Been doing clinic my whole MT career... - clinictoacute

Posted: Jul 05, 2013

I've been doing clinic my whole six-year MT career. Now since there are not that many clinic transcription jobs anymore, I'd like to learn acute. But of course, all the acute ads say they want experience. I'm confident that I can pass some of the acute care job tests. Are some employers open to giving you an acute care job if you do well on the test, having no actual job experience in it? I went to a good school and am confident in my abilities. What has been your experience in this?

From clinic to acute care - sm

I had no problem with the transition to acute care from clinical work. I reviewed intently the book of style and used samples and reviewed my labs and I was fine. Good luck.

I have never thought there was much of a difference. If you know basic medical terminology, know the basics of Anatomy and Physiology, and you are a good researcher, you'll have no trouble. Because you will be researching more, you will be slower, so expect your production to dip a little bit. In about six months, you won't even notice the difference. I do both, usually on a single day. I don't even think of the distinction much anymore.

My Thoughts - see msg

I guess it depends on what type of clinnic. If you've been doing just Family Practice, then I'd say you're in for a tough, tough ride. If you've done several clinic specialties, it will be a little easier.

You'll also want to consider the ESL factor. There is a lot more ESL in acute care than you'll ever see in clinic.

Labs, meds, etc., in a hospital are waaaay different from clinic.

Not sure where you went to school, but I went to one of the best, and I did clinic for one year (one speciality only), and then transitioned to acute care. It was tough, but I did it. I was reasonably freshly out of school, though, which had extensive acute care.

I say test, heck--it can't hurt. Fasten your seat belt! I do think the test will be much easier than actual on-the-job, but it will give you an idea, anyway.

All that being said, if your new job is going to require operations and procedures, that is a special training and in my opinion, you can't just fall into it. I would be brutally honest with them that you've never done those.

Thanks. sm - clinictoacute

I'd tell them I've never done acute. I'd just let me testing (if I pass it) get my foot in the door.

I made the transition - and it was pretty tough

About 5 years ago my long-time local doc boss closed his practice and I started job-hunting. What an eye-opener. Even with 36 years of clinical experience in multiple specialties, some companies wouldn't even allow me to take their test. Then I found a little outfit called TRS whose recruiter liked my resume well enough that they hired me with the offer to up-train me into acute care. It was a steep learning curve, but about 7 months later I took and passed the CMT, and then we were bought out by Transcend. I found this supremely ironic because during my job hunt, Transcend was one of the companies that wouldn't even let me take their test. Fast-forward a few years and Transcend was bought out by Nuance. I lasted less than 3 months there. I've heard that they might hire less-experienced people--but if you value your sanity, don't go there. Just a word to the wise. Best of luck to you.

Thanks! - clinictoacute

I'll avoid Nuance. :)

wow, and that was with 36 years clinic experience. NM - anonimal

to answer your one question, no most MTSOs will not hire someone - without experience sm

[ In Reply To ..]
there are a scant few who will hire newbies on schooling alone (and they will check you on that, too). You really should be asking those on the NEW MT BOARD about these companies. Keep in mind - these companies pay very very low in exchange for taking you to gain experience. Best bet is find a local hospital who will take on an intern - they'll play teacher while you work and you will get your experience started.

Also - like Radiology - check the internet for samples of acute care reports, especially operative reports, to see what you are getting into.

not a newbie sm - clinictoacute

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not a newbie to medical transcription. I'd just be a newbie to acute care. Not sure if I was clear or not.

by newbie I meant not to MT but to any work type never done. - zero experience in any work type is newbie to them

[ In Reply To ..]
MTSOs do not want to teach the work. Some are even asking that you have worked their platform before so they don't have to train at all period. Here's your IDs - a few notes on report formatting, fussy doctor requests, and QA (account specifics) - have at it.

Good luck, tho.

Clinic vs acute care - Tough Climb

[ In Reply To ..]
That is going to be rough. The person who said it wasn't too hard, not sure where that is coming from. Maybe she had easy, easy doctors in the hospital, maybe just did mostly physical exams or ER reports.

Acute care is extremely difficult. Be mindful of what you are getting into if you are allowed to test, and keep in mind, most tests are not near as hard as the real McCoy.

Going from clinic (I don't care if it's 20 years clinic) to acute care is a huge jump, even for the sharpest of people.

Best of luck. I'm not clear as to why you want to put yourself through this these days, but...you didn't ask for my advice on that.

ask yourself this-are you an 'if I can hear it, I can type it' type mt? - NM

LOL I've said that for years - If I can hear it nm

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed over and over - I'm just starting to research it a bit.  (I haven't completely been under a rock but I have been in my own happy little world with my job ... until now).  I'm an IC transcriptionist (working from home) for a local clinic of 15 MDs/PAs.   Three of them are using Dragon Speak  VR  with EHR.  A fourth one just started.  What I want to know is if there is a place for me when m ...

Nov 13, 2010

My company just lost a huge account.  Since then I have not made much money at all.  I am scraping to get by.  After 10 years in the medical transcription field I am fed up.  I have always worked on such great accounts for good money.  Now, I cannot find something that is even average pay.  I am going to be taking a medical coding course; however, I still need to provide for my three kids.  I want to go out and solicit doctors and try to secure my own account, ...

In-house Clinic Pay
Nov 16, 2010

I have an interview with a local eye clinic (there are six surgeons).  Just wondering what kind of salary to expect to be offered or ask for (!), having been paid as a remote MT/VR Editor by production for many years and haven't a clue about salaries in clinics any more.  It is not as an IC but as member of their staff, permanent, full-time, 40 hours a week. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.   ...

Nuance Took Over My Clinic
Dec 10, 2012

I just found out today when I had no work with my smaller company that Nuance took over all the work starting today.  I found out they knew about it 2 months ago and didn't tell us.  I am waiting on the contact information from the original clinic manager at the doctor's office so hopefully we can go with our work.  Has anyone else had this happen and if so how good are the chances of just going with Nuance.  At this point I just need the work.    Thank ...

No idea who that ad on the Job Seekers board is from (Tracy in Lousiana, but no company name). Am I the only one who wondered if the "overflow" 1 to 2 days a week is some atrocious dictator that the person running the ad doesn't want to have to endure? Clinic Notes = No Money?
Apr 16, 2010

I lost my primary accounts recently and was switched to an account where most of the jobs are really short clinic-type notes (less than a minute).  This pay period, my paycheck will be over $200 less than it was when I had my primary accounts, and I'm barely making my minimum line counts.  I've been doing this job for a long time and have always had really good line counts before.  I've been feely really down in the dumps like maybe I've just kind of lost ...

Confusion About The Mayo Clinic

Does anyone know what the latest status of the Mayo Clinic is, with regards to medical transcriptionists?  I remember they laid off something like 118 MT's last summer, and I believe someone here said they outsourced their work to Amphion.  So today I happened to look on the Mayo Clinic homepage under Jobs, and according to that, it says they're hiring "telecommute" MT's.  I can't find any mention of an MTSO... it appears to be a Mayo Clinic ad, not an MTSO ad ...
