According to what I just read - coding student

[ In Reply To ..]
The bill was reintroduced and the house voted to delay ICD-10 until October 2015. This is so upsetting. :(

Any politicos out there? What are the chances Senate will ditto? - -another coding student

[ In Reply To ..]
Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Fairly certain they will - It is anticipated to pass

[ In Reply To ..]
Then what? All of this hard work down the toilet?
But haven't facilities started using ICD-10 anyways? - another coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
I know not. (I am early in my studies, still studying other introductory topics, so forgive my ignorance!)
Some are double coding for practice - coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
But in the US, we are still using ICD-9 to code.

If this passes, then what happens to MM coder trainees? - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Aren't they all being trained for ICD-10 and not on ICD-9?

ICD-10 is used in all other countries besides the US - coding student

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

What does that have to do with anything re other countries? - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
?

Not exactly - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Other countries use ICD-10, but not ICD-10CM/PCS. The CM is modified for use in the US. The PCS was developed for us and will be used by us.

MModal offshores - Who says they have to code
[ In Reply To ..]
for hospitals in the US? In which case they don't need PCS.
Great idea, except for ... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
...the fact that you missed where she said that ICD-10-CM was MODIFIED FOR THE US.

Other countries don't use the same code set. They don't follow the same rules. In addition, they do not code for the same reasons. Our revenue system is driven by codes, DRGs, APCs, etc. Theirs is not.

They don't need us. We would not know what to do.

And I admitted my mistake - TWO HOURS before you posted
[ In Reply To ..]
Scroll down. At any rate, this is all up to MModal.
Didnt realize that. Why not just edit - your post?
[ In Reply To ..]
NM
At the time I was on my phone - And could not
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not editing it NOW because your answer has useful information in it. I was told by my teacher that the PCS was just used in the US; she did not say that the CMS was too. I bet there are other people who were not aware.
ICD-10 is used in other countries. - ICD-10-CM is ours
[ In Reply To ..]
We modified it. That is what CM means ... clinical modification. Same as the CM in ICD-9.
I did not realize the CM was just for the US too - I have no idea what this means
[ In Reply To ..]
for the MModal employees.

I worry about this too now. Will MM postpone our - training? Hope not.

[ In Reply To ..]

probably not because some of the clients are already using ICD10 - n/m

Read above as to why that will not work - coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
That is what I thought too but one of the more senior coders explains above why that will not be possible.
Im confused on who is replying to who. - when you say read above
[ In Reply To ..]
that's annoying too, to be frank. I have no clue what you are talking about.

I guess only time will tell.
Read "Great idea except for" - coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
Someone trying to help you is annoying? If you read the whole thread, you WILL have a clue as to what I am talking about. Or you could ask your boss, who is really the only one who can answer these types of questions for you.
talking about other countries not the US - we were told there are already
[ In Reply To ..]
clients that use ICD-10
There are - read whole thread
[ In Reply To ..]
According to the coder up above, the international version of ICD-10 is not the same as the clinical modification for the US, ICD-10-CM. Also, PCS is strictly for use in the US. Again, probably a question for your employer as to what you will be learning.

Don't think so. Early CAP graduates will have been - starting prior to Oct 1.

[ In Reply To ..]
If they would have us start prior to the go-live date for icd-10, they must have stuff for us to do, no? :)
But if it's October 2015, that is a full year off. What - will we do for that year ?

No delay in HDS2Coder - CT

[ In Reply To ..]
Had an interesting phone call this morning with a suit. There will be no delay in the current program offering. Focus will continue to be on expanding MM coding.
Thanks for the info. I hope they take on more MTs - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
for coding soon.
July/Aug - CT
[ In Reply To ..]
The next HDS2Coder program is tentatively set for late summer, barring any unforeseen calamities with this one.
Will everyone have to test again, I wonder? - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
x
To my undesrtanding, yes. - CT
[ In Reply To ..]
For those of you who applied and tested the last time, you will have to repeat the process each time you look to join the program.
CT, are you in the program? Hope you got it. - I am intrigued...
[ In Reply To ..]
...how did you get to be able to talk to a "suit"! Ha, ha. I am sure you wouldn't like to say, but nonetheless! :)
I'm not in. I'm resourceful and obnoxious though. - CT
[ In Reply To ..]
I ask a lot of questions and get a lot of "I don't know." So, as any overly pushy person can tell you, I'll find my own answers!

