Additional study aids while going through school... - Curious

Posted: Apr 14, 2012

Im looking for additional ways to study for my classes while Im going through the coding course. Im interested in knowing what any of you have used in addition to what the school gives for study aids to help you obtain and keep the knowledge learned. I havent been to school in quite a while and I havent had to retain so much new information or take a test in all that time!!!! Ive heard and read comments about coloring books, laminated guides, crosswords etc. So what did you use and where can I get these items??? Thank you

The reality of studying is that you have to do the work of learning yourself. No study aid, laminated guide, or puzzle can do it for you. Those things are a big industry, providing lots of money for people who dream them up, but little in the way of results for students.

If you are having difficulty learning the information and getting it to stick, that is an indication that your study technique is inadequate. When you improve that, you will find that you will retain the material.

Students have different learning style. You have to meet the needs of your style. Can you google that and find out what the styles are? That will help you understand how to study.

An important part of learning involves working with the information to make it yours. Note-taking is an important part of that. Look up Cornell notes and how to take notes for suggestions. A technique called mind-mapping might appeal to you, so look that up. There are articles on Wikipedia.

You did not tell us what subjects were the most problem. A&P requires memorization. Coding itself requires developing the ability to USE the code set and to solve problems using information, along with remembering some rules.

Study aids can seem very helpful, but they are not. Creating flashcards or laminated aids YOURSELF, however, IS helpful. Taking notes and streamlining them over and over IS helpful. Taking a chapter of material and organizing it to teach to someone else IS incredibly effective. Creating crossword puzzles IS useful, so download free software and create some yourself.

In high school and some early college courses, teachers do a lot of the work for you. They repeat and repeat, read it to you, hand out work sheets, and so forth. That only works when there is little to learn. It will not work now.

Just reading the material over and over will not help now. More active involvement is necessary. The involvement needs to be true study, though, rather than messing around with study-like time-wasters. Effective study takes a lot less time.

I know what you mean. It̢۪s hard to find your personal way of getting it to stick. I found I didn̢۪t have time to even go looking for other materials. Everyone learns in a different way. What the heck is mine? I did check out other books when I had time to see if they would hit my spot. I think you just have to try different methods and see what feels the best. Not much help I̢۪m afraid, but I can relate to what you are going through.

First, thank you for an excellent post instructor!

My primary learning style is visual. If there is more difficult or hard-to-understand material, I take notes making the chapter an outline. I try to understand each sentence, and re-read prior sections and emphasize/underline parts in my notes. Then I will check the chapter objectives to ensure I have mastered those. Finally, I go through the chapter review questions. If there is something I did not recall in those questions, I reread that section and possibly add/edit my notes.

I have used this method since high school and I usually get A's. Again, I am primarily a visual learner. Writing it down while reading it helps me retain the information, and writing it also helps those who are kinesthetic learners. If there is something confusing to me, I will do more research in that specific area until I do understand the concept.

Best of luck to you in finding what will work for your learning style!

MT Going Back To School. What Field Of Study Would You Pursue M
Feb 22, 2010

in this day and age?  Because of a chronic illness, being a WAHM MT is perfect for me.  Given the current state of things, I feel I may need to return to school and have a backup plan.  Looking for suggestions, insight, thoughts on what you think might be a good avenue to pursue if you had to choose something that isn't physical (like no nursing) but something our MT background might help with.   Hope this is the right place to ask this! ...

Scribing With Some Additional Training Of Course
May 03, 2011

I am feeling very insecure these days, and since I am not old enough to retire (although I feel old enough) I am reading the handwriting on the wall and considering a career change.  Things are not good for us, and I don't think they are going to get any better.  The electronic immigrant isn't going away. I think my (our) skill-sets would lend themselves well to scribing -- with some additional training of course.  Has any one made the change, or seriously looked into it?  ...

Additional Info On Emails I Sent

Here is some of the "corporate talk" I got in response to some of my questions - you can all decide how honest it is!  (She said with a smirk!)  I notice I am still without work as are many others!  Oh well, I might end up getting the axe in the near future - but I voiced my concerns and, yes, this person looked up my anniversary date and said "congragulations for all your years of service and thank you on behalf of the company"! Not putting my entire email in here or all the answ ...

Hearing Aids And Earphones

I will be purchasing hearing aids soon and have two related questions. What type of headphones can I use, if at all, with: In-ear hearing aids, Behind-the-ear hearing aids. Thanks, all, and keep that volume turned down (no my hearing didn't go that way;  I am just getting older). ...

Recommendations For Transcriptionists Who Are Getting Hearing Aids
Apr 24, 2015

Dear Friends: I went to my ENT on Monday and they did a hearing test and found that I have significant hearing loss in my left ear and to make it compatible with my right ear, which has much less hearing loss, they recommended that I get hearing aids.  My question to you is what recommendations do you have for headphones for over the ears, not in the ear, for people who wear hearing aids.  Thanks so much. Sincerely,  Suzie ...

Has Anyone Ever Gone Through Allied School For Coding? Other School Recommendations?
Jun 24, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding.  If so, how was your experience?  Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification?  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding.  My best friend and I are going to take a course together.   If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...

Study Should Be Done
Jan 27, 2012

I think if a study were done, findings would show that the tediousness and repetitiveness and intricacy of the editing required for this particular ASR will slowly but surely drive you insane.  I am so nervous, I chew gum like a wild woman (and now need my second crown which I cannot afford), have developed tics and skin picking, and eat voraciously --- due to editing.  Flame away, but I have typed for 25+ years and never had a problem (actually enjoyed my job); however, after 5 or so ...

Coding Study On One's Own
Apr 25, 2010

I'd like to begin studying medical coding on my own to see if it it's a match iin terms of learning and liking the field. I have 30+ years of transcription experience and usually learn fairly quickly. What books/workbooks do you suggest as a start to see if this feels like it will work for me? And for people who have done this on your own, what did you include in a program of study for yourself? Are there some areas that you feel an in-house course is needed?  Replies greatly app ...

Opinions On Course Of Study And Job Outlook?
Mar 31, 2013

Usual story -- I loved MT, but I'm about to be laid off and know another MT job would probably pay minimum wage (if that!).  I'm lucky, in that I'll get enough unemployment to live on and will probably still have enough savings to pay tuition.  However, I have no preexisting college degree, and both unemployment and tuition money will only stretch to about 5 quarters. RMT Study Guide - Mistakes In Answer Key
Jan 26, 2013

Hello, I am a fresh graduate from MTEC . I am currently preparing for AHDI's RMT exam. I bought the study bundle which consists of the RMT exam guide and an audio CD. Al in all, I have learned a great deal from the study guide... but... yes, there's always a BUT... While reviewing the entire RMT exam guide, I noticed some blatant mistakes as well as unclear questions. One example is a mixup between "affect" vs. "effect". The RMT study guide's answer key states that "effect" is a ...
