deadlines but usually has a week or two to do the work. She's expecting a baby in September so this job is perfect for her. She started out doing SEO articles and has progressed to editing books and writing blogs. She loves it so far. She's gonna help me get started in it and thinks I'll get the hang of it in no time (I'm 56, BTW). I'm also open to doing technical writing if the opportunity arises, although I think that's more for science geeks, which I definitely am not!

My plan was to get a BA in either Journ/English or possibly PR but after further research, realistically I would be competing with so many younger folks. AND, it takes years to develop a portfolio/experience. That is why I am considering the online copyediting certificate. (Can you ask your daughter if she has any insights about this certificate?) It is at USC-San Diego.
I have written several SEO articles the past year with BrightHub, and have recently been accepted to write for Suite 101. It has been difficult to find time to write since I started school last fall.
I would LOVE to edit books, and I am thinking with my experience as an MT I would be good at editing medical journals. Hard to get a foot in that door without a degree tho.

[ In Reply To ..]I looked into tech writing too, and I found there's a group of them, almost like AAMT (back in the day that was their name!), so you might want to contact them for info. They have chapters all over; in fact, I'm in Scottsdale, and they have a few members right around me. I'll ask my daughter about the copyediting aspect and get back to you. Until then, good luck!

[ In Reply To ..]I am back in college working on a degree to be the person who manages these EMR systems that are replacing a lot of us. The degree is in healthcare information systems. It is not offered in many places yet but it's a degree that combines business administration, computer information systems, and healthcare administration, so if I were someplace this was not offered I'd probably go for a major in computer information systems with a minor in some type of healthcare administration program.

Yes, I have a husband who works full time, and this is just a little additional income. But I think the key is to decide what you're interested in doing, your talents, hobbies, and in general--what are you good at? Just an idea. Good luck.

I was told by one freelance writer to try to submit to local publications just to get my feet wet. She had more great advice: Don't get discouraged, always do a search on publishers (type the publisher's name along with the word "scam" or "fraud"), and write on a regular basis. ...and submit, submit, submit!!
I am also interested in good old-fashioned "domestic" writing, as in moms at home, saving money, common sense on issues,conservative views on politics. etc. etc.
I would love to take a class like you're taking!
I did just purchase the Writer's Market 2010 book, as many have recommended, and it is a wonderful resource.
The WAHM website has a "WAHMs who write" thread, although this mainly seems to be for online writing. However, it is really helpful if you have questions, as there are some experienced writers who can guide you.
Just "for fun" (and hopefully a little profit), I'm gathering together all my recipes and working on a cookbook on the side.
Mostly, I'm going to write about what I "know" about, as so many do, and I hope to have fun and also hopefully make some money. I wish you much success in your new venture!!

[ In Reply To ..]not sure of the situation with that, if it going the same direction of transcription or not, but you can still do it at home and I think it is like a year long course. The company I work for does hire coders at home but I have no idea about their pay. I am going back for nursing and can't wait to get out of this field myself, but that is my opinion. I figure I don't the direction its going, so time to bow out.

[ In Reply To ..]I really like to write as well. I had initially considered a bachelor's in health care administration but no colleges w/in driving distance offer that. I'd like to write. There are degrees in creative writing, English, technical writing, offered at my current college. I really wouldn't know what job you could get with any of those degrees. Anyone know? I almost have a degree in sociology but again, don't know if that'd be good for anything either. I enjoy working with kids and considered elementary education but I just think that would be too difficult with having young kids myself. I don't want to be away from home that much to go to school FT. I'd like to get something that's going to be useful but not be super difficult. I don't know if I could handle the stress of something incredibly difficult. In a perfect world, I would SO like to work in forensics of some type or investigation. Not a cop but like a P.I. Again, no clue how to get into that either. It seems a CJ degree prepares you to be a cop or is a pre-req basically for law. Any other thoughts are appreciated. I've enjoyed reading them all! Being an MT is not paying my bills. I am thinking about going back to school, but I am 40 and it has been so long since I was in high school. I have to google to help my son with his 4th grade homework let alone do college math. AND it will be 2 to 4 years before I will get a good job. Like so many others at MQ and everywhere, I went back to school, spent 4 1/2 years and $40 K+. That was 1 1/2 years ago. I cannot get a job teaching nor subbing, not even in a clerical capacity. Student loan has come due and I'm back to struggling here at Q, making hardly enough to pay bills, much less take on the $350 a month student loan payment.
