Clinic going VR with EHR - mari

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed over and over - I'm just starting to research it a bit. (I haven't completely been under a rock but I have been in my own happy little world with my job ... until now).

I'm an IC transcriptionist (working from home) for a local clinic of 15 MDs/PAs. Three of them are using Dragon Speak VR with EHR. A fourth one just started. What I want to know is if there is a place for me when more go to VR.

After a bit of research, if I understand correctly, either doctors dictate and edit directly into the EHR and that's all that is needed, OR a doctor dictates directly without editing, saves his voice file, and then someone else comes along and listens and edits. I can see that I would fit into the second option and I could see that this would possibly be a better option for a fast-paced clinic. I'm assuming this could also be done remotely, editing VR, as I see larger companies offering this service.

Here's my question: Does any one do this as an independent contractor? I don't know where to even start to find the information about this? Does any one have any information for me on this? Anything?

help provide them the information they need. Chances are very good all their information comes from other clinicians and the Dragon and EHR salespeople, none of whom are going to be explaining how maximum benefit and time savings can be achieved with an efficient combination of resources that includes you. What are those using Dragon now saying? Good luck.

I too was an IC and two doctors told me on a Friday they were going to use Dragon Speak and wouldn't be needing me any longer. (Real sweathearts) I would talk to the one who signs your checks and see what they say. I'm afraid saving $$$ is the bottom line today and unfortunately that is usually at our expense.

I checked out various organizations for HIM and MTs, plus government web sites about EHR and health information technology.

From what I saw, you may have to learn about the EHR software they use. Also, it would be useful to familiarize yourself with what the term "meaningful use" means to the EHR, how data is supposed to be structured so it can be easily accessed later, etc.

From what I read, if you can position yourself as a knowledgeable consultant, they may find you more valuable as both an MT and an EHR "expert."

Yup. An IC who can also advise on changes is - very valuable to everyone, including self. NM

I just found out today when I had no work with my smaller company that Nuance took over all the work starting today. I found out they knew about it 2 months ago and didn't tell us. I am waiting on the contact information from the original clinic manager at the doctor's office so hopefully we can go with our work. No idea who that ad on the Job Seekers board is from (Tracy in Lousiana, but no company name). with 1 other girl, and then the QA girl types on this clinic also. I still have not figured this out. We keep the work caught up and this QA girl gets on there and types with us when there is nothing to type. I mean there can be 10 jobs there and she will get on to help us type 10 jobs. Has anyone started to get more work in the last year (in a clinic setting)? It was steady for me a few years ago, and now I am overwhelmed with the amount of dictation I have!! Each of the doctors I work for are seeing wayyy too many patients in one day, thus more dictating, etc. Im putting in like 10-12 hour days now, whereas I used to only work 5 or 6. Do I understand correctly that we are basically "punished" for working on the Emdat platform via the "platform factor" of all lines x 0.95? Does anyone know what the latest status of the Mayo Clinic is, with regards to medical transcriptionists? I remember they laid off something like 118 MT's last summer, and I believe someone here said they outsourced their work to Amphion. So today I happened to look on the Mayo Clinic homepage under Jobs, and according to that, it says they're hiring "telecommute" MT's. I can't find any mention of an MTSO... it appears to be a Mayo Clinic ad, not an MTSO ad ...
