Any clinic MTs try for an acute care job... - weary

Posted: Jun 04, 2010

And get hired? Opportunites are limited with clinic work, which is all I have experience with, but nobody will give me a chance. Should I apply for acute care positions anyway? Anyone MTs who only did clinic work have any stories about breaking into it?

I think you should definitely try to get into acute care even though you only have clinic experience. Why wouldn't you try? You're just limiting yourself if you don't try. When I first started out years ago, I had only a temporary MT job in a cardiology clinic. I then got a job through an MTSO and I was put on a hospital account for maybe a couple years. Did a lot of clinic work then, through the same MTSO, and then got on another hospital account plus clinic work. For me the hardest part was the operative reports. Good luck and definitely go for it.

I did a few years ago. I dont see why the MTSOs - think theres any mystery to acute care -(sm)

for the most part it's pretty much the same stuff, but you go into more detail, like with ops and such. I find that if you can sound it out, you can usually find new terms within seconds on Google.

Whether you're doing clinic work, acute care, or whatever, whenever you change to a different facility to transcribe for, there is a period of learning. No matter how new to MT or how experienced you are, this is true. Even though most medical jargon is the same or similar, I've found that each intstitution has its own culture, and sometimes all the doctors from one hospital will dictate about a knee replacement operation one way, and the exact same operation done at a different hospital will sound completely different until you get used to it. For the more detailed types of dictation, or the mumblers or ESL dictators, samples are key. The more samples you can get your hands on, the easier the transition is.

I don't really understand why an employer wouldn't hire a good clinic MT for acute care. Grante, they're only in it for the money, and time is money. Still, even the most experienced acute care MT is going to have a learning curve before they're up to speed. A good MT is a good MT, and the same characteristics that make one good at clinic work, or pathology, or veterinary work, is going to make them good at acute care, too.

If you're a good clinic MT, and they turn you down because you have no recent acute care experience, then I think it's their loss.

I disagree. - mt2

Clinic MT and acute care MT is not the same, not even close. If you are a good acute care MT, you can do anything at any time. Not so, if you are clinic. Acute care is way more complicated that you make it sound. MTSO do not want to take the time to train clinic MTs to do acute care, that's why they advertise the way they do.

I learned on the job. The only difference was I had - to spend a little more time researching -sm

than I did with clinic work. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't any different than taking on a new specialty, or one that I'm rusty at. Just because one didn't learn acute care in school, from a book, doesn't mean thay can't pick it up quickly as they go. All they have to be is a good MT to begin with.
That's true. You just be a little slow to start, but if you have - good skills, you learn it! nm

But they would prefer experience if given a choice - LK

There's actually quite a bit to learn in acute care, as it not only involves procedure and equipment knowledge, but also covers all body systems. Of course it can be learned, like anything else, but why in the world would an MTSO want to hire someone with no acute care experience for an acute care account when they can hire someone with the experience and knowledge to hit the ground running? Employers only train when they have to, that's just common sense.

People who pay 4-6 cpl shouldnt be so choosy. nm - Rocky R.

As some of you know, I had 36 years of clinical experience when my old boss closed his office practice, and I had to go job hunting. It was quite an education, because it seemed like I couldn't even get arrested. Half the places wouldn't even let me test, and the other half, the ones where you could go straight to the test without sending in your resume first (and I am QUITE sure I did perfectly well on those tests, thankyouverymuch), as soon as they saw my resume, they would say they weren't hiring for clinical right then, go away, don't call us and we won't call you.

Transcend wouldn't even let me test, because if you come in "over the transom" and not via a merger, they require 5 years of recent acute care experience.

I finally ran across TRS, who not only hired me, they up-trained me into acute care. And now, of course, I work for Transcend, despite being supposedly not qualified to do so (since I still have just a little under 2 years of acute care experience). I find that rather deliciously ironic....

I even went so far as to call one of the top schools and ask if they had a crash course in acute care for somebody like me. They said no we don't, would you like to sign up for our full course. I said no, thanks. What I did not say was that I could probably TEACH at least half of their course, blindfolded.......

So... it IS doable, if you get lucky enough that your test (which you WILL, of course, do VERY WELL on) happens to cross the desk of a recruiter who sees your potential and wants to give you a chance.... Just keep trying, and the very best of luck to you!

well...MQ and TL own most everyone you all have named...If you see familiar software like docuscribe, chartscript, etc., then they own them...and as well as ADHI...so...if you are not getting a response...that is probably why...just google familiar names within any jobs you apply first for...Also, if you take a ADMINTTEST and it looks lie this similar website page it is all the same...it is because it is MQ/TL owned by India...LOL...GL..Google CEO's of every company...and see the similarities...

Acute Care?
Sep 23, 2014

As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"? I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? And it's basically about more minor medical problems albeit could be chronic rather than "acute." ...