FYI - Word from the suit, MM prefers AHIMA coding credentials, for anyone who was wondering or cares.
yep we got a welcome to the program/registration email today - East MT
[ In Reply To ..]
No delays.
That is because... - their clients require that.
[ In Reply To ..]
Their clients will be hospitals, medical centers, etc., who do hospital-related coding. That group is dominated by AHIMA-credentialed health information management professionals who tend to prefer hospital-focused credentials like AHIMA's for several reasons.

They want credentials that focus on the kind of work they do (inpatient, hospital-based) They want credentials that can only be achieved by completion of a known body of information. They want credentials that demonstrate a minimum knowledge level in that area. They want credentials that show the holder has similar understandings of ethics, healthcare privacy & security, law, and customer service.

They also want to support their professional organization, to give jobs to people who went through the same training programs and who are just like them.

Whether they hire you directly or through a contractor, they look for AHIMA credentials. Due to the restrictions, high standards, and difficulties involved in getting and keeping those credentials (high cost, long time, few programs, high failure rates, etc.), there are limited numbers of credentialed individuals available to work. That is how they keep incomes high and opportunities available.

Just skip 10 all together... - CT

[ In Reply To ..]
Good grief. With all the delay, delay, delay, let's just skip 10 and go straight to 11. It's beginning to be a lot like sort of like Windows Vista...

Still struggling with ICD-10? ICD-11 gets a new release date

New codes will be revealed in 2017

8:38 AM - February 12, 2014

The World Health Organization (WHO) last week released a fact sheet noting that the final version of ICD-11 will be released in 2017, two years later than scheduled.

Doctors, hospitals continue to work on transition to ICD-10

U.S. health care organizations are working to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets to accommodate codes for new diseases and procedures. The switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets means that health care providers and insurers will have to change out about 14,000 codes for about 69,000 codes.

In August 2012, HHS released a final rule that officially delayed the ICD-10 compliance date from Oct. 1, 2013, to Oct. 1, 2014, partially to look at the incremental changes needed in reforming health care.

Last week: Fewer than 10% of practices are ready for ICD-10

WHO signals later release date for new ICD-11 codes

Development of ICD-11 began in April 2007 and originally was scheduled to be implemented by 2012. The rollout then was delayed until 2015.

The agency had been considering for several months delaying ICD-11 implementation.

Although no official announcement has been made, the WHO fact sheet states that "the 11th revision process is underway and the final ICD-11 will be released in 2017." Meanwhile, a notice posted on WHO's classifications page also notes that ICD's 11th stage is due by 2017.

According to Clinical Innovation & Technology, delaying the IDC-11 rollout "seems appropriate," as several surveys and reports have found that health care providers are lagging behind in their preparations for the transition to ICD-10 codes (Gregg, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/5; Walsh, Clinical Innovation & Technology, 2/4; Bowman, FierceHealthIT, 2/4).

In-house Job
Oct 14, 2010

I applied for an in-house transcription job in August back at my old pre-MQ hospital.  They decided the work load was too light (they had lost Radiology) and we not going to fill it at that time.  Another position has been vacated and I got a call from a friend that they are definitely filling it this time.  There were only 2 qualified applicants in August.  I am hoping the other person found something great already.  I have my fingers crossed, am nervous, and need ...

Does VR Get Better If Kept In-house?
May 16, 2012

Have any of your hospitals purchased a Nuance VR product that they've used for their in-house transcriptionists?  If so, does the VR quality get better and better since you have a limited number of MTs doing the editing?   It's not my hospital but one I know of that's starting with this new product, so I'm not sure of the exact product name.  I've worked for a huge MTSO where the VR never, ever improved in the 9 months I used it; but with soooo many MTs m ...

My job could be in jeopardy because we might be merging with another clinic, and there are no other local in-house MT openings. I've been working in a specialty clinic (in-house) the past 5-1/2 years. Even though I have 5 years of acute care/radiology experience and 1 year of multi-specialty clinic, and even though I took the M-TEC course and graduated with 98% about 3 years ago, it doesn't matter because I don't have recent acute care experience. Okay, I can unders ...

In-house Job Prospect, What To Expect?

I just set up an interview for an in-house job.  Problem is, I've only worked from home, so I'm really not sure what to expect.  It is for a rural hospital district.  My experience is with medium to large multispecialty clinic accounts.  The HM manager said it was transcription, including radiology, as well as acting as assistant to her, which makes me think it might be more clerk work than transcription.
